I'm looking to purchase a Spyderco Native 5 in a month or so, and I want to know opinions from those who have experience with it before I buy. Solid lock up? Does it feel small (I don't have large hands)?

Awesome knife I have 2, the frn version and the native 5. Solid as a rock, love the finger choil, and the best part it's made in Golden. If not my favorite model knife of all time it's a close 2nd.

It's defenetly a solid knife with great ergos . Blade can be short for some task . The benchmade mini barrage can be a great choice .

Great knife. I regret selling my G10 models but I only did so to make room for the new Native 5 carbon fiber S110V that I put on pre-order 5 months ago. Taking forever to get here but I hear rumor of a May release. It's going to be a winner.

I don't have a Native 5 but I do have the FRN Native 4. Man I love that knife, I carry it every day to work. It does not feel like a small knife to me because the ergos are so good. I would say its more of a stout, compact knife than small. When I choke up on the blade, it literally feels like an extension of my hand. Since the 5 is pretty much a better version of the 4, I would say definitely buy it. I am pumped about the FRN version of the N5 I keep seeing pop up here and there.

Oh and even the pinned native 4 has an absolutely rock solid lock up. Have been using regularly for 6 months and still just as tight as the day I got it.

Don't know how similar these even are , but I have an old 1st generation Native and it's still going strong . So if the newer ones where all improvements then you should be good to . :D Here's my old beater

I have had a Native 5 for a couple of years. Bought one right after they were introduced.

The lockup is bank vault solid.
I have medium hands and find that the knife fits quite well.

I've been quite pleased with it.
I have a Native 4 as well and prefer the full flat grind of the 5. Also, the opening hole on the 4 is a bit covered by the handle. The 5 does not have this problem.

The S35VN holds an edge well. I find it to be the equal of S30V.

I like the ergos. I almost always use the choil as part of my grip, but if I don't use the choil there is still room for a full grip.

The G10 is well done with a good surface finish that gives a good grip without being too abrasive. Between the G10 and the steel frame the knife feels very very solid in the hand, but isn't noticeably heavy in the pocket.

Highly recommended.

It's a real solid knife, but keep in mind that being a lockback, it's really stiff. The blade can't really be flicked out unless you go real loose on the pivot... I'm very impatient, so that was a deal-breaker for me. Other than that, it was solid. Absolute perfect F&F at a great price.

Great little pocket tank.I have carried it since it was released.Good quality, strong knife, and the fit and finish are nice. The ergonomics feel correct and it's a pleasure to carry. The steel takes an edge easily for me and the edge holds about the same as S30V.I highly recommend the Native 5.

new Favorite knife. yep.
full handle ona knife with compact overall dimensions. fabulous.

I picked one up a couple of weeks ago and I am really pleased. I really like my Persistence, and I was hoping that it would just be a nicer version of that. It most ways it is exactly that. It is almost the same size, which is my perfect EDC size. The G10 is much more grippy on the Native, and combined with the ultra skeletonized liners, the knife has a bit of a hollow sound when you handle it. This is not a bad thing and the knife feels incredibly solid, but I was still a bit surprised by it. I plan to get some custom scales made for it, which will likely alleviate this anyway. As Justin mentioned, the lockback mechanism is really solid, which makes the knife hard to flick open. If it is a day where I think I might be standing around bored, I may take the Persistence or Ambitious instead. If you don't have one of these or a Tenacious, you should pick one up as well. They are simply a joy to operate.

I love my Native 5, very solid little beastie. Don't think you'll regret getting one for a moment.

It's a fantastic knife, and one that fits my medium-to-large hands like a glove. While, as JustinWatts pointed out above, it's not really flickable, it's super comfortable and just the right size for EDC, IMO. Yes, some might complain that the blade length is a bit skimpy thanks to the choil butting in on the action, but I've yet to encounter a situation that left me wanting for more.

Adam

Bought one solely because it was the 2013 Spyderco forum knife and had an S110V blade, but didn't expect to like the knife itself. Wrong! - really like it. I searched around and found a black G10/S35VN version and I'm very happy with it. Great ergos, truck-like build.

Fantastic knife. My personal favorite. I have few of them in different flavors.

I EDC them for couple years. Started with regular G10. Fantastic ergos. My hands are large and for many cutting tasks I use finger choil, which I like. I love blade geometry and steels. S35VN sharpens fairly easy and holds the edge well. Nice, smooth lock. The knife is little thicker and heavier than my other favorite knife Caly, but I found this this is to my liking. After last summer I carry Spyderco 2013 Forum Native5 every day. I love it. Sometimes on weekend I carry Titanium Fluted variant. I am not a fan of plain Titanium scales, but fluting makes Native5 look stunning and scales a little rounded, which makes the knife even more comfortable in the hand.
I strongly advise to buy it. Keep your eyes open on exchange, sometimes you can get a good deal om lightly used.
Good luck
