Spike a thon its on

All right I feel pretty good about this one. It took three tries to get here. I stopped 3/4 of the way through the second one as I had made the same mistake on it, as I on did the first one. I hope some other makers join in. This is my entry. I learned some new things, so it was well worth the time I spent playing in the fire.
OAL is 9" blade is 5" handle is iron wood.

Dave is it to late to back out :p man don't know how to compete with that but I will give it my best shot.

Hay Mike what's the worst thing that could happen. you teach yourself a thing or two and wind up with an x miss gift for a friend. hay feel free to try the san mai thing that goes for all makers. that would like to try it it is a lot of fun. hay Don who will be the first maker to slide a big wedge of w2 in a spike. that could be cool. so hear is a little of what I learned by doing 3 of them. if you thin and widen the end of the spike be for you split it things work way better. you can put in a bigger wedge and there is a lot less spike to remove. and less chance of spike steel stuck in your pattern. hope this helps.

I have my damascus for the edge about done, I ran out of propane though. :( Now I need to go fill all 5 tanks up again.

Cool Jon I am glad to hear your going to do a spike. I came up with a cool prize for the spike king. and the more makers that join in the bigger the prize will be.

Very nice knives so far guys. Now I have been into trains since I was a kid. I have loved knives since I was a kid, but did not really get into them till 2 years ago. But I never heard of a railroad spike knife. How did I miss this? Not that I could afford one. But they are neat to look at. I knew a guy made a chissel out of one. But not a knife. Cool. Keep them coming guys. Love it.

Keep watching Buckfan I have a good feeling today we might see one or two.

Im working on mine but it is slow going, should be done hopefully by the end of next week. It is hard to forge a knife while in Mexico on vacation with your wife. :)

Jon I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I thought we would have seen one or two by now but I still have hope.

Dave, I have had a killer back problem for two weeks now and have not been able to forge.
Probably wont get mine done, but we'll see.

Don I know how that can be I am just getting over one that lasted a month. And I have been seeing a back cracker for two years. I find I just ask to much from my back some times. I hope it feels better soon. Drink lot's of water that dose help.

I have mine started :) getting ready to attempt my first san mai weld here in a few hours. I will try to get some pics :)

Thanks Dave! Bad part is my right arm is numb, still works but feels weird.

Gettin better and I'm forging a little now, so we'll see.

Well I got mine started and is not much to look at yet but here are a few pics. I have to go to out of town for work so I won't be able to get back to this till Saturday.

I wanted more mass in the handle so I cut it and folded it over back onto itself and forge welded it. Next I will split the blade end and forge weld a W2 bit into it.

Here are my spikes, I will start with the large spike more on the 2 smaller spikes later.
