Spyderco Native quality?

I was the first guy to pick one up from my friendly neighborhood WalMart, or so the salesman said. It's my current EDC. The blade has no play. It's a great knife, in a great steel, for a steal.

Call and find out. Walmart item number, shown on the printed display and on the box the knife comes with, in the knife case is #60. Ask for knife #60. The fact that a store carries the Spyderco Native may be news to the employees. If it appears on the printed display at the knife counter, in sporting goods section, then ask them to dig in their inventory. The Spyderco box does not fit well in their inventory so it is kept differently than most other knives there. Patience, grasshoppa. Good luck. http://www.walmart.com/cservice/ca_...ALL&rx_title=&rx_dest=/index.gsp&#.x=18&#.y=6 Scroll down this page for Austin & nearby store's phone numbers.:D

Man, you have a pot full of Super Centers around you in TX. This time tomorrow I expect you to be up to your @#$% in Natives.

Best,

I didn't really look at it close when at the store. I'm going to go back tonight after work and check the others.

I'll post an update later.

The one big upside to buying at brick and mortar stores is that you can examine something before you buy it. ALWAYS TAKE A LOOK AT IT.

Mine didn't have the satisfying CLACK when it locks open, like my Native III does, but the knife is a great performer. Got mine from the Walmart in Shrewsbury PA.

I did own a regular Native about a year or two ago. I forget what steel it was, but it dulled very quickly, and I was not happy with it. This new one is my new EDC, and is a top performer, especially for the money!

I already posted this in another thread, but I picked up a Native from the Super-Wal Mart in Elkton, MD last week. Fit and finish was great and no blade play. Super sharp blade with very clean grinds and good "click" when opened. Only issue was some roughness in the Spyderhole. Two seconds with my Dremmel fixed that problem. I'm not a big Spyderco fan, but I was impressed with the Native. Guess the lession is definitely check the knife before you buy to avoid any QC issues.

By the way, the regular Wal Mart in New Castle, DE didn't have the Native in stock so no tax free shopping.

No, I bought mine at a regular WalMart. You do have to hunt for them though and chances are you'll have to help the employee look. When I bought mine the guy had no clue the knife board had even been changed. I asked for the new Spyderco they just got in and he just gave me the deer in the headlights look. So I said "gimme number 60", that got him moving. My new Native is the same quality as every other Spyderco I've ever bought. Shaving sharp out of the box, perfect fit and finish and locks up like a vault.

Well, I'm off to find "Number 60" Great price for a great knife. No one can resist that! As long as it still says "Golden, Colorado, USA, Earth" It's all right in my book.

DD

"Golden, Colorado, USA, Earth" Mine says it, which is good, cuz I find that the Venusian made Spyderco's suck @$$, and the ones stamped out on Saturn are nice but very pricey, just get a Sebenza/RRF or 3... :)

I know the guys that work behind the counter but even still the store has a policy that they can only have one knife out on the counter per customer at a time. So they have to physically pack up and take one back before giving you another one. Even still I made them take out all four they had in stock so I could see each one. I took the first one they showed me in the end but even still I like to compare and get one with the most centered blade when closed, with the good thwack when opened and no vertical or lateral blade play.

To me that is the sole benefit of a hands on purchase. If you buy one hands on and are not happy with it you need to learn from that and look them over before buying in the future. You have no one to blame but yourself if you get one that is sub par after getting the chance to see them first. To me it would be worth a few bucks more to get one 'hands on' but to get to play with it first and still get a bargain for a premium knife is a great opportunity. Speaking of that. This window of opportunity could be for a limited time only so if you have a friend tell them about the deal with the Native and if you have any xmas gifts coming up you need for sportsman what a deal. I wouldn't be upset if a second one of these was in my stocking this Christmas!

I asked the knife counter man at one Walmart if they had any closeouts. He put at least half-a-dozen boxes on the counter, SOG multi tool, $7 SAK classic in black and several other, previously hidden, knives. Ask and you shall receive.

I rember noticing a framelock, silver colored, folder with aerated scales. It looked like a Mayo design. What was that? I will have to go back and see what it was.

Another store had a close-out only display built into the counter. Right before your eyes and not hidden away.

