Spyderco for Girlfriend

If only I could find a Dodo under for a decent price! The squeak is a pretty nice looking knife, and I'll have to check it out. What's the blade steel?

I was thinking about it, but I live in MI, so the knife laws are a little confusing... You can't carry a knife with a blade over three inches with unlawful intent. So I don't want her getting in any trouble because of the longer blade. I carry a PM2, but I don't think she'd be comfortable carrying a knife that big.

I also live in MI. The only knives you cannot carry here are fixed blades and autos. Like you said, "unlawful intent". I've never carried a blade of any length with unlawful intent. I have 2 Manix 2's and carry them frequently. I can understand your reservation, but honestly I think she would be fine. The Manix 2 LW is only 3 oz, so just a little heavier than a Delica. I could understand a woman not wanting to carry it because of its size though.

Dragon Fly, Delica, and Sage would be my next three choices. If she has to have blue, only the Delica is offered in that color of those 3. You might be able to find an older Sage 3 with blue G10 though.

  • Chaparral 1, 2 or 3
  • Sage 3 or 4
  • Caly 3

Out of those, for smaller hands and great slicing ability I'd go with Chaparral.

I know you can legally carry a folder over 3 inches, but everyone I talk to thinks it's a 3 inch blade limit. I agree though, the lightweight Manix is a great knife. She doesn't have to have a blue knife, but it's just her favorite color.

Have you ever been stopped by the police while carrying a larger folder?

No, but I did take a basic course in edge weapons taught by a police officer. He reiterated that the 3" limit is a common misconception and that as long as it isn't being used criminally it is perfectly legal.

Is it not illegal to use a 2.5" blade "criminally" there?? Lol, who writes these laws?!

I think the reason for the law being in place is so criminals have additional charges after they commit a crime. For example, someone could get arrested for robbing a store with a firearm, and if they are in possession of a folder with a >3 blade there are additional charges for having a "deadly weapon". I could be wrong, but that's what I've always though.

What about the Centofante 3/4 folders? Fairly classy, good slicers and not too expensive. Caly 3 might also be an option if you can still find one in VG-10. If not the Caly 3.5 isn't much bigger.

Scratch that. It's a liner lock.

If you want to start out slow and easy, I recommend an orange Pingo slipjoint. Very sexy little knife that will not scare her, or her friends. Color is very cool, too.

Out of all the knives I showed her, she likes the Sage 4 the best. That's definitely a good looking knife. I heard the wood can crack while switching the clip though... Does anyone know if that's common?

If she likes wood, maybe a GEC traditional? The Tidioute #47 Viper comes in a nice osage orange. Curvy, too.

Chaparral in carbon fiber, not colorful but it is carbon fiber, Domino, you can get a colorful aftermarket handle for it. Being a lefty myself, the Spyderco's are lefty friendly in most all models.

I agree, great knife.
