Have you ever had a bad experience with SOG? Let it be known.

I just had a bad experience with them and would hate for any of you out there to go through what I have. Is anyone considering buying a SOG? Beware of blade play -if you get one of their defective knives they will not replace it for you or even fix it.

I hate to open a thread like this, but seriously you guys, SOG lost a potential customer. I recieved a SOG Flash 2 a while back and had to send it in for up and down blade play as it came out of the box. The side to side blade play was not too bad since it could be fixed by tightening the pivot screw, but the up and down blade play was un-fixable. The blade would even make a clacking noise if you were to wave it around in the air and you could phisicaly see it wiggling (the locking mechanism was loose too and would also make noise on top of the blade clacking). I know that some Flash 2 owners have knives with no up and down blade play, so there is no excuse for them not to fix mine.

Bottom line is that they made a defective knife, sent it out to retailers who sold it to me, I sent it back to SOG and they will not fix or replace it. I am pissed. I doubt I can return the knife and my only option is to sell it used and loose money in the process.

If there was ever a thread to rant about a bad experience with SOG this is it. Let the people know as I have. If I read this thread before purchasing my Flash 2 I never would have considered it.

I guess if you can handle your knife on location before you buy it you will be okay, but never buy a SOG from the Internet, if it is defective you are stuck with it.

Obviously their fixed blades wont have this problem.

Well I'm not a huge fan. Their knives are overpriced. However I received a defective Super SOG Bowie, sent it in and it was repaired under warranty. I exchanged a couple emails with staff and was pleased with the communication.
Several years ago I bought my first SOG - the Gentleman. I gave it to a girlfriend who lost it. Years later I bought her another. Good knife.

Its not that I am mad that I got a defective knife, but they refuse to fix it. I dont know if their policies have changed, I know that many people have the flash2 with no up and down movemement at all.

Thanks for your reply AF

You aren't the first person to post on these forums about bad experience with SOG's customer service. I would avoid the company altogether.

Meh. I'm not thrilled with them.

I had a SOG Twitch II for less than a month before the spring broke.

It was fun while it lasted, but there was so much blade play side to side that I didn't feel all that happy using the knife.

After the spring broke, I exchanged it at Lowe's, where I bought it, and ended up just hocking the packaged version on eBay rather than keep a knife I wasn't 100% happy with.

Really decent fit and finish, but from what I've experienced and seen, quality control and manufacturing tolerances are not great.

I like a lot of their designs, but none of their products have that special "something" that makes me want to pull the trigger.
And the ones that I do like, are far too expensive.

Like this one.

I only have one SOG knife, a Government model from 1991. I doubt there's much could go wrong with that :D

What reason did they give for that?

They said there was not enough up and down blade play; that they dont consider it blade play unles the knife is completely disfunctional and the blade wont even work. Mine had plenty of up and down blade play, believe me, you could hear it rattle. I guess that SOG doesnt care about their folding knives having up and down blade play. They basicaly said deal with it.

That's completely unacceptable, and unconscionable on their part. Consider it a learning experience, and never buy another SOG. Poor quality, poor customer service and uncompetitive pricing is a recipe for failure. I have been aware of this for quite some time... I hope they clean up their act.

Thanks for posting those other threads "hillbillenigma" I found that guy Chris, form SOG. I emailed him and hopefully he will reply.

Yeah when I worked the knife bar at a store for a couple of years I never saw a SOG assisted folder with OUT blade play and that is one reason whiy I never bought one and have never liked their designs, for the same price I can get a Spyderco of much better quality.

Man, maybe I've been lucky, but I have a Twitch II and Twitch XL that both lock up like a vault and have very nice edges, easy to sharpen and hold an edge well. I also have had lots of their multitools and they seem like they are very well made, no problems there. It seems to me that many problems are associated with the Flash series, which always seemed kinda like the economy line with SOG. If I was SOG I would redesign them or discontinue them. I've never owned a Flash, but seems like that is the model most people are disappointed in when they complain about SOG. Conversely, I've never heard much bad about the whole Tomcat series other than it doesn't have a pocket clip.

I have a Flash in AUS8 and a Visionary II in VG10 and have no issues with either. I bought a Sog Vino wine opener a few years ago and the foil cutter can slip its lockbar when open. I don't use it much....
