Spike a thon its on

You guys are clearly having WAYYYY to much fun.

Nice spikes so far. I gotta see what Don makes, as I can't imagine a rugged knife out of his shop.

I'm no maker, but I had to give this a try, if nothing else, just to apprecaite you guys a little more

Here's my twisted butter knife :D

I decided to use this project as a chance to grow :) So here is my first solo damascus, first san mai, first railroad spike knife WIP. Hope to have the knife finished before New Years but might not make the deadline.

I started by hot cutting the head off the spike (will be used intact as the buttplate) then I drew out the spike into a flat bar and cut it in half and cut a piece of damascus from a twist billet I had made a week before but hadn't made a knife out of. Then I san mai'd it all up and made a blade blank out of it.

More to come tomorrow. :)

Looking good guys

Hey Dave maybe you should extend the deadline to middle of January give Don some time to get better and join the fun. Well I will be heading out early in the morning so I won't have anymore to post till after Christmas. Hope some others post what they are making.

Eli That is a good looking butter knife. thanks for jumping in. I dig your anvil . Mike your right we will give everyone that is working on a spike the time to get it done. As the more we get the more fun this will be. Jon that is looking very nice I would say your growing in leaps and bounds, I did not think I would would be learning as much as I did when I started this but I was wrong. I learned a lot making my spike I am now going to try a full damascus integral based on what I learned doing my spike.

The damascus integral sounds like a cool idea!

Thanks for the kind words, I did mess up on my san mai welds. :( I think the flaw came from the forge temp having 300 degree swings. My propane hose kept icing up and making things difficult. I will still finish it up since it is my first damascus knife.

Lookin good guys. I'm actually forging a little, had something that needed to get done before Christmas. Doc said not to do anything but that ain't goin to happen. I did find one spike in the shop, so will work on it soon and post some pics.

Hey Dave, if the deadline is extended to mid Jan. I'll jump in too.I get home Jan.7th, and can knock something out in a week at least.

Thats sounds good Don and John. Let's leave it open for awhile, maybe some more folks will jump in.

I'm blown away by some of the stuff I'm seeing here. Just when I thought I
'knew' what a rail road spike knife looked like:rolleyes:

You guys are leaping out of the box.

I am going to have to start over, this one didn't come out very well. Part of the RR spike de-laminated and fell off while I was grinding. I did finish it with a very quick dirty handle and finish, just enough for it to be a usable knife.

Here is the sad conclusion to attempt 1, you can see the de-lams pretty clear on it. Handle was thrown together just to finish the knife rather then throw away 3 days of work.

Jon to bad for the delams I like it thou good looking knife. You may want to get one of Dave Lisch's forges I have one of his 2 burners it does not froze the bottle or hose and I am getting 65-70 hours on a 100# propane bottle which is 3 times the amount of time I was getting with my single burner blown forge which would freeze my bottle in 3 hours.

Ray you can play we would love to have you in. can you find a spike you know they can be found near the RR tracks this thread has no end date all makers welcome. lets see them spike knives.

Dave, I didn't have to look no further than my gravel shop floor to find a spike. I'm thinking there may have been a train track running through there at one time. I lite up the forge and got a few licks on the spike but just didn't have it this morning. Its been years since I messed with any spikes and I forgot how stiff they were. I was expecting something much easier. It started to feel just like work. :D
