Spanto or Slicer, which do you prefer?

Happy to pick up my first Hinderer an XM-18 3.5" Spanto. Even without my first or third color choice of scale, the thing is a beauty. Its quality and detail rivals that of CRK in everyway. I am really looking to try out an XM-18 3" because the overall weight is a big attraction. Would love to hear the thoughts and comments from those of you who already have experience with the 3" model and in particular how it relates to Spanto vs. Slicer. Which style do you prefer on your EDC and why? The spanto just looks sweet but the slicer seems like it will hold its own as well. Thanks in advance.

"Its quality and detail rivals that of CRK in everyway". Really, most of us on the "Hinderer" sub forum think that Hinderers surpass CRK :). Congrats on your new purchase and you can't go wrong with either style.

I used to think the Slicer was the cooler of the 2 grinds, but I've owned both and now I am a Spanto fan. Just the character and complexity of the shape with the converging lines and the swedge is now more appealing to me than the slicer grind. I also never noticed a difference is cutting ability between the two grinds *but that's just me*. I also really appreciate how the Spanto grinds are not exactly the same on every knife. Some are more curved, some are more vertical, etc. These small differences give each knife it's own character.

For practical use either will do just fine. If you have large amount of cutting through thicker media (cardboard, rubber, etc.) then the slicer grind will be better because it provides less resistance while cutting.

Personally I like the slicer grind as it's already a helluva lot stronger than I've ever needed and it cuts better.

Can't go wrong with a Hinderer though.

Both CRK and RH make great knives, I have several of each. I think CRK does a nicer finish on the blade edge. In all other regards, I think RH is the better knife, design, usability, toughness and just overall fit. But no need to start that argument all over, I have a Sebenza 25 arriving tomorrow and just own two Hinderers. I plan to own more but they are harder to find and buy at semi reasonable prices.

Yep, please nobody open this rusty can...it's a topic for general area if anywhere and I don't participate no matter where its posted. I like what I like, you....you get the idea. To each his own.

As for Spanto vs. Slicer...I am fortunate enough to own both and each has seen pocket time / use. I don't have any reservation putting full faith in the robust build of the XM with any blade grind, but do find the trusty Spanto has yet to leave me wanting.

I have both, spanto in the 18 and slicer in the 24. Man, I just feel happy to have both! I would happily buy either again if given a chance. But if push came to shove, I would go for the spanto, it is just so cool looking. As one poster said, each is different but all are easy to sharpen.

I'd go with the slicer.

But, of course, I always carry a fixed blade for heavy use.

You definitely can't go wrong here - but IMHO if your going to own only one production XM, Spanto is the route to go hands down.

I feel like i totally agree w bwilson, i havnt had the pleasure of owning a slicer yet, time will tell, but honestly the spanto blade shape is what i like best about the xm, that and the attention to detail.

Spanto for a hard working knife, slicer for more delicate cutting chores. When in doubts get both :)

I love the spanto, but on the 3" I prefer the slicer, due to the blade thickness. Now, if there was such a thing as a fatty 3", I'd like it with a spanto.

Thanks for all the great insights and opinions guys (and possible gals too) :) I love the Spanto shape on the 3.5 as it is so robust, unique, and confidence inspiring. I would usually do more light to medium cutting tasks so maybe the slicer would be better on the 3" though. Either way, the grip is just perfect.

I like the slicer in 3 inch and 3.5. I think it is a lot more practical for a folder. The blade can handle anything the spanto can, but the spanto will only be better for prying. You should not pry with a folder in the first place so mine as well go the the better cutter, and splinter removal blade. I think the slicer looks better also.

I have a 3.5" Spanto and prefer that blade grind. I have a 3" Slicer on order and went with the different grind for varieties sake. Can't go wrong either way I suppose.

For me it goes like this...if you have one, you will want for and seek the other.

N2K...aint that the truth?? After 2 spantos im thinking of looking for a slicer next. The spanto is my all time favorite PRODUCTION blade shape...like EVER! ;) ...BUT...a slicer may serve my day to day tasks alittle better...most of my cutting is boxes, cardboard, tape, thin plastic pallet wrap, plastic pallet straps, poly tubing, plastic tubing, plants...things like that. But the day i need to stab clean thru a car or stop a speeding bullet...ill grab my spanto 24! ;)

Easy answer is to buy both right? I have a 3.5" w/ spanto and a 3" slicer and love them both. For my uses, the spanto on the bigger and the slicer on the 3" made sense. My next goal is to order a flipper since both of those are non-flippers... (hmmm, when's the next chance to get that order in...)
