Spanish blades, some info and loooots of pics :D

gregorio, that kukri looks so tempting...and even tho I'm not a big fan of daggers, that escudero looks really nice. Wish I had a gf to gift me such a nice bowie, lol. Mikael, I have no issue with a screw welded to a half tang to go all the way to the end, i.e. a rat tail, but the construction of that one ticked me off the wrong way; wish I had taken a shot before pouring the epoxy but I didn't. It is a half tang, and the pommel has a hollow bar that reaches to it and attaches with a rivet ... I have not broken a knife with such a tang setup, but it doesn't inspire confidence to me. I have seen photos of a broken muela scorpion and the tang was similar, although the hollow bar ran all the way up to the guard. Guy must have been beating the living crap out of that knife.

The kodiak performs as it looks - excellent slicer, with enough beef to handle mild abuse (done some 2" thick stick batonning with no problem, and I bet it can handle worse than that)

Dinges, that is awesome, never thought somebody would post a link to a spanish custom maker . Cudeman currently makes the Boina Verde from a Corts design, it's on my future buys list. Another place to look up great spanish customs is www.2gknives.com/index.php/en/ ...been tempted to drop them an email and ask about prices but I'm guessing these are in Busse-price league, not ready for that yet...

There is also a company called Yarara that makes/made the Boina Verde in 6150 steel. Here's a Dutch site that sells 'em, as well as some Corts Boina's:
http://www.want2have.nl/N_frame.html?http://www.want2have.nl/
The owner specializes in Spanish blades, as he is from Spain himself I believe.
But as you said, you're not ready for Busse prices yet, especially not when the prices are in euro's:D

I'll post some pictures of my Yarara Boina soon;)

Nice knives ! I have several Spanish knives and I like them ( especially Aitor blades :) )

I have tried to find Yararas but with not much success, and I find some of their designs a bit strange, but would love to see that Boina. Argentinean blades, right?

1.Sounds like You made the knife better!
I have used a mallet on the pommel of one of my Bowie's, with 60% tang and riveted screw + nut.
No damage what so ever and this has made me believe in the method.

2.It's a lot of Loveless in the Kodiak design.
What's not to like!

Regards
Mikael

As promised:

I had the scales customized by a local guy, I didn't like the look and feel of the original hard, green rubber grips.
I'm planning on different scales, just simple and smooth.

Very nice thread. I will need to post up a spanish folder thread.

Very well photographed.

If you have any facility with spanish you can check out http://armasblancas.mforos.com/

I also ship ítems for people from spain about every two weeks, my buddy in oregon Loves his leather products from here.

yeah, opgenorf, I visit the FAB on a regular basis, haven't joined yet due to the process being a bit complicated. Might take one of these days to figure it out :D

Dinges...that is pure bad-assery, sir. Like it even better than Cudeman's. Where can I find Yararas?

Mikael, you are absolutely right. Plenty Loveless in that design, and I don't have issues with welded screws rat tails.

I just broke my JK1 last weekend. Does anyone know what the warranty is like on these blades? I emailed the company but I haven't gotten a response yet. I'm wondering whether I got the correct contact information. I'm sorry to say that even if I got a new one I would not feel confident enough for it to be my main blade in the woods.

From what I understand, Aitors have lifetime warranties. Did you contact the seller? he should be able to contact Aitor on your behalf. I'm a bit surprised to hear this as the JK1 has a mythical standing amongst spanish blades, tho I have never been a fan of hollow handled knives. From comments on spanish forums it seems like the newer versions (the original Aitor factory closed around 2001, I believe, and it was boought and re-opened by the Pielcu group a couple of years ago, now the new knives are referred to as Aitor-Pielcu) are not up to the same quality standard as the ones made previous to the original factory shut-down.

My shipment has not arrived yet... I contacted Cuchilleria Albacete and we kept a close watch on the shipment but after a month it was cancelled and a new order was made, which is already in NY. Hopefully I will have them by the end of the week, will post shots then.

So, finally...the order arrived. Took almost 2 months due to a shipping error, first order got cancelled so I had to wait for a 2nd...but they look really good! I'm particularly fond of the CDS knives. The Muela Typhoon got a new kydex sheath already, didn't like the stock one but love the knife. Tomorrow I will take and post new photos. Besides the 6 knives coming from Spain, I also hauled in 4 more while waiting for them, they will be shot tomorrow too.

