Spam for survival food ?

It will keep well in a ziploc baggie for a couple of days (especially in cold weather), minus the can.
I like it fried, in chunks mixed in with some Kraft cheese-n-shells (really good).

It also comes in smaller serving foil packs, just like tuna does now. Something to consider if you have canaphobia. :)

Oh and if your kids will not eat their spam? (How can you have pudding if you don't eat your meat?)....

Its gotten pretty expensive here over the last few years, $2.50/can.
I think the increase may be related to the "prepper movement".
I can almost buy a package of precooked bacon for that.

I like Spam enough myself that I would not worry about the weight, It would be worth it IMHO.

Lol that looks like one of my favorite things to eat for breakfast. I usually fry up rice with tons of garlic and salt. Then add scrambled eggs and spam.

Btw I LOVE spam. I also really pork roll and scrapple.

i just converted 3 of my friends to spam with that breakfast during that camp out :D

Spam is OK .. I dont mind it mixed very liberally with something to kill the flavor and soak up some fat .
Id not be stocking it up in bulk for in case of a survival situation tho .. Id be more inclined to eat something I could face day after day.
I dont like carrying cans so for me itb be kept as a back up of last resort after we run out of cats dogs pigeons and bugs in the neighbourhood
but yeah , its food , and when your options are eat , or die , its something to eat so I guess it works

cats & dogs...when pets become the menu now we're talking real survival! it always cracks me up when i see people who build debris shelters, friction fires, etc. but then when the topic of spam comes up they all get riled up against it as if you just insulted their grandma :D

I don't see any animal shapes or stars, moons or clovers. Maybe you need a better Spamcraft knife?

All this talk of Spam and all this cold weather (1 degree last night) stoked my spam hunger and I pulled the D-ring on a can for lunch. Spam and tomato sandwich for the win! Oh, hickory smoke flavor since you are wondering.

Funny. I also fried up some spam just because of this thread. It is not something I do often, but I still do it. My wife doesn't care for it. I think she associates it with surplus food from the 50's and 60's that the government gave to "needy" people. I can tell you that the dogs ate those dried eggs and loved it!

I grew up with spam . Spam goes well with mmm everything . As a kid living in Puerto Rico it was Spam and that can corn beef what ever that is . My wife still buys Spam and my kids like it . Thin sliced fry it with rice and beans . Even for breakfast scramble eggs with spam . I can't eat it out of the can . What's that jellow at the bottom of the can ?

I tried grilling it once and it turn out like a jerky . Stiff and dry yuck :barf:

For children of World War 2 era people Spam had bad connotations, my dad couldn't serve so I didn't have that influence on me. I like it no matter how it's served. I have prepared it with pineapple chunks, barbequed, and straight out of the can among many other ways .

The jelly in the can is just that, natural geleitin from the cooked meat. It helps prevent it from drying out. Same as jello but without the flavoring.

I find this amusing if I grew up in pr i would be banging down lechon and mofongo all day long not spam...lol.

These darn threads I'm going to make it a mission. To fry up some tasty spam this weekend and use it to sop up some runny fried eggs and habichuelas stewed I'm sofrito.

Spam has all the leftover from el lechon . The feet , ears , tail , . Spam goes well with fried plantains . :)

It does contain a lot of sodium. Not as much as the venison jerky I make every fall and winter. Not as much as many salty foods including some bacon and ham and other lunchmeats. Just keep that in mind and don't eat Spam and nothing else unless it is a matter of survival. Just about any long term storage canned meat is high in sodium. And our bodies need salt. You can actually buy pure salt in a store! Some people even put shakers of the stuff on their table!

I like spam I don't eat it as much anymore . Maybe twice a year now . Last time we went to my brother in law my wife took a can just because my kinds are picky with food . When I saw the can I told her to put it away . She ask why . I said we don't need a lecture on what's in that can . He is a vegan .

This thread just reminded me to have a tin of kippers for a snack :) I keep a few of those in the cupboard and in my backpack at all times. 3.25oz has 190 cal, 13g fat, only 2g saturated fat, 19g protein. Roughly 20% cholesterol and sodium, though.

If you like SPAM, go for it. To me there a lot better alternatives out there... tuna, salmon, chicken (all available in lightweight foil pouches), peanut butter... I too was surprised by SPAM's calorie count, so that is a big point in its favor.

Unless Hormel is successfully tricking everybody, Spam contains what it contained from the start. Pork shoulder and pork ham.

No tail, no ears, no snout, no trotters, no chitins, no squeal. :p

Limit your amount of canned fish, seriously --- heavy metals you body never gets rid of.

I have it about once, maybe twice a month. I'm more worried about the crap I breathe and eat every day than I am about that.
