Spyderco Custom Shop - Ideas and Discussion.

I suspect that a custom shop would probably be something like this. A selection of standard models, most likely Golden made models, with a limited selection of handle materials and limited selection of blade steels. You pick and choose the combination that you want. It could possibly be expanded to non-production blade shapes like the tanto on select platforms.

You could get a model you like with an alternative blade steel and handle material to suit your fancy.

Just my thought on the matter.

Spyderco is THE company where a custom shop just makes plain sense. And the exposure to so many steels keeps it very exciting. But, now is not the time to take a gamble with a new service offering. Maybe in two years when things are “normal.”

Turbulent economic times can be the best time to make gains on market share, especially when consumer demand is strong, like it currently is.

Consider the Copper PM2 in REX-45 that was just announced by Blade HQ. This is not just a new handle scale, this is a whole new way to build a PM2 and it sounds like it was not easy to figure out. This is customization to the max, and at a scale where it makes financial sense to attempt such a thing.

I'm stuck on this new PM2. Now that Spyderco is over the R&D hump, how hard would it be to use a different metal?

There's definitely a strong market for metals like Copper and also Brass, but arguably there's a larger market for titanium.

...and then all of a sudden direct comparisons will be made of a PM2 and $500 titanium frame lock knives.

This new platform may be ripe for custom shop options as well as dealer exclusives simultaneously. It could also be a pathfinder into much higher price point and margin options for the Golden Co linup.

I'm just throwing out ideas as they come.

The copper PM2 drops in 15 mins!!!

Copper stinks and a 7+ oz PM2 is a brick so it is a hard pass for me. On the topic of this thread, a custom shop ti PM2 sounds attractive to me but then again, it all depends on the price (I'm willing to pay up to $260 if the steel is in the league of M390/20cv and better).

I ordered one!

I also dont enjoy the musty smell that copper and other metals can produce. It's a chemical reaction between the copper and the oils and things from your skin. If you remove the oil, you'll remove the smell. Rubbing alcohol or even hand sanitizer might work. We'll see.

The irony is that copper is naturally antiviral and anti microbial. Considering the current pandemic, it's an interesting point.

For me, I dont anticipate the weight being an issue. I have light knives for when I need them. Some of them are too light.

I suspect with the metal handle, it will be nice and smooth in and out of the pocket.

I've been using REX-45 in three other Spyderco knives and without a doubt, its performance is superior to M390/20CV.

If looks didn't matter, why even do the peel-ply carbon fiber?
"
Sorry to nit-pick. Carbon fiber has higher friction than fiberglass, particularly when wet. If you’re after the better texture and grip, all you need is peel ply. It’s not just for looks. I appreciate getting the texture of carbon fiber without the cost. But others are insulted by the cost savings. It’s a preference thing.
