My girlfriend bought me a Spyderco Native (S30V) for Christmas and I love it. It is compact and well made. It is a sensible everyday carry knife. It was priced in the range that most people can afford. It makes a real snap when it locks open. It says USA on it. I'm well pleased. Thank you Spyderco.

Late to the p[arty but better late than never. Congratulations on your gift of one of the best smaller knives around.

Yeap , that Native is one heck of a deal. Great steel , blade shape and overall design.

I just picked up the new version of the native (native III). It's ok, but in my opinion it has three drawbacks....

1. The knive is pretty thick (handle) compared to my delica and not as comfortable to carry.

2. The opening hole in the blade is partially covered by the handle material when closed, and this makes it difficult to get a good grip on it when opening quickly.

3. The lock.....it's almost annoying that you have to press it in so far to disengage the lock.

Which version are you talking about? The older one?

Well, older - newer....the Native III is a newer design than the Native II, true, but they are both currently in production. Since his knife says USA it means he is talking about the Native II. The Native III is produced with VG-10 steel in Japan, while the Native II is produced in Golden, CO using S30V. And, yes, the Native II is slimmer than the Native III.

I very much disagree on your third point. For me a backlock can not disengage late enough. Late disengagement is a direct security feature: it means the lock engagement is deeper and you are less likely to accidentally release the lock. Security always over convenience.

Great little knife! My serrated Native is the most used/abused knife I own. It is the one I put in my pocket when doing yard work and other chores.
After years of cutting roots in the dirt, doing all kinds of yard work, being lost and lying in the dirt for several months, even opening a can or two, it still has absolutely no blade play.

I've carried mine for about 6 months, the clip hung up one time on the side of the forklift I was climbing onto, every since them the clip comes loose and hangs up on everything, it has even damaged the FRN recession that it sits in. I torqued it down reallyreally tight this last time, so far so good, but if it does it again I'm going to epoxy it in place. Other that that, I love it.

I've had my Native for about 1 year now and there is starting to be just a little bit of blade play. It is the serrated edge version even though when I ordered it from "thebladeshop" I ordered the plain edge and it came in the Spyderco plain-edge marked box :( could have sent it back but thought it was too much of a hassle , overall damn good knife for the price.

Add me to the fan club. I have one with the SS and I love it... and I've been impressed with the Aus10 steel as well. Great knife.

I had mine for about 3-4 years, great knife as most already said. The clip broke on me last month, I've been carrying it in my pocket. What improvments have been made to the 3 comparing to the older ones?

As I said, the III is not really an "improvement", it is a slightly different model, with the same general shape. The swedge on the blade is different, the steel is different and the handle is different and the origin is different. They are both current production models.

The Spyderco Native for $40, and the new Kershaw Junkyard Dogs each available for $50 or less, are the best values around! Great designs + great materials + great prices + great companies= GREAT KNIVES!!!

Congratulations on the Native, and on having a girlfriend with good taste!

I've had my Native III PE for several months now. I am very happy with it. I have about 40 knives and this is one of my favorites. I have many more that cost a lot more than the Native but I still come back to it. For the price and the value you get for it, I think it is probably one of the best deals out there.

I'm like pkdmslf - I've got plenty of more expensive folders, but I keep finding the Native in my pocket at the end of the day. The handle ergonomics, the finger choil, the flat pocket-presence: it's just a great knife.

Now if they'd only make it with G10 handle scales! And an Axis lock (or at least BB)!

I've had the S30V Native for about 3 years now and it is a great knife for $39.99. Use and abuse it daily. From gutting fish to opening carboard boxes it is all around great knife. I think I may have sharpened it once. It still is super sharp. It is a worry free/ always there kind of tool.

I like the looks of it...But it feels absolutely abominable in my hand. :thumbdn: Thats why I never bought one.
