Spotless Tidioute/Northfield/Unxld

I see some patinas, faded etchings, and sharpened edges. I don't see any dinged blades, chipped handles, grinder marks, dents on the backspring from someone hammering it...

In which I was going to write, "Just follow along in Charlie's barlow thread!" :D

But kamagong beat me to it-- which is only fitting, as his is the post I was about to quote:

Here you go.

(Look for chipped handles in the thread as well, even if they didn't make the above cut.)

I use every knife I own. The 55 has a new tip profile now from use on the jobsite. These GE knives are great users, I dont leave home without one most days.

Broken/bent tip of 53 stockman coping blade

Miss this guy, great little knife

The 55 has seen a lot of use

Stripping wire the first day in my pocket

Sorry, got a little pic happy :D

And heres the broken tip

And here is the next victim :)

Already reprofiled in this pic and ready to go to work

Most of the pictures of my knives are taken when the knives were new.
Also, my preference for stainless steel takes the "patina factor" off the equation.
I own few knives, and carry them all. I don't use them hard, but I do use them, from an Opinel to a custom jackknife...and I try to keep them clean, sharp, and avoid doing stupid things with them.
Yes, I said "try" :D

I have a theory or a kind of motto if you will.
Were you a kid who got a new bike for Christmas and did you take it out for the first time and ride through every puddle or ride around every puddle?
All of us fall into one or other of these two groups.
Me? I'm in the second -If my dad hadn't given my bike away to his mates young son after I had left home started work and not used the bike for 6 years having mothballed it in a nice dark safe corner of the garage-I would still own it. That bike got used a lot but also was looked after.
Now that I'm able to afford them I definitely like to have knives in pristine condition that I know will not be used by me. Maybe somewhere down the track they will be passed down to my descendants hopefully. But by the burning beard of the fire god if they don't look after them I will rise from dead and mess their house up whilst they sleep.

As most here, I tend to take the pics when the knife is new. I had two Opinels arrive this morning and they've been photographed already...:D

Mind you, I do have quite a few knives which are regular users, but still remain in pretty good condition and relatively unmarked, as I do try to look after them to a point. For example, when I get home my carry knife for that day will get a quick clean and wipe over with some oil.

I do have a mate however, who has maybe 15 knives and only 5 of them get used. He doesn't want to mark the others! I actually itch to use my knives and do so at any opportunity - I can't stand just seeing them sit there and do nothing.

I'm with you on the bike issue Meako, I'm 53 and still have my first two wheeled bike, a Schwinn sting ray (I got it in 1966 or 1967).......Here it is, (needs restoration!)

Ha! I had the same Schwinn, (50 here) but it was a dark metallic flake green with a white vinyl banana seat! Lol handle bars weren't that high though. Oh and I carried my Cub Scout knife while riding it of course! :)

At the moment, I have two safe/shelf queens. One is a damascus Vic Pioneer, and the other is a Northfield SFO 85 EO Linerlock. If neither of them get used in the not too distant future, then I will end up selling them.

I don't usually keep shelf queens, but if I do keep a shelf queen, it's actually a duplicate or a back-up knife to a limited knife that I use. If the user gets lost or breaks, I have another one of the same knife (new and ready for use). This would only apply to a knife that I would consider a grail knife, and only if it is a limited knife that will be hard to get once sold out.

You are correct the 2nd cut stag next to the peanut is a #26 Sleeveboard with wharncliffe and a coping blade, wish it were a pen blade, but the knife is a little tank, the other with green bone scales is a #62 courthouse whittler, with wharncliffe, pen, and coping blades, one if my favorites.

GEC caters to both the user and the collector.
Best of both worlds...a knife that can take a beating and look good doing it.
I don't understand the "safe queen" thing but whatever floats your boat.
I own a few dozen GEC's and each one gets carried and used. I think they look MUCH better with a nice, rich patina that shows scratches and dings. Reveals actual character.
It reminds me of the old beaters that have been passed down to me. If only used knives could talk :)

On the other hand...

Hey -nice steed clutchcarter-looking at those tyres you are almost ready to swap the saddle out to a standard bike saddle whack on some flat bar handle bars and BOOM we invented the BMX.
