Special Buck 119 special

My! That's a handsome knife:thumbup: :D .

Does Buck do custom piece work...if I sent in a 119 would they polish it up:)?

Thanks for posting the pic. Preston

I can see the pin in the brass better than in the aluminum...looks almost like a different place than the other pic...

Preston,
I think at Buck, they mirror polish the blades before assembling and a final edge. Interesting what happens when a 3600 rpm buffer grabs a blade:eek:

I asked Joe About that Preston,
He said it was very time consuming and labor added alot. Also you get a two tone finish because they cant buff right up against the fingerguard...
That is why I went this route! I am SUPER HAPPY!!! :D:D:D

Oh Yeah, What Scott said!!!!

thanks jim i think ive got it now;) , i wish i would have thought of that i had to pay almost 200 for each of mine:eek: it would have been a lot cheaper to have them do a custom , nice job and thanks for sharing

Hey Buckman,
It just depends how you look at it I guess! I would have gladly paid that for a production knife but, They are almost impossible to come by!
Mine is a 1 of 1, that has alot of sentimental value now.
I met Joe H. at the Blade Show '06. He is a super guy! Great to talk to very knowledgeable and just an all around class act! He had several at the show to give as awards for displays (that he made). He did an awesome job!
So after the show I emailed him to see what he could/ would do.
He came up with a few Ideas! He has some awesome designs and ideas about knives and it is just a pleasure to have a pair that he made and designed! NONE of the other knives in my collection even compare to these 2 (in my Opinion) And I think that is saying alot!!!!!!!!!!! he is super busy though and I dont know how much time he has to do this kind of thing?
Joe if you read this- THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!! The rest of my knives pale in comparison!!!!!
Jim

Jim and Scott, thanks...I think that I'll call Leroy and see what magic he might be able to do...if anyone could it would be him. Preston

Preston dont get me wrong- Buck will do it! It just may not look the same
(two toned by fingerguard)
Also Scott, I like how you say "interesting what happens when a 3600 Rpm buffer grabs a blade"... :D I tried- its not at all interesting!!!! If it doesn't tweak your wrist it ruins a nice buck knife!

I keep a plastic garbage can full of rags under my buffing wheel... ;)

hi trax is that for a soft landing zone or quick access to band-aids ;) :D

Go ahead, laugh...you'll find out quick enough... :grumpy:

On another forum, an old knifesmith had a pic of his workspace for grinding/buffing...the floor was littered with old grinder [knifemakers name for belt sander] belts...I couldn't figure out why he was such a slob...

...Now I know...they're cheaper than a mattress... :D

I really wish you guys wouldn't post pics of nice knives and talk up how sharp the steel is; how well made the handles are; how nice looking the overall shape is...

Now you got me wanting a 119 Special...So I went on eBay and found one...

Should be here sometime this week...Nothing special (no pun), just a plain-Jane 119...hopefully, with the newer blend lines (it's an 88, like Prestons)...

I think I'll peddle that pre-86 120 and get a later one to match the 119...I'm really not a fan of the blended transition lines... :(

Haebbie - Do you have a camera/scanner??? Shoot/Scan your 119 & post the pic/scan... :)

Edit: You can open a free account at Photobucket.com to store pics; we can walk you through how to *link* a pic here from Photobucket...

Ok, now there is something else for me to learn from the members. That's one reason I like this bar.
Can someone post a pre-transition and one with the newer blend lines?
Thanks,
Goose.

I'll Be right back!!
<some time passes...and why not?>
Hows that?
Jim

Excellent!!! Your pic also shows the difference in the pre-86 edge (or lack of it) and the new edge of that Idaho... ;)

So I'm convinced this 120 I have is original...(not amateurly refinished)...

Jim - Does your pre-86 119 (or the Idaho) have two different color spacers, fore and aft??? The one I have coming seems to have a red/maroon spacer at the pommel, and black at the guard...

Hi Trax Mine all appear to just be brown? or some shade of brown they do vary a little.
Sorry about the time delay, I had to go dig them out and take some pics!!!
You will like the "plain Jane" 119!!!!

My "time passes" comment was a quote from a Walt Kelly book...I always liked it... ;) :D

Now that you're posting thumbnails, why don't you show Haebbie what the Plain Jane looks like, so he can see how much better looking the one he has is... ;)

Just for you trax! Just for showing me how to "thumb nail"!! LOL
Some time is going to pass...

Top pic is another "special" special! Inverted stamp
Middle pic is a standard 119 Special Idaho stamp
Bottom Pic is "special" 119 Special 1989 stamp

Thanks Wh4f!!! That Idaho 119 shows a marked difference in the semi-hollow grind than the earlier 119's...and it looks an awful lot like the grinds put on the BCCI 110 and 112 "Fund Raisers"...you can see how the tip has less "meat" to the upper part of the tip with that grind...it's 'swoopier', but thinner...

But I do like that marked blend line...I *hope* the one I have coming has that line... :o

I'm also kind of disappointed that the brass doesn't look as attractive as the polished aluminum...and the newer pommel has a straighter hook than the old curved ones...hmmm...I have some chunks of 304 SS around here somewhere...

Trax,
I like the looks of the older Semi hollow grind! BUT I really like the smooth,
yet sharp transition of the new grind! I also love the tight machining marks on the new ones! If you look real close at the blood grooves on the 2, the older ones have real deep almost like scratches in the blood groove.
The new ones look like CNC machining. I like that! Also the new grind to me is easier to sharpen and holds a better edge! Never broke or damaged either one!!!!!
Jim
