Spyderco factory production?

I'd like to hear from blade forum members regarding Spyderco knife production. Their most two popular knives, Paramilitary2 and Native 5 G-10 have been backordered for months. According to one Spyderco vendor, they said the company was in the midst being upgraded and remodeled to handle the public demand. Last I heard, it is a family company with ONLY 38 employees.
My point? Spyderco has BECOME TOO BIG FOR ITS BRITCHES? May I suggest Sal and Gail Gasser, get with the program?
Anyone care to answer?

According to your comments wouldn't they be "get(ting) with the program" by upgrading? They make a good quality product that has a higher demand. Demand is most likely what is causing the issue and they are working to address that by supplying what they can - it isnt their fault.... Well i guess it is their fault that they supply a high quality product with an equally high demand, LOL.

There are a great number of makers that would not be with the "program" with this line of thought. Be patient and you will be able to snag one, I am sure spyderco is working on their production issues, these are the things a small business does as it grows.

screw upgrading, they need to just lower product quality lol that will get the high demand in check :p I tried to type that with a straight face and just couldn't do it :)

Well, if your vendor is correct they are getting with the program aren't they.

FWIW, I've never had a problem finding Para 2's, or any other Spyderco I want. Not saying its always easy, but they can be found.
Welcome to BF. The longer you've been here you'll find it will help with getting the knives you want. Good luck.

I bought the exact Para 2 I was looking for about a month ago. Just have to keep your eyes open and look in the right places.

When faced with very high demand easy alternatives are lowering quality or raising prices, I'm glad Spyderco is not going either route. Expanding production (and therefore costs) is a huge risk, what if the increased demand doesn't last? I wish them well they make great products.

My only comment to you is that you seem to have some sort of chip on your shoulder, are extremely and painfully rude, and have what I would call entitlement issues. All this aside from being grossly misinformed.

I suggest you try to start a knife company, and if successful and find yourself luckily in the position of being in demand, try to grow RESPONSIBLY, and not go bankrupt in two years when it slows down. Then when your ignorance of how to run a knife production company is gone, give us some insight;) It has got to be so much more complicated then you realize, or could even imagine, and I think the Glesser's know what they are donig, they have been around a bit.

I wish this would get moved to Whine & Cheese so people could tell you how they really feel about your post.

I wish the guy would stop complaining about my favorite knife company. I've had maybe fifty of them. I've used their customer service once, and that was just to center a blade on a new knife. No charge; quick turn-around. There is NO better knife company, in MY opinion.

38 employees is a pretty good number if you consider a lot of the process is automated.

Knife people known the Spyderco name. The general public, doesn't. You can ask some random stranger, "what's Smith & Wesson?" And I would bet money more people know they make guns than those who don't know. But, if you ask the general population, "Who is Spyderco?" They're not going to know.

I find it funny when non-business owners tell business owners how they should be running their business.

I feel Spyderco is doing a pretty good job keeping with production. They have been around a very long time and have a good amount of different products. They work with several different makers to perfect their image. So when one of their knives becomes so desirable that it sells out in a matter of an hour means they are doing bad, then your right they totally suck. Good luck with your future rants, maybe try Benchmade next?

Well first off... Spyderco might have only 38 Golden Colorado employees, but only a percentage of the knives that they sell are produced in Golden. MANY of their knives are made elsewhere. Japan, Taiwan, China, Italy. They also produce a WIDE array of different knives, and a factory only has so much capacity. It seems to me to be a testament to the company that the production runs of the Para 2 go quickly. The company is probably the best in the business in being connected to the knife community and forum members on a one to one basis. Sal Glesser (Not Gasser) the owner of the company talks to users on this forum new and old alike on almost a daily basis. How many other CEO's of companies do THAT? I think that MOST Spyderco enthusiasts would like to see higher production levels on the Para 2, but I also really appreciate the wide range of different knives that also need production run time.
