Off Topic Springtime is lovely for a stroll in the snark

I was fever free yesterday, but stayed in and rested for the most part. Today I was back outside cleaning up deconstruction debris and working on the raised walkway around the house until I ran out of lumber.
All I have left is the stairs, some trim work, and another gate. Then I can clean up one last time before mowing.

Glad to hear your feeling better

All I can say is that gout sucks. Both big toes. Walking hurts like a sumbitch. The dog stepping on a toe REALLY hurts.

When the doc hands you a list of "24 things not to eat when you have gout" to eliminate from your diet and you tell him that you have already eliminated 22 of the 24 and that 1 of the 2 are 80% out of your diet already, you don't expect to hear the doctor say "Ha Ha, you're screwed. Well, we have some pills that MAY help."

D'oh.
Maybe it's the other two things, and you can add the 22 back??

I just read that whiskey is better for gout than all the other alcohols. Dissolves uric acid crystals, apparently. Beer is the worst.
Because you know, medicinal whiskey.

I fought with gout for years I haven't had much problems since I got on allopurinol . Usually you will have 1 or 2 foods that will trigger an attack . It will be one of your favorite foods mine was fried chicken livers . Take care of it, when they operated on my foot last winter to remove a bunion I was told that gout had made it worse

I started the allopurinol last Monday and there doesn't seem to be any improvement yet. Soaking my foot in epsome salts and hot water, using rice hot packs, popping anti-inflamatories, keeping it elevated when not in use, etc.....

The only 2 items on the list that I still consume are high fructose corn syrup as it seems to bee in everything, and wild game. Never liked beer, so it was removed from the list 40 years ago. Red wine and mead are my alcoholic drinks of choice, but I only have 1 or 2 drinks per month, so my intake is already way below the recommended maximums.

The only thing I regularly consume that has high fructose corn syrup in is ketchup. I've eliminated virtually all other items with HFCS. I'm down to 1 or 2 Dr Peppers a week and ketchup.

The only wild game I eat is venison. No hog, javelina, ducks, pheasant, quail. I believe that my cholesterol levels are so good because of shifting to the leaner venison over store bought red meat. Last cholesterol readings was 183 total and all versions (LDL, HDL, Triglycerides) were well within the "good" limits. My doctor said I was in pretty good shape for an old, fat bald guy. He said I needed to work on that. I said "I can mayb fix the "fat" part, but the "old and bald" are permanent.

I've even cut out hamburgers from Whataburger. I've substituted the grilled chicken sandwich for the burger.

As far as alcohol goes, everything I've read says that all alcohol is bad, but that beer is the worst and wine the least bad. Kinda like do you want to be shot with a 45 or a 22.

Allopurinol doesn't help relieve it , it keeps you from future outbreaks. Just because it isn't on the list doesn't mean something isn't your trigger. We're mushrooms on your list ? To many of those would trigger me

Yeah. Sugars are all the awfulness, especially if unbuffered by fiber or healthy fats. Dietary fat doesn't produce corporeal fat very easily (unless you eat a LOT). Sugar does, even in moderate amounts. Though bad varieties of dietary fat can promote inflammation. Grass-fed meat and dairy if you can get it to keep the Omega-3 ratio on the safe side.

re: your doctor
How did he suggest you solve the old condition? 😜

When I was a kid growing up I remember my dad being in severe pain from gout.... Lasted many Years.
Idk what he takes now, but for the last 20 years or so he said the meds make it almost nonexistent......

I'm really surprised I haven't got it yet? Every little twitch i think it's coming....ha

Hope you get it worked out.

ask your doctor about tart cherry extracts - a couple guys i know swear by them, but you don't want to introduce something that will compete with any other meds you may be taking.

It's hereditary, so, yeah, you may come down with it at any time, or you may never develop it.

You can delay it by eliminating the purine-rich foods from your diet, but according to what I have read, eliminating the foods from your diet AFTER you develop it won't help.

I just happened to already have eliminated most of the items on the list because I didn't like, or for other "health" reasons, e.g., liver and stuff. Who knows, that may have delayed my gout a few years or may not have delayed a thing.

After I was diagnosed with it, my mother "surprised" me with the announcement that my maternal grandfather had gout for several years and I never knew about it.

Since I look so much like him that, even though he has been dead since 1969, I have been called by his name by old-timers who knew him, it shouldn't surprise me that I got the gout. I mean I've already become the short, fat bald man he was, survived the cancer he didn't survive and been called his name on numerous occassions.

Wife put my name in for a $100 gift certificate drawing at the antique store, and I won, haha. Problem is, I never really see anything I want there. Small store. If they let me, I'll just give it to her.

If they won't, just go with her, let her browse around and pick out what she wants and boom, you pay for it with free money.

Who knows, maybe the day you go in, they'll have a Blackjack BK4 on the clearance table for $10.

I normally don't spend a heap at the antique stores. If I buy something, it's because it was cheap, haha. Maybe I'll come across something nice I normally wouldn't spend the money for. Thinking about heading there tomorrow.

I love this thing. I plan to camp a couple of nights this weekend again. Should knock the rust off after a bit of use in some rougher materials. I love to use this as a camp cook knife, so it gets put away wet more than I should allow.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads! On a side note, I just came across actual fake BK2s on Fleabay!! The listing says they are D2 and it looks like you can get the coated black version or uncoated. It has the KABAR BK&T Olean NY logos and the BK2 Logo as well. I can send mods the url. I will link pics.

link link or it didn't happen :D

Pls feel free to take the link then delete if needed. I know we aren't supposed to post links.
