Spine Whack Test

Probably. He'd probably be right, too. And so it goes.

To the OP - as you can see this issue has been - well lets say - "vigorously debated".

My opinion - I treat any knife that "folds" like a slipjoint - whether it has a lock or not. Therefore - I think the spine whack test reveals nothing for me.

If I need to go "grape ape" with a knife I defer to my fixed blades.

A folding knife is a mechanical device that can fail, period. Some are stronger than others - but at the end of the day they can all fail.

A knife can be replaced - the full use of my hand or fingers after they are severely cut cannot.
Agreed, I do the same thing. If it folds I treat it like a slip joint.
No, I don't absolutely think the spine whack test is the be all end all. However, any decent lock should be able to take it.

Yep.

My EK Model 5 survives the spine whack test everytime, hey isn't spine whackin' basically reverse batonnin'?

On the serious side spine whack is not a valid test of any kind.

In b4 the move or lock

I whack. Usually I whack at home. I have whacked outdoors before though.

No, it's stupid, don't do it.

A thread about the spine-whack test has now turned into a debate over the Tri-Ad lock. If that ends up turning into a fight about the merits of Cold Steel's marketing, we might end up with a new record for most dead horses beaten in a single thread. ;)

But what knife steel is the best for an under $30 folder for a scout that can be spine whacked? Is it ok if it's made in China?

What the hell ever happed to bladeforums spam rules. There are members who have posted 5+ times adding nothing to the conversation.

The topic clearly says SPINE WHACK TEST don't want to talk about it DON"T CLICK THE DAMN TOPIC

Is it really that god damn difficult? He didn't trick you into reading this thread, you chose to read, and respond with Stupid Pointless Annoying Messages. Wanna talk about popcorn and beer, whine and cheese is just around the corner.

I spine wack all my knives, I have no idea what it means or what it proves. But it makes me feel more confident that the lock is secure. I would not smack it against concrete or anything, but a few good taps against a piece of wood should be enough.

Thanks guys ,great fun . I was in a bad mood before reading this thread.:)
Bye I have to go and whack some,.......................................knives:)

Do you believe the "spine whack test" is a legitimate indicator of lock integrity? If your knife fails this test, do you feel it merits a warranty return?

It is my ever-so-humble opinion that spine whack tests conducted at home by the end-user are pointless. I like to think that the manufacturers already did their own tests in a more scientific and controlled environment before a knife is sent into full-production.

If you continuously smack a knife against something and apply increasing force each time the lock does not fail, you *will* eventually find the breaking point—it’s only a matter of time. So unless you have a lot of time and money to waste (and maybe a few fingers you feel are merely superfluous or decorative,) I would not recommend abusing your folders in such a way. Otherwise, fill yer boots…

I don't think that a manufacturer should have to bear the cost of such unnecessary abuse of their product.
