Spyderco knives are really ugly

Truth, like art, is in the eye of the beholder. Those who dislike Spydies for whatever reason(s) can believe what they wish. I'd rather believe what I know and that is Spydercos are a fine execution of design, form, and function. Until one actually uses one, that evasive truth is lost.

Yeah got that.
Now THAT'S how Spyderco handles should be like.
Not this G10, Kydex stuff

No one makes knife handles out of kydex. And in a previous post you mentioned you have never even held a Spyderco knife. Maybe you should read more and post less until you learn some more. Repeatedly trashing a knife company that you have never seen in person is very trollish behaviour.

Considering G10 is one of the most popular handle materials right now there must not be many knives you do like. In fact I would be curious to know what you consider a good knife. And one that isn't a SanRenMu which is most likely a cheap copy of another brands design and intellect. Just curious what is out there that is so much better, and that you hopefully own so you can give your personal thoughts on why it is so much better.

Please point me to the post were I wrote Spyderco wasn't good or other brands are better.
All I wrote was I don't like the brand because they are ugly and I think overpriced.
The reason for this is made in US and more fancy steel. I don't care for neither.

Spyderco look like workhorse knives to me, I prefer knives which are more aesthetically pleasing.

Some folders which I own and would recommend, since you asked;
Böker Trance
CRKT Drifter
Xikar Explorer
All Victorinox ALOX models.

These knives don't have super steels but have a certain something in the design I like.
Plus are damn good knives with good fit and finish, solid no play lock up and no cheap looking handles. Even the Zytel/FRN? on the Böker looks great.
Plus are super affordable, what's not to like?

For me, the hole is the reason I initially got interested in Spydies. There's a ton of knives that look good to me, but the thumb stud placement can be a problem. I have big hands & it's hard for me to actuate thumb studs on certain knives.

Not everyone has bony fingers, LOL. I know it can be done, even with big fingers, but the Spydie hole is MUCH easier for me to use. Also, as far as a general statement, Spyderco does a better job with blade play, blade centering, & out of the box sharpness than any manufacturer I've seen (for the money).

They're my favorite, but I do like other knives.

Aesthetics is very subjective. I, for one, prefer classical designs more than contemporary ones. It was because of this that at first I disliked Spyderco knives, but when I purchased one I realized that its function and ergonomics seemed to have been held in higher regard than how it looked during the design process. Of course I maybe wrong as I am not an authority when it comes to Spyderco knives, but cleary I use my Delica more than any other knife I own just for its ease of use. From carrying, opening, holding, using, closing and then re-placing it to my pocket feels 2nd nature.
So yeah to put it bluntly, to me they maybe ugly but I love them to death.

They're not overpriced, unless you're always paying MSRP then maybe expensive, but not overpriced. And only a handfull of them are made in USA, most in Japan, the rest in Taiwan and China. And they have the be the highest quality Asian produced knives I've ever seen, by a LARGE margin. And you don't have to buy ZDP189 steel models. In most cases you get VG-10 or S30V for no extra cost and those are GREAT steels. Plus they offer H1 that doesn't rust and in serrated edge is AMAZING!

Have you handled any Spyderco model? They're much better in hand than in pictures. When you start using them they REALLY start to make sense. Try being a little more open minded. And by the way there are very good reasons why G-10 is the most popular material. It's very light, strong, impervious to most chemicals, doesn't get hot or cold, won't expand or contract, doesn't crack, and it's grippy. FUNCTION.

No, he claims he hasn't ever handled one. He's pretty much a waste of time and electrons. He sounds like a very inexperienced kid who thinks he knows everything. How else could he judge a brand of knives knowing nothing about them.

I have a feeling he's saying overpriced based on MSRP. Someone else mentioned this before. The Kid should peruse a spydie dealer and see what streat price is. He'll be surprised. A delica with great steel and skeletonized liners can be had for around $50.

He's used to paying between $20 and $30 for these knives. Probably less, to be honest. With respect to Chad, none of these knives come close to a base line VG10 Spyderco in performance. They are more in the byrd class, though I'd rather have the Byrd than the CRKT or Xikar. Chad's line is pretty cool and I have a few of those myself. In fact, the only one I don't have on his list is the Xikar Explorer.

I'd say we're really just dealing with a complete lack of information and experience on Kid's part. Normally guys that don't have much experience admit it, but for whatever reason he doesn't. He covers his inexperience with arrogance and nice guys that you are here, you take him seriously.

We all know that liking somethings looks is a subjective thing and not really something to be made fun of, perhaps except in jest between friends about things like PINK knives (hork!)

Slamming a whole line that you have never seen or came in contact with is different than subjectively not liking something for a real reason.

Some people do prefer several $10-$30 knives rather than one $100 knife. That's their choice, their preference, and their loss. Sometimes there's also some envy involved when somebody can't afford a knife as often happens with sebenzas, striders, etc. I'm not saying that that's the case here though.

Spyderco knives strike me as really ugly. That big ol' thumbhole making the blade look like the head of a duck or something. The blades look totally out of sync with their handles. And the handles, by and large, are ugly, too.

Most knives are seductively lovely. Not these babies.

Not trying to start a flamewar about this. I recognize that the design must appeal to a lot of you, because you buy boatloads of them and proudly display photos here in the forums.

So tell me why you DON'T think they're ugly. Or maybe you DO think they're ugly, but you like them for that reason. I'd be interested in hearing.

Again, not trying to start a flamewar. I'm genuinely interested in why such an ugly duckling has such appeal.

Hi there... I hope this pictures will change your mind about ugly duckling... Enjoy it !
