Sal, I really loved the Lynx. Of course, I haven't found a Wegner design that I haven't liked. It has an excellent feel to it. The paw prints were also a nice touch.

Does it look like it will make it into production? Someone mentioned zytel handles. That wouldn't be bad but the G-10 and BG-42 rocked! I thought about trying to talk Tim out of a prototype.

I was really pulling for the Lynx to get best collaboration because, well..... it was the best collaboration at the show.

Some at the Spyderco table were reluctant about pics. I wouldn't feel right about posting them without Sal's permission. If Sal gives the green light then I could post them or mail them out. I just want to get his blessing first.

Papa Spyder sez no pics of protos!

Tim was talking about doing the G-10/BG-42 model as an exclusive like the Mouse, but doing an FRN/ATS-34 version as the "production Spyder". How the idea went over, I dunno, but that was what Tim was mulling over.

I certainly hope the G-10 version gets produced. FRN would be OK, but not as a replacement for the current Wegner. The G-10 version would be a more likely replacement. If the current Wegner is to be replaced I would liek for it to be a step up or at least on par with the materials on the current version. A step down would be a step backwards in the evolution of the design.

I would like to hear Mr. Glesser's thoughts on the subject.

samo,
Imagine a knife similar in shape to the other Wegners but in between them in size. It was probably about as long as the full size, but much slimmer. It had a more pronounced choil, and a large opening whole (~1/2" I'd guess). It had a compression lock, and G10 handles with little paw prints milled all over it. This was the nicest prototype folder they had IMO.

There was another proto by a South African maker (Ed Scott? I can't remember exactly) that was designed for hunters. It was extremely nice too with a Military or Starmate style clip with the mounting area inlaid so that it was fluch with the handle. There was a small milled area under where the curve of the clip contacts the handle for better clothing retention. A gut hook model was shown along with a plain one.

A friend of mine bought one of the prototypes at the show. I won't mention his name, but maybe he will post a picture of it if Sal will allow him

The Lynx also says goodbye to the wonderfully hefty steel backspacer.

As for replacing the current Wegner, the answer I got was that the Wegner is definitely going away. They tooled up and made a large quantity of them, and they are still working to get them moved. It's a knife that just isn't appreciated by the teeming masses.

The hope is that the Lynx, being smaller and lighter, will find it's way into more casual carry pockets.

A personal rant - I hate it when the good things in life go away just because the majority of the world is too stupid or cheap to appreciate them.

Hi Guys. sorry 'bout the pics problem. It normally takes 4 - 8 months to put a model into production, assuming it is going to be made. That's after field testing, and glitches are out.

If we permit photos, we get this avalanche of phone calls to the Sales dept. with questions they cannot answer. A real waste of time.

We try to share future info here as we can, but until we know we're going to make it, and where we are going to make it, it becomes more of a problem than good.

Your kind understanding is appreciated.

I understand completely Sal. I appreciate the fast response.

Is it likely that the Lynx will be made? Will it be a replacement for the current Wegner? It may be too soon to tell but what configurations are you leaning towards?

I liked the Lynx quite a bit also. Sorry to see the Wenger go but I will just have to purchase a couple for future use.

Sal - please keep the handle texture of the Lynx the same as the Prototypes. Loved that design!! :-)

How much would one of the prototype Lynx's cost?

For an EDC knife it would sure be nice to have the clip more towards the top of the knife. I love my Wegners, but both the Sr. and Jr. ride high on my pocket. Please consider making them more discreet.

Maybe I'll get lucky this time and the Lynx will have a reversible clip - either that or a lefty version would be nice.

Funny you should mention that, Leo! The Lynx has clip holes for right and left hand, tip up and tip down.

Someone at the Blade show said they thought the Lynx would be in production within 90 days. I hope that isn't just wishful thinking. It really is an excellent design.

I do miss the heft of the steel backspacer, but the Lynx does have the compression lock.

This one sounds great-
Why is it that all of the ones I want aren't available yet?
The design sounds great- I love my Wegner- it's my absolute favorite "go to" EDC. Something *slimmer* & thus a tad lighter would be a big plus if the profile is the same/similar.

Boy, that's too good to be true!

Ambidextrous and with the choice of tip up or down to boot! I'll buy at least one - probably more - guaranteed!
The Wegner always looked very atractive to me, but as a southpaw, I couldn't justify buying another right-handed only folder.
Thanks for the good news, Brian!
