Spyderco looks

Mine did that too. I cut the clip completely, sanded it down and just carried as a pocket knife. I think that's part of how I lost it. It's a bummer, that thing went on many adventures with me!

I like Spyderco knives and own a number of them. Their appeal to me is entirely for their ergonomics - they open easily, feel good in the hand, and cut well. But they don't really appeal to me esthetically: the blades are too wide, in order to accomodate the Spydie hole. The best looking knives are made by other manufacturers. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar opinion. Again, I'm not not knocking Spyderco knives - they are great cutting tools, in the same way that a Jeep is a great vehicles for off-road driving, but don't look nearly as cool as a Jaguar (or pick your favorite car).

I generally like Spyderco since I bought my first (an Endura I think) in the 90s. My problem is that, with some exceptions, they all pretty much look alike. Sure, there’s exceptions such as the hideous Stovepipe (which seems to be sold by the pound given its current pricing).

The 10 or so in my collection largely represent the collaborations that are truly unique (at least to me): Kapara, Drunken, Paysan, Slysz Bowie, Techno 2, Swayback, Smock, Yojimbo, Spydiechef and Shaman. Next I’d like to find a K2, and am resigned to paying what’s necessary. To me, many seem derivative — of course there’re exceptions for specialized use — but none appeal to me in the way my current group of 10 do. I occasionally find a discontinued model I’d really like but in addition to being hard to find, they’re priced like the last chopper seat out of Saigon. But like the K2, if I want it bad enough I’ll get it ( like the Bowie and Paysan). I love collecting CRK folders but again they’re also highly derivative. A few other of my odd ducks like the Arius, Shiros and Rocksteads pretty much satisfy the itch.

I found a renewed excitement in the hobby by switching to custom fixed blades - that’s been very satisfying if not costly.

I’m waiting for the next Spyderco that’ll get my attention before it’s discontinued!

Happy collecting to all regardless of your preferences. There’s a lid for every pot.

As the owner of over 160 Spydercos, I beg to differ.

There aren't just a few expections from the early humpback profile of a Spyderco knife as represented by the Delica/Endela/Endura lines. I won't bother to list all of them but there are a lot of exceptions to that "standard." I know because I own many of them.

Owning 160 of them would no doubt give one a much greater knowledge and appreciation of their variations. I'm content with a much smaller sample of types I really prefer. Over time I might discover others in the line that I would enjoy having, but so many are discontinued and/or difficult to obtain. I'm on the fence now about getting a GB2, but having a hard time deciding whether it offers much more than what I already have in my Kapara or Smock.

sample size of 1 here but I have both, prefer the kapara. M4 may be superior to 20cv but the kapara just has some kind of je ne sais quoi to me

You did THAT to get rid of the Spydie hole? You do know that the hole is still there, right?
And so is the hump.
You'd probably have more blade left if you'd limited your sharpening efforts to the side that was sharpest when you bought it 😁
I call this knife the “Chicken Boner”. I skinnied up the blade to make tighter turns when doing food prep. I back the tip of my index finger into the crook to get extra blade control. The ZDP-189 stays sharp a long time compared to some of my other kitchen knives.

Lol! What did you use to grind it down like that?
An AEG angle head grinder with a 4”X1/8” wheel was used with a lot of water in a dip bucket. I clamped the grinder in a B&D WorkMate so I could hold the knife in both hands and dip it at will.

I have owned spydercos since mid 90s. Some are funky looking but having been familiar with them for so long I find them attractive on the whole (no pun intended).
I see performance when I look at them
