Special Case knife as present

Great Eastern Cutlery, huh? I will look into it. I guess I was going Case because everyone has heard of it. I don't want him thinking I got him some cheapie off brand, even if it is actually a high quality. I don't know my dad that well, since I just met him last month.

The engraving thing... definitely a personal thing that will please some.. not so much others. That being the "CASE' (pun intended).. I would vote against it :-)

But.. wait... maybe just his initials engraved into the bolsters.... hmmm.. that may be pretty darn cool! ;-)

Nice pics. I will look into the Large Stockman, Rancher, and Workhorse Whittler. I wish I knew if he preferred a locking blade or not. I will try to find out. I would feel beyond horrible if he was used to locking blades and I got him a non-locking and he cut himself somehow.

One of the most popular Case patterns around here seems to be the Small Texas Jack. I think it would be a good medium sized choice unless you think he'd like a larger knife like a Trapper. If you think he'd prefer a locking knife, then you're probably on the right track with the Mini Copperlock idea.

My personal opinion about engraving is that less is usually more. I'm not crazy about the really fancy stuff. That's just my view though, and everybody has different tastes.

Whatever you decide on, I'm sure he will appreciate it. Buying knives for others can be a tricky thing. You never know if that person will like the knife enough to use it. At the other end of the spectrum, it could be that it's liked so much the person is afraid to use it.

@Pocketknife Jimmy...Maybe you are right about the engraving. I always think of my stepdad when I use my Russlock, which isn't engraved, and I have had it around 15 years. I just want him to know how important he is to me.

Yeah, I was worried that he would be afraid to use it too. I am probably shying away from abalone for that reason, and I am wondering if scrolled bolsters are too much.

Yeah.. I can understand your wanting to make it special. His initials would not be anything that would make the knife gaudy... but yet shows that little extra step you took, beyond it's purchase, to make it that much more special :-)

Well the full sized Copperlock is a nice knife. I've got one of those, let me see if i can dig out a picture. Being a single blade it's quite thin for carry and feels slim in the hand. It has a nice sturdy large clip blade.

For a non locking Case knife in the fairly large category, you have the '75 Large Stockman, the '54 Trapper, the '546 Back Pocket and it's two-bladed version, the Panama Trapper. Just a bit smaller is the Copperhead, which is a nice 2-bladed jack knife.

You could go with a Cigar Whittler which is a big knife and an unusual pattern.

GEC makes excellent knives. They are a small company though, and I think you would be hard pressed to find many people outside of the knife community that has even heard of them. It is certainly understandable that you would want to go with a bigger brand name since you don't know what his level of knife interest is. No matter what brand you buy, I'm sure it will be special to him just because it's the first birthday present he will ever have gotten from you.

Down here in TN it's 4" or less for general carry, unless you use it in your trade, or for hunting, fishing, and camping. Very few traditionals have over 4" blades so I'm good there. Looks like your Indiana state laws are pretty wide open with respect to knives, even fully automatic openers.

I never thought of it that way. I guess I wasn't buying presents at 3. I'm going to have to hit the sack, but I will be looking up all these knife types and I appreciate all the thoughts from everyone. I will check this thread again tomorrow.

By the way, I saw a Back Pocket knife at dealer today - those things are pretty big. I think you'd need a pocket sheath to keep it vertical.

I also have to recommend GEC.
They sparked my love for traditionals and I dont think you can get anything better for the money.
Case also makes a decent knife, but GEC is in a class of its own and has a great selection of patterns and materials.
Definitely cool that you're getting to know your dad.

Hi, and welcome :)
First, nice idea to gift a knife to your dad (or to anyone else) ;)
As for brands and patterns, I will throw in a few ideas. A stockman or trapper is probably your best shot, or a single bladed lockback hunter (such as a GEC #72) if he prefers locking knives.
As for engraving it, my vote is against it. It's the gift thing that will make the knife special, and the pattern 8and quality of the knife) that will determine how much use it will see.

Standard Trapper 6254 or Standard Stockman 6375 should foot the bill. He's a Texas born machinist I would think a standard size would be more his style. Just my opinion though.

I would lean heavier towards the 6375, more blade options for more needs!

If he's not a knife nut like us you may want to stick with Case. Most non knife nuts I show my GEC's to have no idea what they are looking at but all of them would know a Case.