Shopping at Walmart can be a treasure hunt. The staff has always been helpful, polite and fun to talk with. Thank you WM for making my blade budget go farther.

Best,

oregon

I was surprised to see a Buck Mayo design on the board when I went back to check on Friday night, after I got my Native. I asked if any were left, and was told that "some dude came in and bought every last one, muttering about selling them on eBay". I also saw a Kershaw Blur under closer scrutinization.

As soon as the clerk handed me one for inspection, I said "I'll take it" - -can't believe S30V and made in USA for 39.48! Jumped all over that one!!

oooh... not to hijack, but which Blur and what was the price? I really like the tactical Blur a friend has, but I kinda like the red and black scaled, uncoated version.

I have noticed also that on some of the FRN handled knives by Spyderco that also have the barrel bolt for the pocket clip that the security of the clip screw depends on the clip seating flat in the slot that is cut out for it. I have had three that when I took the clip off of to reset didn't seat properly without fudging with it. I often flip them to left handed because being ambidextrous I carry some left and some right. Naturally I pick the easy ones to flip and the one single bolt type are a snap to swap out usually. On these particular knives the clips were quite difficult to seat down in on the opposite side and when the clip did go in one side was higher than the other. This caused an off set tension on the screw and consequently allowed the screw to loosen as the clip would move farther in and seat deeper after carry time. Loctite really helped here on these ones. I still have my Salt 1 that simply won't allow the clip to seat flat on the body handle and loctite holds that screw down so I don't have the clip moving all around.

Sometimes you have to hold the knife up in the light so you can look under the clip to see if it is sitting flat on the body of the folder or if it has one side raised up a bit that allows light under it where it contacts the handle. On one Native that was particularly stubborn I had to cut out a slice on the left side for the mounting. This slice was taken from the slot to get the clip to sit flat like it is supposed to.

I had a Buck 119, Buck Stockman, and Victorinox Super Tinker on the counter at WalMart just before I logged on here. Bought all three. The very nice older man behind the counter hadn't heard of that policy, I suppose.

The other day when I got my Native, the same man had never heard of it. "Can I see a Spyderco Native?" "A Spydawhonow?"

I told him the number and he grabbed one. Said they just got them in an only had 3 of them.

A lady came up to ask me about the knife. She said her son had just joined the Conservation Corps and she wanted to buy him a folding knife. She had picked out some cheapo knife they had in a plastic display case hanging on the wall. She asked "so would this one be a piece of junk?" I told her I have a lot of junk knives and they work fine for me, but yeah, junk is junk. She asked me about some of the other brands they carry. Kershaw, Gerber etc... I told her that they all have pros and cons (and explained Kershaw's assisted opening), but that Spyderco offers the best blade edge and steel for the money.

She got a Native, and my good deed for the day was done.

No blade play on my Wal-Mart Native.

In the past, with a 440V Native, I have lightly tapped (LIGHTLY, I said) the pivot pin with a brass punch to elminate blade play. If I'd bought it from Wal-Mart though, I would have simply exchanged it.

Nice job on the recommendation, Hair.

Just bought the last Native at our Super Center here in town. Paid 42 and some change out the door. S30V and almost no perceptilbe play in the blade. Couldn't be happier with it. I live in a pretty small town and was very suprised they carried them. Probably would've missed it if not for this thread. Thanks fellas. :D

I just got back from WM and I returned my Native because of blade play [read parent post] they only had two left and both of them had the exact same blade play.

I haven't seen them here yet, or at least in the 2 Wal-marts I've been in. Agreed, this is too good of a bargain to pass up. I already have a Native III/blue FRN (I believe it was a non-etched forum knife) and haven't really used it much because it's a bit of a collectible. Up here, I'm figuring they would be in the $50-60 CDN range and that would still be a great buy. I was "snooping" this weekend to check - ended up at Target and picked up a BM530 and a Camillus Blaze. Went to Cutting Edge and checked to see if they had any Spydie Gray Caly Jrs left (they had two left when I bought mine a few weeks ago). They had an SE one in the showcase, so I asked - she checked and said "nope", so I asked her to check the boxes and there was a Gray one left, so I said "sold":D I wasn't able to get one of ZDP sprint runs, but now I have two Gray Calys:)
