Specific SAK tools...why?

Hope all you guys and gals are doing well tonight...

There is no doubt that the Vic Farmer is by far the most popular SAK in this forum (I might be wrong about this, since I can't find a poll that reflects this). But, it sure seems to be mentioned quite frequently. I would assume that form and function is the reason for this choice.

What about the other tools? More specifically, what individual tool or tools do you find yourself wanting on the Farmer?

Thanks for your input in advance.

Only scissors. I would happily give up the bottle opener/screwdriver for scissors. Keep the can opener.

I would be cool with that, I have no use for a bottle opener. A small blade is also something I wouldn't mind in place of it.

the alox saks just feel tough in the hand they sem lke they can put up with alot....the thicker blade is nice the saw and awl are great....for woods use they could forgo the bottle opener and adda small blade..in reality the vic camper or huntsman is almost the the ideal combo of tools...(but not in alox)

-stout main blade
-saw
-awl (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=526149)
A primary use is obviously as a leather working tool, at which it certainly excels. Even with access to several tools, I often reach for my simple SAK awl to stitch a hole or pull a string through.

Firesteel scrapers? End the debate, the awl wins. It's got a sharp edge, perfect size scraping area, and a large built in handle. No more gnawing through the skin on my fingers when using a hacksaw piece, and no buggering up the spine of the main blade (rare, but hey...).

Woodwork? It's perfect for drilling small holes, which happen to be of perfect diameter to accept some 550 cord. Just this morning I drilled a piece of fatwood for attachment to a firesteel, and the hole looks better than if a powerdrill had done it. Obviously there are numerous bushcraft/woodworking uses for a good, simple hole.

How about pulling out small splinters and thorns? Or digging/probing in smaller depths of ground? Need to scrape the outer bark off a piece of wood into fuzzy, light-able portions? Too lazy to carve a quick skewer to pick up hot food with? Trying to undo that incredibly stubborn knot? Losing weight oddly rapidly on the trail and need to tighten up that belt?

Enter the awl, that most versatile and often underrated tool.

For me, my ideal alox knife would essentially be the Huntsman...if Vic produced alox models w/ tools on the backside. I find myself not really using my Farmer very often because I like the small blade for finer work. It is a spectacular tool, but I would definitely like to see it improved on a bit.

My ideal alox knife is the one I carry everyday...

I like everything about the Farmer except I do wish they would incorporate the tweezers in some fashion. Even though they are small, I use them far too often with the Camper model. I do also use the corkscrew occasionally as well, but there are other ways to open a bottle that are fairly simple. When tweezers are needed, not much else can be substituted that will work well, if at all.

^^^ Which model is that?

It made me look too-- like Steve Martin, "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?"

:D :D

I have a Deluxe Tinkerer, it's sweet (scissors, small pliers, big and small blade) but no saw.

Just found this:
$16.88 for a silver Farmer!

Then this one for $24

What's the diff between alox-special edition and alox ribbed handles?

the saw and the main blade are my only 2 requirements.. everything else comes second....:) i do love the tweezers and toothpick...

don't post prices..every time I see a farmer on sale I have to get it....my wife is gonna kill me.

This is what I want (Electrician):

But with a saw (electrician plus), and the can opener rather than (or with) bottle opener.

Oh and RED (my fav. color)

I love the short sheepsfoot blade and the single serration in it- I actually use this blade and awl the most.
