SpyderCo Mule Team Grips

Do you know if a taco sheath will be available?
Taco sheaths will not be available... they just don't work well with our production methods.

I'm planning on just doing the big rivet version but did test a small rivet version. Its probably slimmer than any "taco" sheath at 2 - 1/8" wide.

So far so good in the sheath department. First prototypes are done.... draw and carry options are fine. Ulti-Clip 3.3's and Tek locks will mount on the top or bottom on each.

Tension is good but I want excellent so I'll strategically shave a little off the molds in the CNC mill.

Mule teams are done.... Kydex and Grips

Link to video:

I would recommend our kydex with our grips.

The straight spine blade will work in the arched kydex almost perfectly.
The straight spine blade works a little better in the straight spine kydex.

This is great. I'm trying to place an order for the Kydex and scales package, though, and it won't accept the promo code - it says it's "only valid for specific items". Do I need to apply it separately rather than getting the bundle? Thanks, in any case, it looks great.

Edit - order placed, no worries about the code.

It looks like the site needed some time to populate the code, it should be working now. I see your order and I'll send you a refund for the 15%. Thanks for your order and sorry for the issue on the site.

Man, thank you. That's excellent customer service and I really appreciate it. Can't wait to try these out.

My scales and sheath arrived this afternoon. Very positive first impressions. They look great and feel really nice in the hand. They fit up nice and tight. Wider, smoother, a little heavier, and closer to being flush with the tang compared to the stock scales. The knife feels more substantial now. The hardware is unobtrusive and the included allen wrenches are much appreciated.

Kydex fit is perfect and the thumb press to release is nicely calibrated. The sheath is lower-profile than I had expected, which is very nice. Fits nicely in a jeans pocket. The sheath also fits the stock scales with decent retention, although they don't release as smoothly.

Great job with this design and I'm very happy with the package. I'll be putting it to work at least a bit next week. Might be able to post some pics as well. Thanks to S StonerCNC for putting this all together.

I have 2 sets on order !!

Question: What are your recommendations for your sheath when it come to a pocket clip ?

Thanks,

Sharky

Ulti-Clip 3.3 Slims

Space them out a little bit with with some rubber rubber washers and use 3/8' or 1/2" post with a couple 8-32 truss bolts.

I have a bunch of mounting hardware at the shop and will toss in some hardware.

Funny thing is there are 2 people with 2 sets on order, both this afternoon and both with Blade forum codes!

Is your first name Jeff? If I don't hear back I guess you'll both get some hardware! 😄

Ok, better late than never haha! First pic, the Stoner CNC grips. Pretty darn happy here!

I really like the tank tread milling on the orange one! I’ll be ordering all my future grips this way if possible. I would love to see red/black in the tank tread pattern! ;)

Here with a couple other mules, both Halpern grips. The black being factory Spyderco black textured, the others I bought directly from Halpern some years ago, and hand-smoothed them myself. Have some blue/black hand-smoothed ones kicking around somewhere too.

Here are a couple spine shots to try and convey the different contouring. First pic is centered between the middle two knives. Second pic is centered between the right two knives, trying to capture the difference between the Halpern (black) and the Stoner (orange).

The Halpern scales are only contoured longitudinally, from edge to spine, in an oval cross-section. From tip to butt, they have a perfectly flat profile. They’re much thinner at the edge and spine, and fuller in the middle.

However, the Stoner grips are sort of opposite. From edge to spine, they’re pretty square (with rounded corners), with only mild longitudinal contouring, which makes them more hand filling. This makes them thicker along the spine where you generally put the most pressure when pushing the edge through something. Having large hands, I really like this! They have some mild contouring from tip to butt, with a palm swell in the middle. The thinnest part is where the screws go through the scales.

One other nice little detail, a hidden lanyard cutout at the butt:

Finally, the sheaths…

Another home run! Kudos S StonerCNC , I’ve never seen a machined Kydex sheath so well executed!:thumbsup::thumbsup: Retention is great! And it is a svelte pancake, very slim and trim. Nothing extra here!

Overall, I am VERY impressed! I’ll definitely be ordering more of these in the future.

If I had to give any feedback on these scales, I’d like to see a little more (deeper) contouring. You can see on the OD green/black that’s it’s ~3 layers deep from the palm swell to the screws. I’d like to see it 5 or 6 layers deep, but I’d want the scales a touch thicker by this amount instead of thinner at the screws.

Thanks for all the pictures and feedback!

Red/Black G10 is a little tough. The American Manufactures all have a Burgundy shade. It has something to do with the bleed though from the black to red with the epoxy they use.

The Chinese can do it but that's something I'm trying to avoid.

Next batch we will make some customs... IDK if red black is on the list but I can mix up the colors. That's probably 2-3 months out.

That's a keen observation and applicable to the knife makers on this website. The human hand is very flexible and lots of different grip shapes will work.

If a grip is too filling/too thin the overall volume of the grip can be adjusted without changing the thickness or palm swells.

We do a lot of kydex. Lol, for every set of knife grips we machine someone needs a sheath. So that's something we do behind the scenes for different OEM customers.

Lol, You must have really big hands! That one I can't do.

I maxed the grips out for 3/8" G10. The locators on the backside use .050" material, .010-.015" to deck them flat and .300 thick on the grip with a little bit left over as a safety factor

Sharky, your grips and sheaths are going out today. Attached is how I set the sheaths up for the Ulti-Clip 3.3

Happy with the scales! Nice work S StonerCNC

I see both of you guys have serrated blades how did the sheaths work in those? Serrated blades can cause issues on kydex and we tuned everything for the regular blades.
