Spyderco knives are really ugly

Spyderco knives strike me as really ugly. That big ol' thumbhole making the blade look like the head of a duck or something. The blades look totally out of sync with their handles. And the handles, by and large, are ugly, too.

Most knives are seductively lovely. Not these babies.

Not trying to start a flamewar about this. I recognize that the design must appeal to a lot of you, because you buy boatloads of them and proudly display photos here in the forums.

So tell me why you DON'T think they're ugly. Or maybe you DO think they're ugly, but you like them for that reason. I'd be interested in hearing.

Again, not trying to start a flamewar. I'm genuinely interested in why such an ugly duckling has such appeal.

Function > Form

To some people using the knife is more important than looking at it. some models are pretty. Looks are subjective. Opinions are subjective. High function is beautiful to some. etc...

Dear FireMedic1342:

Why try to squelch an interesting discussion? There already is one thoughtful reply.

If you get one and use it for a while, you'll quickly begin to understand why Spydercos look the way that they do. They're designed to cut things, and that they do exceptionally well.

Sharpen, I wasn't being very thoughtful, the truth is, this has been done to death - beating the proverbial dead horse - best to let it die... if you search the forums for "ugly" and "spyderco" you will find more to read than you will ever wish to actually know.

Carry a Caly 3 or a Sage for a while and I promise: it will grow on you.

Also, I noticed that people without an intrinsic interest in cutlery (most women for example) can appreciate the clean styling of many spydercos.

Other than the fact that this topic has been beaten to death repeatedly, you're going to get the same set of replies from the same people. How about using the search feature instead?

In the end, you'll be swamped with Spyderco fans and haters with equal fervor. Also, how about giving one a try before making up your mind about it? If you don't like it, the secondary market is wildly popular and you won't have a problem selling it.

My initial reaction to their look is much the same: They're just homely looking knives. My assumption is that they're probably ergonomically comfy and function pretty well in the hand. The only experience I have with a Spyderco is with a tiny one with a VG-10 blade. I must admit, the blade shape actually makes it very useful for small carving tasks (I used it to reshape some plastic parts for a guitar and it worked very well).

But, yeah, they're pretty ugly. I saw a larger spydie on a youtube video, and it was kinda menacing with that weird looking shape.

Myowngod:

My bad. I'm relatively new to the forum, so unfamiliar with its ways and its history. In the future, I will do a search before I post.

So, is there a way to kill a thread?

Thanx.

Dear myowngod:

I just did a search for "spyderco and ugly" and came up with virtually nothing. I saw one thread that briefly talked about the appeal of Spydercos. Searches for the word "ugly" seem to turn up references to pocket clips, rather than Spydercos.

As the OP, you should be able to close the thread.

BTW, I really suggest you try out a Spydie. :) Check out the Spyderco subforum and see what goes on. Your initial reaction is very similar to mine. And I did not understand the appeal until I gave them a try. Welcome to the forum and sorry about the rather cold reception. Don't take it personally, it's just a reaction to a thoroughly beaten topic, not at you directly.

Try it, you'll like it. I used to think they were but ugly too. now I own over 60 + over 100 of various other brands. Spyderco has such a wide variety of knives that there is at least 1 for everyone's taste. not to mention the quality of the product and the customer service. it is one company I gladly support, and recomend.

Never use the forum search on any forum but use Google instead.

And I agree with you, Spyderco's are ugly.

Be nice.

I thought they were unattractive, not necessarily ugly. But until you get a para2 in your hand, you won't see it. It will all make sense when you get one.

get a manix 2 - its beautiful and functional and ergonomic. the thumb hole is just about the best opening system there is. i also once hated the look of their knives, but now am a convert.

Once you own one and use it you will understand.

Spyderco's are pure performance.

I'm a not a fan either...but then again I'm really picky about what I think looks good. I mean, of most knife manufacturers, there's only like one or two models that I'd consider buying... There's function and form - and this nirvana like location where function and form intersect. While the spyderco knives may function extremely well, imo, they miss on the form and I'd never buy one (at least not any that I've seen).

To my eye this is about the most beautiful folder I've ever seen
ls21%20plain%20horizontal.jpg

and this is about as butt *** fugly as a knife can get

I mean seriously- what were they thinking? How are you expected to clean that if you used that knife to cut anything messy?

Anyway- just my $0.02.
