Spyderco guys... please help me choose midsize model

If you're looking bang for your buck on a great EDC my top two recommendations would be SAGE1 and SAGE1. Carbon fiber, S30V steel, great ergonomics. Can be found for around $86 delivered.

i personally love the native. it just seems like a very rugged knife. but on the other hand the mili is great too. so either one would be a great choice imo

Many thanks, guys, for your comments.

Tenacious inbound to me soon! Sure looking forward to my first Spyderco and I have no doubt that the Tenacious will PLEASE! $38 including shipping and I just could not resist this choice.

I think my second will be the Sage 1. What a very cool knife.

Anyway, sure do appreciate this forum and your comments!

The Sage is beautifully done, but I have beaten the snot out of my Native and she just continues to sing. You will never go wrong with a Native.

This is the second comment in this thread indicating that the Sage may not be as durable as some of the other Spydie models. I'd like to learn more about this.

What is it about the Sage that makes it less durable?

And what makes the Native more durable?

I have no clue about this.

I don't own a Tenacious but from the great reviews it has been garnering and the amazing pricepoint I'm sure you will not be disappointed. Congratulations on your 1st Spyderco. I'm sure there'll be more to come in the future... *Cue evil laughter* :D

I would be curious about the sage comments as well because the titanium is a pretty hefty ti frame lock and seems plenty strong to me and I would think stronger than a delica.

I suggest th flat ground blue manix 2. It is limited run so hurry.
The caly 3 is awesome
And the stretch would be my third pick.

I like zdp and would choose that steel when available but can be hard to sharpen if you don't know how. But it gets super sharp and holds it for awhile.

I have a G10 Endura. IMO, it's a bit big for office EDC, but I've been experimenting with the E4 for afterwork/weekend carry. For the office, I EDC a Caly 3, which is a bit shorter than I prefer for food prep, but it's easy to carry and offers a low profile.

The E4 is a more substantial knife, but it's reasonably light (4.4 oz), and it's flat (0.418"), so it carries well inside the waistband of jeans, which frees up a pocket, and I don't know it's there until I need it. Of course, it works well clipped in a pocket, but I don't like to carry more than one item in a pocket, so free pockets are scarce. It find that it's comfortable carried loose in a back pocket, but uncomfortable carried loose in a front pocket.

I dont know why people think the sage II is less durable than any other spyderco. Ti, while not being very hard, is very tough for its weight and that knife should last you a very long time. Eventually the lockup will have to be adjusted, but that's life. The sage I is a walker liner lock, some people have an adamant hatred of that lock. Well Ive seen backlocks fold on people and liner locks fold on people so you just have to remember that you arent dealing with a toy but a tool and there is always the possibility of injury regardless of how careful you are.

I would add that the quality coming out of Taiwan is very high. I just got a Gayle Bradley and it's a lot nicer than either my military or paramilitary. Well worth what I spent on it, in fact this is the first knife I have ever gotten that I feel really falls into "this knife is worth more than what I paid for it" that gets throw around endlessly.

If you can handle a 5.5oz knife I recommend the bradley, if that is too heavy I would still recommend the military.

The Sage II is a little "light duty" for my tastes. It would do fine for EDC, but its more of a gentleman's folder in my book.

The Endura and Delica rock. Tenacious too. See nutnfancy's reviews of these knives on youtube.

."

Have you ever handled a Sage 2? I have had 2 Delicas and they seem and feel delicate( and cheap)compared to the Sage. Plastic FRN handle of the Delica vs Titanium slabs on the Sage. Not too mention the sage is much larger than the Delica. The F&F of the two are worlds apart with the Sage being a winner by a long shot. The Sage 2 is one of the highest quality knives on the market and it beats the Delica,Endura and Tenacious in quality, materials, strength and workmanship. Those other knives mentioned are good but they're no Sage2.

I'm not sure any Ti framelock (save the BM760) can be considered light duty?

Sage II looks pretty tough to me...

I suggest hopping on the blue manix 2 sprint run, with the milled out liners the knife comes in at a cool ~4oz...

Isn't the Walker liner lock used on most all of the Spydercos except the few lock back and frame lock models?

Is there a difference between a "liner lock" and a "walker liner lock"?

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the Sage is any less well built, only that the Native, dollar for dollar, is one of the best values in a Spyderco. I like my Sage very much and I have no problem at all recommending it.

there is no difference, Spyderco just gives credit to the inventor, which is a great thing to do IMO. i have handled a sage 1 and i dont think you would be more than happy with it, the lock is unquestionably strong.

Thanks again for all the comments. To update, I have ordered both the Tenacious and the Sage 1. Finding the Sage 1 on eBay for $79 was all it took for me to bite. Seemed like a very good price for a highly rated knife. So... thanks again! Next week will be fun.

you made some nice choices, the sage 1 is a fine blade. as is the tenacious for the price,

Sage 2 definitely, I love mine and by no means is it a "light duty" knife. It's made from solid Titanium! How is a Titanium frame lock "light duty"?

Knife is Gorgeous and performs!

Para would be my second choice.

Own the Sage 1 as well, beautiful.

Zippo... since you have both the Sage 1 and the Sage 2, what are your thoughts on them... vs. each other? Do you have a preference and why?

(I shouldn't have asked, I suppose, as now I can envision a Sage 2 coming down the tracks before too long, dang it!) ;)

I'd opt for the Manix 2 in your case. You can beat it to hell and not ever have to worry. I've never been a fan of lockbacks.

hah ok run down time.

Both have great ergos, both same awesome blade/steel, when it comes down to it, it's CF with liner lock or the strength and simplicity of a Ti frame lock.

For me Sage 2 Ti a bit more than the Sage 1. Why? Although not necessary the extra reassurance of a Frame Lock is nice. I feel the simplicity of a Ti Frame Lock with complete flow through construction is classy. A tiny bit thinner than the Sage 1. I like the overall appearance of the Sage 2 better than the Sage 1. When holding both the Sages' in hand I gravitate towards the smooth Ti slabs.

Both are superior knives, but hands down would go Sage 2 over Sage 1 basically due to visual aesthetics and extra [not necessary] reassurance in a Ti Frame Lock. Middle Class Sebenza? By no means a "cheap" knife, neither over the top.
