Spam for survival food ?

With the correct choices, you can limit your exposure to mercury in canned fish. Albacore tuna has more than chunk light. Herring has a good amount less than tuna. Sardines and salmon are even lower. I would not have a problem eating herring or sardines regularly, but albacore tuna should probably not be a daily event.

Unless Hormel is successfully tricking everybody, Spam contains what it contained from the start. Pork shoulder and pork ham.

No tail, no ears, no snout, no trotters, no chitins, no squeal. :p
My wife opened a can when we were first married over 30 years ago and it was looking back at her. An eyeball. Haven't touched it since.

Pickled herring is our family Superbowl tradition however! Great stuff on ritz crackers.

Mussels - we collected mussels ,fresh water types, but they are more bland than salt water types .Turns out that the mussels are the biggest biomass on the river .There are 5 or 6 types , one fairly rare .The racoons didn't care .You see piles of shells on the shore ,they had a feast !! You need to add some garlic etc to give them some pizazz.

I love Spam and my favorite is the turkey spam. I like it grilled and or smoked served on saltine crackers along with some beer.

Bought myself a cheap butane stove and a cheap 20cm frying pan , gonna try frying the spam on this when I go back to work . I think with some canola spray to oil the pan it should come out pretty good , but I suck at cooking , so this will be good practice for me image.jpg

Well I got breakfast recipe that was a big hit. Spam right out of the can cut into 10 slices, Turned over and cut into half an inch squeres. In a small wok I put some chicken fat and cooked on low heat till we had some melted fat. Into this I droped the spam. In a second pan I got water to boil added salt and corn meal. I timed it so both would be done about the same time. Spam was fried and crunchy, Corn meal was was done when it was nice and thick. Mixed the two togther and added some sour cream. The taste was really good and We spend the rest of the day hiking up some very steep trails. It keeps you going all day with hard work as long as you got plenty of water to drink.
It really is not my recipe all I did was replace bacon with spam.
you can add fried herring. Feta cheese and it goes well with pickeled tomatoes. My mom said that many farm workers would eat that for breakfast so they have the energy to work all day.

That top can is mine though I'd like to try the peppered. Just haven't seen it in the stores here. And what is this pocky lips thing? Is it like a cold sore? I hate those.

Tried the turkey Spam for the first time...darn tasty, fried up, in an egg sandwich. Lots of Tabasco.

I may have to give the turkey spam a try if I can find it.

I think you could do a lot worse when you are surviving. A LOT WORSE. A fried egg would probably be heaven.

I'd like to try the bacon one , the garlic one and the hickory smoke . I doubt they're sold in aus though btw if I'd opened a can of spam and there was an eyeball in it I'd make a joke about keeping an eye on it and cook the spam.

They Turkey one is really good! We got snowed and iced in NJ today. So am working from home, but...had to practice the Spamcraft this morning. Just couldn't hold out anymore!

Spam works so well as a proxy for scrappy or Taylor Ham. Taylor Ham is a NJ/Pa thing though so not sure if folks ever had that. I had never heard of it until I moved here 5 years ago.
