I don’t really understand, did more of these get reposted later 5 hours after the first drop?

What kind of ridiculous retailer would make everyone show up at a certain time, and then turn away customers by pretending they were out of stock, and then fulfill orders 5 hours later for people who did not follow their instructions to show up at 1 pm CST?

I think this is a terrible business practice and I do not intend to order anything from this retailer again (I have purchased “standard” items from them before). What an obnoxious waste of my time, St. Nicks has lost me as a customer, goodbye.

What are you talking about ?How do you know SNK reposted this model 5 hours later?

There were probably cancellations from the initial drop. The same thing used to happen every now and then with Northwoods drops -they’d sell out in minutes, then a few would pop up in stock during the following hours.

I too missed the first attempt at an order which irritated me to no extent because I was "ready". I figured I'd refresh the screen for 5-10 minutes in case someone's order got cancelled or something. I saw 1 come back into stock and jumped on it but nope, out of stock. This happened several more times over the next 30 minutes and eventually I was able to be quick (and lucky) enough to make it through the checkout.

I run a website for my company so I have experience with Shopify, the same e-com platform they use. Shopify flags orders with suspected fraud, low/med/high. You have to go through those individually and determine if you think it's fraud or not. If you think it is, you cancel the order which puts the product back into stock. If this is the case, it would explain why there were 1-2 units back into stock periodically, as they were processing through the orders.

I've missed a couple of drops that I wanted so after my experience yesterday, I'd recommend refreshing the product page for 30+ minutes after and see if they cancel any orders and the product becomes available.

I registered an account today to post this, because I wanted to share the knowledge I had about shopify and what I think was happening.

ApexPilot ApexPilot thank you for that info.

I don’t collect Spydercos, and I really don’t care that I didn’t get a PM2 4V.

I have also lost out on many knife drops, no big deal.

But that experience was very negative for me, maybe the Wuhan flu is getting to me.

E Elgatodeacero happy to offer some additional info, in case it can help.

I recently got interested in knives and since I don't have many yet, I kinda dig the unique Spyderco sprints. The red and black color scheme is what pulled me in for this one.

It's not just you, I totally agree with the less than positive experience! I wish they (and others) could come up with a better way to release these, so the odds are more even and not just luck of the click and speed of the connection. That being said though, it is nice to have the opportunity to get something rare. So at the end of the day, if I get one I'm happy, if not I hate the process. :)

Wut

A year or two ago, or whenever this order was placed by St Nick's, and LOTS of money was paid, there really was no market data to indicate what kind of demand there was for CPM-4V steel in a production folder.

They must have seen the potential and they brought 4V to us in several models. There's still a Para3 LW version coming at some point.

They've been pretty clear about everything with regard to quantities available and when they can be purchased.

St Nick's website held up relatively well, but demand exceeded supply, and some people are frustrated. Compared to other dealers who's websites crash, or they fail to set quantity limits, I think St Nicks did good.

With some of these knife dealers, we're talking about small businesses in a lot of cases. Websites cost money and inventory costs money. Technology fails all of us at times and money is always finite. On St Nick's website it shows their stock quantities, they just maintain a few of each model. They're not a huge company.

With 4V from St Nick's, they did the Para3, Shaman, Lil Native, Manix2, PM2, and upcoming Para3 LW... so we're talking about something like 3000+ knives total? That's hundreds of thousands of dollars at dealer cost.

So what happens if these didn't sell?

These started rolling out in 2019 and back then most people didnt know what CPM-4V was, didn't understand it, and some people thought it wasn't a good fit for a folder. People seemed to think it was analogous with 3V and best on fixed blades.

Ordering 3000 expensive pocket knives in a non-stainless steel that has not been established or tested in the market, takes guts, and probably some confidence in what 4V is capable of in terms of performance.

I'll admit, its easy for me to be happy with St Nick's. I got the 4V Manix 2 and now the PM2 is on it's way. That's also why I'm taking the time to type all of this.

If St Nick's had not rolled the dice on 4V, then none of us probably would have had the opportunity to purchase it. For that I'm thankful and it's why I'm defending them.

They did a good job.

With all of that said, had I not succeeded in purchasing 4V from them, I'd definitely be calling and emailing to urge them to re-order more ASAP!

I'm not a metallurgy expert, however I believe CPM-4V to be superior to CPM-M4 for both edge retention and overall durability. For that reason, I also believe that the market will support a large quantity of this steel in folders.

sharp_edge sharp_edge it seems like that is what RamZar’s post #382 in this thread at 6:06 pm my local time indicates.

That post of mine is standard for this thread after an item is finally delivered to dealers and in post #1 the item moves from the Upcoming list to the Delivered list with a Month & Year delivered stamp.

What does it really matter, folks? These sprints might be somewhat limited but they aren't numbered. If "1,200" sell out in under a minute, a retailer and easily sell several hundred more in seconds. If Spyderco wants to limit them then they should number them. If they don't want to number them then buyers should assume that there are sometimes way more available than people think, which there sometimes are. Is what it is.
