Thought you might be interested in this information from Spyderco. (Sorry if this has already been posted.)

"We wanted to make everyone aware we are implementing a change for 2016 that you should hear directly from us. Spyderco will be implementing a Minimum Advertised Pricing (MAP) Policy with our retailers that will go into effect January 1, 2016."

Ill wait and see the end results, before i pass judgement.

If it is true, and works like Benchmade, I'm glad I have my favorite Spydercos because, like Benchmade, I won't be buying any more. :( :thumbdn:

When every manufacturer goes with MAP pricing, what will you do then?

^still buy, but the incentive to reach for the wallet and make impulse purchases will decline by a huge amount

With MAP at 40% off MSRP it's hardly a Benchmade situation.

This.

When i see an advertisement for an unbeatably good price, i feel more compelled to buy than when a website says "We have good prices! Come to our website, log in, and then go browse to see them"

It's less fun to hunt for a new knife when you know that the price is the same everywhere. I don't buy Spyderco much anymore anyway, but I'll be much less inclined to impulse purchase.

True. But leveling the playing field by instituting MAP pricing policies effectively destroys competition among dealers unless they can find ways to work around those policies. After all, all other things being equal, what difference does it make who you buy from if everybody's price is the same?

The majority of dealers aren't taking quite that steep of a discount anyhow, so I don't see it upsetting the apple cart in the same way it has with some other companies. With this system in place I think they'll be striking a good balance between all of their various stakeholders, customers included.

I think Benchmade's MAP is 15% off MSRP.
right?

Regarding Spyderco's foray into MAP:
Most online sellers are already at, or around 40% off MSRP so it shouldn't make too much difference. However, Spyderco has jacked up the prices on their new releases recently (a $100 jump for G10 over FRN on the ZDP Stretch?!? How stupid do they think we are?). So I think this new policy will affect those more so than the established models.

We shall see.

This isn't looking good so far, but I guess we'll wait and see. There's a reason I haven't bought any more Benchmades in the past year or so, and Spydercos are already overpriced.

Honestly, I think Golden made Spydies are among the best values in the knife industry. Unfortunately, things are very competitive right now and even a fairly small price increase could change that, particularly with Cold Steel venturing into higher end materials and companies like Kizer moving up the ladder. I love my Spydies and I'm certainly not going to boycott them by any means, but I can tell you know I'll be much, much more selective about which models I pick up.

Well, I only really have three Spydercos on my want list, so this won't affect me much.

MAP makes sense to me. I no longer sell knives because the payoff is not worth the inventory investment.

As always, only buy the knives you want for the price they're being sold for.
Simple as that.

Save your stress for things that matter.
