Spyderco Paysan

If your position is no knife is worth more than $x amount to you, it's not a discussion of value for any knife that costs $x+1. You won't buy it regardless of the value the manufacturer put into the knife. There is nothing for anyone to discuss there.

Certainly price and value are part of discussing knives. But reading page after page of people saying nothing more than "it costs too much", or "I'd buy some cheaper knife" gets pretty tedious. And it overwhelms most of the discussion about any other aspect of the knife.
This thread is about the price of the Payzone. No other aspects of the knife were discussed in the OP.

“I would never pay $500 for a knife” is an opinion and part of the discussion. If you don’t agree with it, that’s cool.

Doesn't it depend on the knife? Take the Slysz Bowie for example - based on the fit, finish, and materials, I think it was a bargain. To get a knife of similar quality you would have to spend a lot more money (imo). So expensive and overpriced are not the same thing. fwiw, I don't generally purchase expensive knifes. But I appreciate and understand why some knifes are expensive.

Casio makes $10 watches. That doesn't mean their $1500 watches aren't a good value if you want a $1500 watch.

Yes, it does for sure. I agree, the Slysz Bowie is an amazing knife for the price. So nice, in fact, that I really have a tough time seeing the value of the Paysan. If someone can see value in it at the current price, then heck yeah, buy it.

I will however disagree with you on the Casio stuff. I have a solar atomic G-Shock 6900. I paid $70 for it. I have seen and handled some $500 and up G-Shocks....they didn’t have anything on my 6900. Some of the analog ones look cool, but some don’t have all the functionality that my 6900 has.

If those knives sell it makes sense.

Very true. I agree.

Agree. That's probably true for 99.9% of most non-digital watches. Even more so for mechanical analog watches - does anybody need mechanical movement? Of course not. That doesn't mean they don't value and appreciate them. If this were based only on need and nothing use 95% of us could get by with a Drifter. We all have different preferences and value different things (brand, steel, build quality, materials, appearance, and probably 100 other factors).

Don’t think I don’t see the “value” in something that is expensive but you buy anyway. I have a $400 Tissot Automatic that I love.

I would compare this with say a LionSteel TiSpine for comparable materials and construction method at least. Now my experience with LionSteel has been very good quality levels but I don't know how that quality compares to the Taiwanese Spyderco's but the price difference is ~$190 US which is a big gap.

I think it’s relevant to include comparisons with the previous collaboration with the same designer using the same steel, and less complicated machining on the Ti. It’s a bit of a price hike over the nirvana, which I didn’t buy either. With spyderco I like to stay at that $200 sweet spot, which has always made me smile, whether at map or disco pricing. But my opinion is limited to my experience, and thus far it’s unfortunately not been my fate to own a Taichung spydie, (not for lack of interest, just bad timing) so maybe it’s not relevant to this thread at all. I’d pay $500 for a Todd Rexford tho!

I certainly do not need to hold a knife to figure out if it is worth $500 to me. Here's why: I will not pay more than $250 for any knife. Most of the time my upper limit is about $150 give or take. I have held and used $350 - $550 knives in the past and I have figured out that beyond about $250 I see nothing of value added (for me), so I don't buy. The whole diminishing returns thing.

I think this is very rational thinking that only after chasing high end knives can one get. I find myself is also falling back to the sub $250 zone. In fact lately I rarely go above the $200 price line.

Honestly, I love the blade, and with the new pivot construction, and tapered milling down the handle justifies the price to me. Yes there's more to this knife than the nirvana. But maybe I'm biased caused I pre-ordered it.

I think a distinctive voice is often a trait of successful youtube channels. I like his vids.
