Spyderco Native quality?

*UPDATE*

Yesterday I went into Wal-Mart for other reasons and I decided to see if they had a new stock of Natives in. I asked to see all 3 they had.

The very first one I looked at was perfect and I figured maybe was just a bad bunch from before... but sure enough the other two had unacceptable blade play.

Judging from the responses in this thread it must be hit or miss but look closely because there ARE bad ones.

--I was sure glad to be able to get one though. This knife sure holds an edge when scoring sheet rock or cutting insulation all day.

Best deal in town. Only play mine has is with me.

ive bought 2 natives at walmart, the first one seemed great, but turns out the clip screw wasnt really secure, and the clip ended up tearing into the frn. so i returned it for another, and the second one has been flawless.

You would think that with today's technology and high tolerance machinery that Spyderco wouldn't be so inconsistent on their quality. Seems like tight locks, even grinds, and secure clips should be a slam dunk.

I just picked up a Native from Wally-world. Lockup is rock solid. Grind lines are perfect. I like the 3-D handle better. The polish isn't up to the finish of my Native III. But the blade is much more easy to open one-handed than my native III, and that was my only complaint against that one.
From my sample of one-All-in-all-great bang for the buck. Well done Sal & Co.

I bought an S30V Native from Walmart over Christmas break and the first one they pulled was great by my standards, and I am pretty whiny about knives. Interestingly, the knives that have a better rep for fit and finish from Spyderco I already owned had pretty noticeable flaws.

I use my SS Native as my work knife. It has solid lock-up but I use it as work knife because I don't really like the Native.Going against the grain,I'm not a Native fan.

Same knife. About 8 bucks cheaper than dealer cost.

And there is where Spyderco went wrong. I bet there are a LOT of spyderco dealers who are super pissed about this deal.

Nothing good can come for the company or dealers when a manufacturer begins to sell at Walmart.

I'm really disapointed at Spyderco for doing this...

I've handled a few natives and they were all fine, one of my favorite spydercos.

Still, S30V Native for 40 bucks? Is this the same one from NGK for 60? If I can buy it in real life for 40, I might get it...in an hour.

Just after Christmas I bought a Spydeco Native for $65. Since then I found some at a nearby Walmart for a few cents under $40.00 and I looked at one of them very closely. It was made in Golden, Colo. and has a S30V blade, just like the one I had bought at Carter's Country.

Just bought my second Native today.

Excellent fit, finish, workmanship. Blade locks up with a satisfying "clunk".

Why another Native? Because I could and at $40 they're worth 5 times the cost. I love the S30V steel.

Thanks Sal.

One of the niver knives in my small meager new collection. On a budget I just could not pass this one up. My first Spyderco!! Steel feels as nice as my S30V Kershaw Spec Bump. Very solid knife. Knife nuts are going to scoop up on this deal.

I love it but returned it for more Kerhsaws I am addicted to KO Kershaws.....

Just picked one without looking, perfect. locks up good no lateral play, takes and holds an edge pretty good for a $40 knife. couldn't believe wally world had a spyderco. ahgar

Mine locks up perfect, and while it isn't hair popping sharp, it devours paper and shaves easily. After 2 weeks of EDC it hasn't had any perceptable loss of sharpness. I did look over the 6 Natives they had on hand when I bought mine, and the worst one only showed very slight play, which wouldn't seem to be a problem.

I checked these out and they look like an excellent deal. Was so sharp I accidently cut my thumb just testing the sharpness. Good grip to it but I still feel like there is too big of a motion to make with your thumb for easy opening. With all the good feedback on them I think it'll be my first Spyderco when I get my next paycheck.
