Spyderco military.... I think im in love.

Tip up vs. Tip down gets discussed all the time. I'm in the minority, prefer tip up. This is for right front pocket.

A few things that get thrown around: Sal designed it tip down and did not drill it any other way, so any thing else is sacrilegious. True, but the Mili is old and no knives were four way back then. Tip down was the most common position on all knives at the time also. The Mili can't be tip up because there isn't a liner back there. You could get around this, check out the Caly Jr and my modded Mili.

The Mili is too big and nobody should have a knife that big tip up, it just doesn't work. Sal states he prefers tip down and he is lighting quick on getting it out of his pocket. As Spyderco's CQI evolves, many bigger knives are tip up. Szabo for example. The Mili is still in its first generation more or less (no Mili 2 yet). The 2 will probably have 4way clip. The PM1 was tip down only, the two is 4way.

Those reasons are silly to me and don't really hold water anyway. Saying a designer designed it and you shouldn't figure out what works for you is not productive.

The only legitimate reason for tip down in my opinion is it can give a faster draw due to less manipulation on drawing. I don't notice personally, but believe the guys who claim it. I personally don't care about that, what's a half second? My knife is a tool not a weapon.

For me, safety is the most important thing. That's a big blade to come open. I have dropped mine and the blade pops open. I know a lot of people who say in x number of years it has never opened. Well I still wear seatbelt, and one hasnt saved my life yet. Again, 4" blade in pocket possibly coming open with a pointy tip. No thanks.

It also rides much better in pocket tip up. It takes up less space and doesn't have the thumb ramp scrape in tip up.

When it comes down to it, nobody's wrong, it's just opinion, but don't knock it because it was designed 15+ years ago and it was perfect from the beginning. Spyderco would not be the company they are without innovations.

It's not a maturity or enlightenment moment one hasnt reached. It's just an opinion like which knife to buy in the first place. Like what you like and try things out.

Here is a pic of one white FRN Endura C10PWH, a limited series inspired by artist Tom Sachs (center) and surrounded by a cadre of PM2's and Millies.
