Spyderco H1 Steel versus VG-10

I've carried a Salt 1 SE for about 5 years now. I work as landscape contractor and use it hard. The pinned hinged is as tight as the day I got. The SE blade has been sharpened a time or two. The blade finish is dull and ugly but the dang thing is work horse.

That and they make my wife look hot.

I have used some Gerber knives in 440C in both freshwater and saltwater with no rust. I recently got some knives in VG10 for fishing, but haven't used them yet. I wanted better edge retention than I had with the 440C, and expect to get that with the VG10.
I wouldn't worry about VG10 and saltwater, let alone freshwater.

I don't think it is as much the brief exposer to salt water or any other water that makes the H1 salts practical. But the ability to withstand long term wet or humid conditions.

"Long term" exposure really isn't a concern for me, since I live hundreds of miles from the coast. We have muggy days, but nothing VG-10 shouldn't handle well. I still want a serrated H1 steel blade, however, just because of the H1 steel hardness on SE blades.

I regularly carry my S30V Native IWB for jogging and biking, of course it typically gets a nice hot-water rinse directly after but I've never noticed any rust. My Delica4 is my EDC, front pants pocket and it has also been running/biking as well as rainy camping, boating and conoeing. Never swimming on purpose but its seen plenty of water as well as sweat. I would be comfortable using either knife around water all day long, even salt water, assuming you can give them a daily rinse with fresh water.

Ironically, I carry H1 at work despite almost zero water or sweat contact. :-p
