I've had a 204 for about a year and a half, and there is no better sharpener out there. Sure, I ahve coarse sandpaper for rough profiling, and really fine paper (1000 grit) for finishing, but nothing beats the 204 for quick and easy maintenance.
The 204 is my default no-scratch sharpener, as it's nearly impossible for me to scratch a blade using it. D2, 1095, ATS-34, it doesn't matter, 204 beats all. Running through the steps, then kissing it with 1000 grit and a strop results in an edge that both shaves hair and zips through rope and cardboard equally well.

and see if there are possibilities. You might even be able to talk him or Spyderco through him into doing a new passaround if the old passaround Sharpmaker isn't available anymore.
