I’ve been eyeing these Spartan Harley knives for quite some time. The thing that keeps me from pulling the trigger is the jimping. It looks aggressive. Frankly it’s what has kept me from pulling the trigger on a Hinderer as well. Curious to know - is it as aggressive as it looks? I have a CS AD15 - the jimping on that knife sucks. I have a number of the ZT Hinderer designs - the jimping on those knives are borderline IMO. I just don’t get the appeal of deep jimping grinds with sharp angles - some feel like dull serrations to me. For reference, jimping that I find useful and pleasant is the style CRK uses.
Anyone able to give me a comparison of the jimping on this Harsey with a ZT Model?

Hinderer jimping *looks* agressive, but is smoothed out really well and never snags on skin.
Spartan Harseys feel exactly the way they look - they're super aggressive, with sharp edges, and little to no chamfering.
It's fine in normal use.
Under heavy use/pressure, the jimping on the spine might bite into your skin.
The jimping on the blade is a bit more rounded and is fine when choking too.
On a sidenote, if you want a Hinderer with minimal jimping, give an Eklipse a whirl.
It's actually my favourite Hinderer to date, w/ regards to ergonomics and (lack of) hotspots.
Actually, after re-reading your post, my grittiness is not on the ramp, but just after or just before you disengage or before you engage the lock
Did yours have that as well?
I was fortunate to snag one from DLTPlague Doctor! Awesome!!
It diminishes over time and use, but the blade does tend to slow down a bit due to the ramp. The older models (pre-2020, no ramp) are smoother overall. But I have yet to experience or hear of any 2020s having issues, unlike some cases with older models, so I'll take the trade off.Actually, after re-reading your post, my grittiness is not on the ramp, but just after or just before you disengage or before you engage the lock

Awesome. Thats great to hear. Thank youIt smoothed out.
I can still hear it if i put the knife against my ear while doing it, but if you didn't remind me of it, i wouldn't know it's there, lol

ooohhh...you're in the dating phase with the SHF. Play with it for a week or two. The honeymoon is sweeter than yoohoo.Ya know, I can't hear any grittiness, I feel it and it keeps the blade from free falling any. If it were to smooth out, then the blade would free fall a little after disengaging the lock. But, as of now, it doesn't free fall one little bit
Lol, I just need to listen to what yall are telling me.ooohhh...you're in the dating phase with the SHF. Play with it for a week or two. The honeymoon is sweeter than yoohoo.

Chazzy told me the same thing.
Its just its almost perfect and ya already want it there! Lol
Thanx man, and I will do.
Wow, this thread has really exploded sinceMacLaren1 got his knife. Way to go, P--if I owned a newspaper I'd certainly want you posting comments there to boost interest and circulation.
Anyway, I've been carrying my SHF NW today, mostly working at my desk on load calcs for an upcoming project permit, and have been fooling with the knife and thinking about this scratchiness thing mentioned here and in some communication with Mac yesterday. I never had a strong sense of it when my knife was brand new, though there was a little something there.
Whatever there maybe was isn't an issue anymore, as the knife has broken in very nicely, but I think it's related to the detent ball ramp, is definitely a break-in thing, and more of a shudder than something abrasive. The detent ball will have more surface contact traveling through the concave ramp track than it will on the rest of its arc along the flat of the blade tang and I think there's more need for things to wear in along that part of the journey. Also, despite the ramp, which I do like, the ball still has to overcome a little bit of an edge if you haven't moved the lockbar out of the way enough, and that has to wear in too. I noticed too, following the line in the grease that's come off my detent ball, that it's path through the ramped section kinda changes sides, so there's another thing to wear in a bit.
As to my older, S35VN pre-2020 PJ, SHF, it is indeed smoother and freer than my new knife, but then I'm the third owner and that knife very nicely worn in.
Here's some pics of the NW I shot today while escaping my desk to stretch my legs....
