CanDo, I don't know what to suggest except that I found it effective to pull out the round piece of felt and soak the wadding directly the first time I filled it. Because it's sealed you could also put a little extra fluid in the bottom of the capsule.

Two things to note about these: first off, don't use Ronson flints. They have a red lacquer on them which makes the diameter too big. It might gum up the striker wheel as well. Secondly, the installed flint doesn't last very long. Neither of these really matter because every lighter ships with a cartridge of Zippo-brand flints(6?) and a spare O-ring.

I bought 4 of them. Love em. Carry one every day.

I can't however, get it to light on its own, and until I figure out why not

A couple of things to try: extend the wick out to between 3/16" - 1/4", put another flint in the flint tube.

I flatten the wick with the small pliers I use to extend the wick so a "wall" of wick faces the spark shower.

I really enjoy seeing lots of sparks shoot out of the lighter so two flints are my usual minimum. This uses flints more quickly, makes the 2nd flint harder to load into the pipe and makes flicking the striker wheel slightly more difficult.

If you flick the striker wheel right after you've loaded a fluid lighter with lots of fluid you can get some flint embedding in the striker wheel which doesn't help. Try waiting until excess lighter fluid evaporates before striking the wheel.

If you like, ping me with your mailing address and I will send a replacement insert & flints to you.

All the best,

oregon

I've tried the suggestions, and can't quite figure this out. Thank you very much for the offer, Oregon, but I must decline.