So... I will wait to take pictures tomorrow in broad daylight, night indoor shots with the cell don't come out too good. Meanwhile, I did some sheath work for the Oso Negro, El Montero and the Typhoon. Love the knives, hated the sheaths. First was El Montero:

I will do side shots later, but the front has a double welt. Those serrations (and on the oso negro) are really sharp

E8720BC6-orig_zps11ea9ffa.jpg

Then, the Typhoon arrived. The sheath is not so bad but the front velcro strap is annoying, IMO useless since the handle strap does the job; it's a bother when putting it back and fumbling to move it while it gets stuck to the velcro. I was gonna cut the velcro strap but decided to make a froggy kydex for the knife:

the frog could use some flair, so...

I gots dangler fever...

Next up I decided to make it special. Since the Oso Negro had been a grail for a long time, the sheath had to be special. I followed the same dangler pattern as the Montero sheath, also with double thickness welt in the front, but the tooling was different; the veg-tan Herman Oak leather was also dyed and then rubbed with antique black to make the pattern stand out:

A bit of info: before it was called "Oso Negro", the knife issued to some military groups in Spain was simply called "Cuchillo de Monte", which translated means "mountain knife", and it followed the pattern set by a knife called the Villegas, named after the guy who designed it. So, the tooling has a bear paw set in a mountain range with a river flowing from them

So that's it for now, if I wake up early tomorrow I will take shots of the rest of the new spanish steel arrivals. Hope u likey :D

I'm almost 100% satisfied with how the sheath for the Oso came out...one slight error with the strap made me cut it and make a new adaptation that will be finished tonight. But as it was, it deserved a better shot than the ones posted already that are too dark

Ok, so on with the new arrivals. What's in the green box?

well...a very nice old style reproduction by Muela. It's a "18th century" replica, very nicely executed. Idon't see myself using this one unless I'm assigned on a diplomatic mission

Next is what I'm sure will become one of my favorite knives. A CDS Celtibero with cocobolo scales shaped to look like bamboo:

Quite possibly the best quality factory-made leather sheath I have ever received

540B6CA0-orig_zps61d83961.jpg

It came with the ferro rod (I changed the stock cord for an elastic bungee) and a 2-sided Pedra Das Meigas stone

4.5 mm thick, 6" blade, full tang with a tall flat saber grind, wide jimping above the ricasso, killer sheath and very nice ergos. What's NOT to like? Really diggin' this one

58466115-orig_zps00a893da.jpg

This one is just for decoration. Cast eagle head handle, had some nasty grind marks that I had to fix. Seems like an owner tried to sharpen it, but I seriously doubt this was even heat treated, let alone sharpened (the edges are at least 2mm thick). Anyhoo, it looks good nailed to the wall. Toledo marks on the engraving.

Next is a M. Nieto Safari. 1/8" thick, 5.5" blade, stacked leather handle with black micarta spacers, brass guard and nickel silver pommel

When I first saw this lil fella it was love at first sight. Muela Bison with olive wood scales over a full tang, 1/8" thick, 3.5" blade, 7 1/8" overall. Killer throated leather sheath and scalpel-sharp. Jimping on spine over the ricasso, added a pull fob to add to the cuteness of it :D

Ah, another box...this one says "V Centenario Encuentro En La Historia" with the years 1492-1992 encasing the image of the 3 "carabelas" that brought the Old World to the New World. Aitor made these pocket lockbacks and also bolomachetes to commemorate the 500 years of the discovery back in 1992. I have fond memories of that year as I was a Senior in High School in Puerto Rico and a world-wide Regatta was done, PR being one of the stops and of course it was a big excuse to party :D

E371F2B1-orig_zps62220037.jpg

I have to say, Spaniards sure know how to work leather... this 21-years-old sheath is in perfect condition, the only evidence of its age a green oily "rust" around the snaps that was cleaned right away

2836712C-orig_zps54fcea99.jpg

The brass was not heavily tarnished but a bit cloudy. After 2 minutes with a rag and blue magic, it looked almost like fresh minted gold

Native themed engravings...these look mexican to me

Solid 1/8" thick, 4 1/8" long blade locks with authority. I might use this one on special occasions
