Spyderco OR Benchmade?!

Yeah both here too.
As far as opening method, my preference is Spyderhole on most folders... thumbstud, thumbdisc, etc. are just fine too.
If I like a blade enough, I'll adapt to however it deploys.

Right now I have more Spydercos than Benchmades. But I make the mistake of buying a Griptilian, and now I have started a Benchmade spree. I love the Axis Lock.

from a quality and using point of view, i like them both.
but spyderco has much more models that appeals to me, mostly because of benchmade's fondness for swedges and awkward handle shapes.

Spyderco -
I think the hole looks different and unique, and being more comfortable to open, while also giving a nice ramp for the thumb. Their jimping isn't too aggressive but helps with a solid grip. I prefer their blade shapes, flat grinds, and prices. They make a killer knife with killer materials for an awesome price. Where as if you were looking for the same thing on a Benchmade you likely won't find it. Benchmade makes nice designs but I prefer the look, feel, and huge variety of Spyderco knives.

I have a few Spyderco knives (Q, Lady Bug, Endura, Native) and only a single Benchmade (Griptillian). None of these knives are representative of the higher-grade products from either company, but the are in the same general class/price range as each other.

Based on this limited ownership experience I prefer the Benchmade. Some of my Spyderco have blade wobble; the Benchmade has a smoother action; and I prefer the Benchmade's lock.

Both are fantastic for their own reasons.
Spydie hole and axis-lock should live in harmony.
Axis-lock Military would be my dream collab.

I have BM Axis lock & also the Spyderco ball lock. The Spyderco ball lock is stiffer. You need to pinch the handle, fingers away from the blade when closing...took me a week to getting used to but once I got it...boy I can put it down. The details on the Spyderco is really nice...for the price range you gotta pay a little more for BM.

I generally prefer Spyderco grinds (ffg blades), but I'm loving Benchmade grips. Both have their standouts for sure.

If I had a fat wad of dough to spend right now there are exactly 2 Spyderco knives that I feel like I NEED to try. The pm2 and the Southard. With Benchmade I feel like I NEED to try about a dozen...

I like them both. I like Spydercos blade shapes, and opening hole, but not most of their locks. I don't really care for back locks, and liner/frame locks aren't generally lefty friendly. For that reason, I LOVE the Axis lock. I also really like that Benchmade is willing to sent out free parts, and will replace your blade for a small fee. With a Spyderco, you're pretty much SOL if you break a blade, and if you want a clip they want to charge you for it.

I love both, Spyderco wins in the sub-$100 for me but for the mid- to higher-end stuff I prefer Benchmade.

The ergos on the cheap Spydies are much better, in my hands. But they can't touch the smoothness of the BM mid-range stuff, and BM really has their HT down.

A G10 axis lock Endura/Military with a BM CPM154CM blade would be... almost better than "adult time". Almost.

Spiders and Butterflies should always live in harmony.

Both companies produce the best $100-$300 folders on the market. Spyderco's strength lies in great slicers, outstanding blade materials, and constant innovation in designs. Benchmade's strength lies in the fact that its best knives are USA made, toughness, speed of deployment (axis lock), and absurdly good customer service.

There is no such thing as CPM154CM. It's a typo made by many stores and others. You have 154CM (ingot steel) or CPM154 (particle metallurgy). ;)

Yes yes, but in the interest of internet Forum-dom I still say CPM154CM (as in the "154 CM made by Crucible Powder Metallurgy") because too many people see CPM154 and think you mean 154 CM ;)

CPM154 is to 154 CM what Charazard is to Charmander. :glee:
