But, is a tick a spider?

Or does it just have 8 legs and its just another bug?

Bugs (coleoptera) as insects have 6 legs..... ticks (ixodides) are arachnids (=spiders) and have 8 :)....

so a tick is really a fat spider!

But as mentioned, the name comes from the classic cars (that Sal likes) anyway :)

As I recall, the Spyder was originally a kind of uncovered wagon, and the term was adopted by the Italians and later some Japanese to describe convertibles.

Why would you name a knife company "convertible company?" Maybe Spyder had better legal protection since it wasn't considered a word in English.

Oh, and just a little side note, Spyder isn't just a classic car term, it's well used today too. For instance, you can buy a Ferrari F430 Spyder, or a Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder

Actually Coleoptera are the beetles and bugs are Hemiptera- the kind that have the part of their shell near their head hard like a beetle and the part near the "tail" end like a leathery wing (literally- Half Wing).

It might be noted also that the first product Sal made was a "third hand" which might look like a spider of some sort. So, Sal enjoys nice cars, often called Spyder and made a product that looked like a Spider. Long story short, Spyderco.

One of the first pages of Spyderco story has something about it IIRC.

Sorry, here I was mixing up the english words "bug" and "beetle". (how could I, knowing both the band AND the Volkswagen car ??)

(The word "bug" meant "beetle" to me, but after translating it with leo.org, I see that it actually can stand for a variety of (sub)orders like Hemiptera in general, Heteroptera, Coleoptera, well, basically half of all Neopterae....you name it.....at least they're all insects :))

Well anyway, you are of course right (and I've learnt some more english here  :foot:)

but

basically, ticks are still spiders ;)
and that was my point in the first place :D

I have never seen the logo as a tick. I hate ticks. Even if I thought it looked like a tick I would put it out of my mind. Because I hate ticks. Vile creatures no better than a mosquito. That being said. Now that you mention it, well err umm it does look a bit like a Tick. Did I mention that I hate Ticks? :D Love Spiders.

The Spyderco catalog covers have been great over the years as well.

Well that little tick has been sucking the blood out of my wallet for some time. It kinda grows on ya...
:D:D Now that's funny!!!!
