Spark, I am afraid you miss the point.

America is known for getting the kind of actions from it's government that it deserves - as a way of punishment. If you don't like what's happening now, but won't do something about it, just wait. Something else even worse is bound to come along, and I'm sure you won't like that at all.

It's not hysteria to recognize that the wording of a binding regulation not passed by congress can and does eliminate possession and ownership of an object. Anybody with a iota of awareness on public matters understands that government can and does regulate - try driving your car without a license plate, or buy a can of R12 refrigerant from an auto parts house to charge the A/C on your pre '96 car. You can't - period. What part of that is not understandable?

Being ignorant of the loss of rights to keep and bear arms in England and Australia is no excuse to misdirect the clear intent of the proposed regulation in this case. Anyone who "needs to have the hysteria justified" is coloring the argument to prevent action - and is therefore a proponent of the end result. They often get swept up in the loss of rights more directly, too - as those who watched first the Jews, then the gypsies, then the Catholics, then anyone who objected did - in Nazi Germany. May I suggest pulling your intercranial matter from the third point of contact in the prone landing fall and start to use it for its intended purpose?

Write letters. If there is a local office staffed for your reps, call them and politely enquire what the elected official's stance will be on the regulation. Representatives and Congressmen don't like hordes of voters taking up their time on an issue, and work to quickly resolve the problem so they can get back to their agendas - which are usually about themselves.

As for the President, yes, lots of people like to blame the incumbent regardless of who is in the office. It seems to be a tell tale sign of complete ignorance to assume the President is responsible for every ill of history and each act and thought of any government employee in their administration. If the President actually had that power, then please explain why the current office holder is there? Wouldn't the last one have put all the opposing party members in barbed wire camps and still be holding office?

And the current one could have simply uttered an Executive order without all the pretense of a customs regulation. Write letters, the system is still working, and those who don't think it does just contribute to the problem.

E-mails don't mean squat to congressmen. There are just too many ways to fake 'em. They can come from anywhere in the world, from anyone. So, print it, sign it, and put a stamp on it. Read and follow the guidelines on AKTI or Kniferights first about how to write an effective letter. But do so now!

Hate to disagree with you, Chuck, but that's just not the case anymore. We have spoken with both House and Senate staff who handle messages from constituents and an expert who was involved in analyzing the systems used by Congressional offices to handle communications with consituents. Email is the most effective way to get your message heard. That meesssage was consistant with everyone we spoke with. It drives them off the wall that many still believe, as do you, that a snail mailed letter is the best way, because it just isn't anymore. The offices are run by young staffers who have fully embraced modern communications, especially email from constituents. They do not want snail mail, they hate it (and faxes as well). We offer tips based on these interviews and expert advice on our Communicating with Congress page.

If you want to campaign for an issue, as we are doing here, a PERSONALIZED email is the most effective way to do it. A form email alone won't be as effective, you need to PERSONALIZE the first paragraph, at least, for best results.

Check out Knife Rights' Communicating with Congress page for more tips.

The Funny and Sad part about this is, the Congress will sign Bills into Law that they do not Read. When they will not take the time to bother reading what is being signed into law or is being spent (the peoples business) leaves me thinking that, I have little faith that someone outside a staffer with other interests will be reading my letter, if that.

None the less, my thoughts aside. There is only one choice till the next election is to Write letters, Email and yes, make Phone calls to their offices.

Gus please PM me if I am stepping out of line in this thread, I am trying to stay out of trouble here. Thanks :)

Well, now I'm a bit confused.I already sent my letters via snail mail.Should I also sent emails now?

I noticed this morning that World Net Daily finally ran with the story so apparently some of the contacts written to them have finally hit home with someone that carries or cares about knives.

I got one of my friend's attention yesterday and had him alerted to it and noticed this morning he put it on his national web site that gets lots of traffic.

After my letters to Congress and Senate I joined George and looked into this too!

By the way, my vote is that we try to be supportive of each other and for causes that we members have in common.

Let me ask this. Where does this leave fixed blades that are legal carry size and multitools? Obviously, the LM Wave, Surge, Skeletools, Power Assist are all one hand openers.

(spydienative) i was building barbecues today & flicked open my gerber multi tool thinking the same thing. will i be charged with a felony one day for flicking open my multi tool?it can almost be considered possesion of a burglary tool,if you can believe that. what will become of fixed blades,i hate to think about it......

Have you all of you who are concerned, emailed your Senators & Congressmen?

I sent 7 letters today. All of them being three pages long. I really hope this works itself out in the right direction. Most of my knives were gifted to me and they're not going anywhere as far as I'm concerned. Legal or not.

Last I heard snail mail must be xrayed and inspected for any other hazmat contamination. Think about it, Congress isn't about to get anthrax dumped in their in-box again. Security always trumps.

Personalized e-mail is just fine and preferred - it's easier to count up the yay/nay and get a quick idea of just which way the wind blows - which is what we want our elected blowhards to get busy doing.

Hello Mr. Russell,

Silly question, does anyone know exactly where all this originated from ?

It had to be one person.

One person always gets an idea or thought and talks about this idea to others and then it spreads.

Does this question make sense ?

One person started this mess. It looks like we need to find out who and also contact him or her if possible.

And thank you for everything you do for all of us knife people.

Robbie Roberson.
