Recommendation? Spartan Harsey, between CRK and Hinderer?

No choil is the best choil šŸ˜‚. The only Hinderer’s I’ve missed were the choilless - mean as they get.

OP might need an Emerson …
Now your talking! A seax would fit the bill! Personally I think OP needs a new Talos, the action on them is sorcery! The version 1 one you sent me is excellent, but the new ones are MK3 level smooth.

I have some CRK, Hinderer and Spartan. I have a ZT designed by RH. Then, I have a Spyderco that is absolutely perfect, but don't carry as it isn't my style.

Buy what you can, use what you buy.

Been carrying a Hinderer and a Spartan for over two years because I like them and they work just fine.

I’ve owned most of the knives mentioned minus the Curtis. Have to say the demo ad 20 is the sharpest out of the box.

Would an XM-18 3.5 with a slicer grind cut better than an xm-24 Bowie?
How does the 3.5 do with a spear point? I haven’t handled many hinderers but as I said, I have a 0562 that I do like. I see it’s .156 thickness and hinderer slicer is .165. XM-24 is .185

I’ve yet to see a sharp Hinderer out of the box. The skinny slicers are by far the best performers for cutting things. The regular stock slicers are the second best once you put an edge on them. I did have 1 spear point in 20CV that actually cut pretty well, came to me used and I’m not sure if it had been reprofiled. The 2 24’s I had came with better factory edges than most 18’s I owned. I’m probably going to piss people off with this rant.. if you want a knife to cut things with Hinderer’s take some sharpening work. The SHF can open fast once broken it, nowhere as fast as a crisp flipper on bearings though. I would seriously consider a Curtiss F3 if you want speed, cutting ability and quality.

Properly lubed/adjusted my large SHFs thumb flick extremely fast
I am sure that the difference in time between the two is fractions of a second and you would never be able to tell much difference. I just think the mechanism of the XM-24 flipper lever is easier to master and consistently open that miniscule quicker.

I have only seen perhaps two or three knives that were what I would consider really sharp when factory new. The Rockstead Kom, a Benchmade Gold class 49 Kriss butterfly and an older Randall 1-7 are the only ones I can think of. Knives that I want to be extremely sharp get put on my Wicked Edge sharpener.

The slicer is the best cutter. Bowie, Spear and Skinner have basically the same bevels. Best Hinderer cutter is the skinny slicer.

I don’t know how we got from XM24 to subminiature iMamba and VECP.

Iā€˜m just kidding, guys :)
YOU KNOW WHY WE'RE HERE, come on, now! 🤣

"Oh you want XYZ? Very cool, but have you considered (insert like five other knives totally unrelated)?" Classic Bladeforums!

Well… I bought a Hinderer XM-18 3.5ā€ sliver flipper in battle blue with a red scale. I think I’m going to sell my XM-24 Bowie with taco bearings in it (which I see they no longer sell) and move it onto somebody who will use it.

I have done my best to keep my collection to three. That said, if I find one of the Magnacut bladed models that speaks to me.....I'm open to my collection totaling four! :D
I've been searching Spartan Harsey threads the last few days as I've been in the same boat as you, for a little while anyway, keeping my collection to three more recently after trying to stay content with my two--a PJ old pivot in S35Vn worker bought as a user off the Exchange and my Northwest Coast Edition in S45VN which I EDC but keep nice. Then abbazaba abbazaba put his custom-ordered large up for sale, done up in the same colorway as the 3.25's (unavailable stock in the large) with smooth Type 2 anodizing, gold/bronze hardware, S45VN, the new pivot, and it even had USA engraved on the lockside. OK, I was good with three just like you.

Well...just like you mentioned, I was too tempted by a Magnacut bladed model that speaks to me when abbazaba DM'd and offered me his Flourishes at a nice price. I've always loved that handle pattern and it's waiting for me at my local PO as I write after spending an extra day at the RI USPS distribution center. Oh well, I hope I can be satisfied at four...

I'd say the SHF is the most similar to a Hinderer, but I wouldn't call it a more slicey Hinderer. If you want a flick-friendly knife that cuts and feels like a Sebenza, the Umnumzaan is a step in that direction and the Arno Bernard iMamba is one more step.

Personally, I couldn't get into my Hinderer and sold it. Although it was well-made, the quality didn't seem much higher than a ZT Hinderer and I didn't love the design. I'd say my SHF is about the same level of quality, so not a great quality to price ratio, but it's a keeper because I really like the design (especially the lasered version I got). If that's enough for you, go for it, but don't expect it to be more like a CRK in any way other than the shape.

And I'll put one pic in this thread too, just to be even and fair. I'd say that I feel like the SHF leans more towards Hinderers in overall feel, style, and fit n finish as well. Big beefy sons a Bs, well made, that can also be dressed up very nicely. I still say that the fit n finish isn't quite on the same level as CRKs, however out of all my years being addicted to knives, I've only ever seen one or two companies that I feel manufacture with the same level of detail as CRK does. That said, most people would never spot a difference in fit n finish between them, you have to be a real knife psycho who pays very close attention to the finishing levels underneath the bead blasting and anodizing along the chamfers and what not to notice it. I think a lot of knife addicts don't even notice it honestly, and all the better for it. You got to be borderline OCD to notice those types of things. That first Sebenza just really spoiled me and now I measure every other knife against it.

I do not own a SHF so have no opinion on one. These are not inexpensive choices nor are they made in the US, the Grimsmo Rask, Shiro Hati and a Herman Slim or Sting will have a thicker blade stock than the CRK, deploy faster than any Hinderer or CRK and are all great slicers, Just an option
