Special Pieces that may not have received Deserved Exposure.

However, all I currently see are references to some Sfreddo piece. Until some sign develops that a few high end, high value, little known pieces emerge from obscurity in this thread, I think I perhaps should hold back displaying the piece, maybe?

it may perhaps make more sense to start another thread for the several I had in mind (ones that are rather more significant than this - and not seen by the public in a long, long time), and also post just one into this thread.

an extraordinary piece that is at least the equal of any that appeared at the AKI or, at any point recently, on this or any other forum.

Those are opinions . . . and perhaps it is just me, but they seem to me posted with a certain implication of universal acceptance or fact.

I saw and handled that Warenski-Erickson knife. It is a fine knife, but I cannot say that for my tastes or in my opinion, it is superior to many other outstanding pieces that I saw there, including right off the bat some knives by Virgil England, H.H. Frank, Steve Hoel, or even Steve Johnson's Christine Fighter which I adored but which was out of my league. And that is no knock at all on Julie or Curt, as I bought their Persian Style Fighter at the show and obviously appreciate their work.

It is all just opinions after all, right?

And speaking of opinions, it is my opinion that the pieces by Rodrigo and Tim Hancock that Kevin posted above are high end, high value, and spectacular. I should disclose I own other knives by both makers, so perhaps I am biased. But I would be elated to own either of these pieces, and I am sure I have a lot of company there.

These forums are all about pretty much nothing but opinions. So absolutely, because opinions count!

Bob,

I hope you will start a thread and post some of those other pictures here. You always post pictures of such beautiful knives, so I always enjoy seeing your pictures - even if they sometimes leave drool on my keyboard.

Tim's "Fancy Hunters" are always a treat for the eye and even more so to handle. The last time Tim and I spoke on the subject he had created less than a dozen in the series each being highly embellished using premium materials and being quite different.
I've been fortunate enough to have owned two of this outstanding knives.

This is another piece that hasn't seen much exposure but has been mentioned a couple times in Steven's AKI review.

Hancock, Tim-Tim is an awesome guy. His fancy hunter was, as they always are, a fantastic bargain, and an object that I had lust for especially this year, 7 bars of alternating Turkish Twist damascus and blackwood handles.....someday I hope to be drawn for one of these knives. I dream of them sometimes.

Cool stuff. I wasn't there as you all know but from the picture I have seen I love Tim's fancy hunter. Cool steel and it just has the Hancock hunter flow thing going on.

Sweet, I would love to see a more detailed view of that middle part of the handle.

Kevin, I was just talking on another Thread about "Opening-up" underexposed images
and thought it worth touching-up your picture to display the full beauty of Tim's knife
and sheath, and demonstrate the hidden potential in a digital picture...

Akll the best,

In fact, since I meant this as kind of a "catch all" thread for special knives, here's a few more examples from Tim's "Fancy Hunter" series.

Don't see many of these Hancock Fancy Hunters. If you have photos of others please post them up.

There are a few in Tim's book, "The Western Bladesmith"... :)

Since you asked.. :)

But I wouldn't call these under exposed knives. I promote these as much as possible! The first image was given to me courtesy of David Darom. Its basically the file used in his book. The other photo I believe is the original.

I could definately use the new Turkish Twist in this collection. Maybe one day.. :) Actually there is nothing stopping me from trying to aquire all of them. Well the fact that I have no money right now might be a problem...

This was one of my four favorite knives of the entire AKI show. The Damascus pattern on this fancy hunter is quite different than on any of the other fancy hunters I have seen. No offense, but that picture does not do it justice - the Damascus looks sort of washed out in the picture, while it is sharp and pronounced in the actual knife. I don't know who bought it, but I hope that maybe he/she will have a professional picture taken of that beauty and posted or published somewhere, so I can drool over it all over again.

Here's another special piece by Michael Jankowsky. Actually, extraordinary in my opinion.
Michael's a fine maker from Germany. He posted this piece (his last of 2011) over on the CKCA forum and I thought folks here
would enjoy seeing it as well.

Specification:
Steel: ELMAX SUPER CLEAN, 60 HRC
Construction: Integral
Gripp: Siberian Jade setting in Sterling Silver
Engraving by: Kati Mau
Leather Sheath: Complete Crocodile with engraved Silver Plates(sorry no picture), Crocodile incl. Permit/Cites

GREAT thread Kevin! Coincidentally, I was just perusing "The Western Bladesmith" last evening. Tim is an exceptionally talented man and his knifemaking skills are impressive.

That Jankowsky piece is AWESOME. He makes fine knives and Kati Mau is a VERY talented engraver.

Rodrigo had posted some work a while ago and I too loved that sword. I was impressed by his adding to his amazing skills with the gold inlay work.

While I have been a long time fan of Julie's carving and engraving, the California dagger did not appeal to me as much as the knife in Virginian's avatar.

some of the finest knives ive seen, beautiful! i wish i had a way to learn that kind of craftsmanship.

As much as I enjoy Tim Hancock's work generally, that piece is a miss, as far as I'm concerned.

Here is a set of three Full Integrals made by Edmund Davidson
to commemorate his his 25th Anniversary as a custom knifemaker.
The set, made of CPM 154-cm steel, was finished in October 2011...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)
