Speed holes - good or evil?

I'm not sure if it counts, but one of the things about the sebenza 21 that I didn't like was the hole in the show side scale. Didn't change the functionality of the knife one bit, but I find the solid scale of the 31 much more appealing.

This Silver Falcon is the second one that I bought. It was purchased this year. When I bought my first one in 1980 or 1981 it stood out among the other knives in the display case because of the holes. The holes had a lot to do with the reason that I bought it. I like the aesthetics for some reason.

That's the exact version of the Silver Falcon that Sal Glesser modified to make his first prototype. I guess he thought it needed one more hole.

I don't like them on anything newer than my Kershaw Vapor II or CUDA EDC. For that matter, I don't like them on anything older, either. I guess, when it comes down to it - I probably wouldn't like those two if I hadn't had them for over 20 years.

I wanted a Zinker for a while...unfortunately, it seemed to be a period during which he was obsessed with holes as I couldn't find any of the models I liked without them. (I had seen hole-free versions previously, or they wouldn't have sparked my interest)

I'm lost. First I didn't know what speed holes are. After seeing the pictures in this thread I realize they are holes on knife handles. Still don't know how they are related to speed, and speed of what?
