Spyderco Police 3 - fake from EBAY "faeithed"

I never fails when you call out an ebay seller for selling counterfeits the first thing they say is they're not a knife person. Bull Sh*t

I am in I.T. we had a computer and iPad air stolen from one of the company vehicles. This vehicle was broken into. We tracked the iPad to a specific location where it stayed on for 2 days. They were not even going to send someone out until the person here decided they were going to go out. The police at that point said they would send an officer with our employee to the address. When they got to the location knocked on the door and spoke with the owner of the property, I started dinging the ipad using find my iphone and the ring option. They could hear it go off. The mother of the household was very nice and allowed the officer in. It seems her 16 year old son had stolen this iPad or acquired it somehow. They recovered the ipad but the laptop was not recovered. After this I expected questioning to some extent? The total value of both items was around $1500 and both were new within the last 2 months. In my state this is a felony amount.

Sadly nothing at all was done to further investigate what happened to the computer or the breaking and entering of a company vehicle.

Long story short: the police won't do shit (not joking). You pretty much have to take this into your own hands if you want anything done about it.

Honestly if it were me I would send the knife back and take the refund if that is required to get your money back. It is possible the seller didn't know it was a fake. As mentioned if they don't sell many blades, they might have seen a lot of knives for a low cost and maybe heard of the brand before, they then did a short bit of research and bought a lot of knives to sell for a profit. I have thought about doing this with lower end knives but I was worried about counterfeits myself and I don't want to take the risk of having a stock of useless junk.

The way the world is these days sucks. Criminals are becoming the victims somehow.

I took this off her listing for a Spyderco Civilian. What the heck is she talking about?
.
"Please note: I have a couple of these to sell so I only took pictures of the one. The knife you receive will be identical to that pictured. The photos are detailed and if you have any questions, I am always available to answer. Please note this product will come in the original box (not pouch) and the close mechanism is flush with the back of the blade unlike true retail spyderco knives that have the boye dent."

Get Spyderco to confirm it's a fake before doing much else. It might or might not be. It could be a second. I've not seen a lockback police faked but thatmeans nothing. If you get your money back and don't have to pay for the return just what are you out? Good luck. Really good luck getting the police to take the case when you didn't even lose money.

They do more than most know. They can't be everywhere though.

good luck

Joe, there are fake Police 3's on AliExpress, so they do exist. There's also no "seconds notch" on the blade in the OP's photos. Those things, coupled with the fact the seller says she has purchased Civilians, another model for which fakes have been rampant on eBay lately, from the same auction house makes me think it is almost certainly a fake. Spyderco would probably need to have the knife and packaging "in hand" to determine that for sure. Unless the OP' cave is in or near Golden, doing that within eBay's window for returning it for a refund would almost certainly be impossible.

That part makes it seem like the seller knows it is a fake.

"Freaking out" hardly. Just trying to get as much info as possible and do what is required so that I don't lose my cash, get negative feedback, and/or get EBay to drop my acct.

And, it's a good fake? So I should just keep it? F no. You can buy/own all the fake gear you want and be proud of it, not me. Supporting fakes is not my thing. Supporting liars isn't either.

Of course the cops won't do anything. However getting paperwork is required to follow EBay procedure and keep myself in good standing. What? Keep my refund? Don't hand over the knife to local police? That would mean I'm the one in the grey...

To those that offered help, thanks.

To those that can't read, don't comment.

Today the knife goes to the police, hah. I will leave negative feedback soon. eBay will contact about the matter again, I'll have my ducks all in a row.

I will probably PM sal and if he want to look on EBay he can. I live in the PNW, I'm not going to CO.

Thanks again guys

She's still selling her fakes. There's 1 Police and a handful of Civilians left. Her ads are total plagiarism. She claims to have sold 200 knives? That's about 20 grand. I'd call that felonious sales, not petty. Ebay has to come on board to make that connection for the OP. The counterfeit sales operations that are plaguing the industry suck and it's getting worse.

Claims to have sold more than 200, yet that specific account has only 112 feedbacks... sounds like someone who has more than 1 account or has had one closed. Either way, they suck.

My only concern today is how do I PROVE it's a fake?

Are all Police 3s, this serial model, engraved? Does Spyderco etch then engrave? Could a knife get an etching and skip engraving due to seconds?

Wish a real Spyderco employee would step in and at least throw down some facts to help this through. I think it would be in their best interest.. though I suppose golfing or skiing is more important :)

Nice, just in:

"Umm you got a refund. You got a mailing label. You WILL be sending me back my product. I have been 100% cooperative with you. This is you, lying about my product in order to get your money back and keep it. This is thievery! I expect my product back or I WILL be contacting eBay and my local authorities to report a theft.

That is so lovely. Get ripped off then have to deal with blow back..

Last year I checked ebay on a break from work and saw a used Spyderco Civilian auction that was in the last few minutes of the auction. The price was around 80 bucks and I had been wanting to check one out so on impulse I bid on it and won. Soon after I got an email from the guy saying:

"HELLO , MY USED KNIFE WAS IN A LITTLE POOR COND. SO I HAVE FACTORY #2 IT'S NEW JUST LITE ON THE LASER PRINT, YOU'LL SEE IF YOUR NOT HAPPY WITH IT SEND IT BACK. THANK YOU, RIGO"

then:

"HELLO PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU WILL SEND PAYMENT PLEASE..?"

I was immediately suspicious. I have since become much more knowledgeable about knockoff knives, but at that time I was just vaguely aware they existed. I sent him this email:

"I'll probably send it today, though I'm not sure this is a real Spyderco. Looking at your seller history you sell a lot of Spyderco clones. Is this one a clone? It didn't say it was a clone in the ebay listing."

"IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUT PLEASE SEND IT BACK.. IT WAS BOUGHT AT LAST YEARS FACTORY 2nd's SELL.. THERE ONE COMING UP NEXT MONTH IN COLORADO ON NOV. 22 .."

I looked online and saw that Spyderco did have factory sales so I went ahead and sent the money. I got the knife and started checking it out and was still wondering, so I googled around for more info on factory sales. Turns out the seconds they sell have marks on them and my new knife did not have such a mark. I left him bad feedback and left a comment saying he was selling clones without telling anybody.

"WHY WOULD YOU LEAVE THAT FEEDBACK .. YOU GOT THE KNIFE YOU SHOULD OF SENT IT BACK IF YOU THOUGHT THAT.."

"I thought you were being shady and I asked you where you got the knife from and you said Spyderco's factory second sale, so I believed you and sent the check. Later after doing some research I found out that Spyderco marks all their factory seconds and the knife you sent was not marked. I then found out that knives just like the one you sent me can be purchased on Aliexpress.com for less than $25. You deliberately ripped me off and probably lots of other people. That's why I left the feedback I left."

"DO YOU NOW WERE THEY MARK THEM .. ON THE BOX... WITH 2 XX"

"No, they mark the knife itself. http://paulberetta.com/spy101_notched_seconds.htm"

"AND THERE A LOT OF DIFFERENCES IN THOSE KNIVES AND MINE.. THEY HAVE 2 METAL PLATES IN SIDE AND WT IS ALL SO HEAVER .. PUT IT ON A SCALE "

"SEEN BACK KNIFE AND I REFUND YOU THINK THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASIER"

"Send me the refund first, then I'll send the knife. Sorry, I don't trust you at this point. As far as I can tell, you already lied to me once."

"I'M IN THE SAME BOAT WITH YOU... I'M BUYING AN TRYING TO SELL AS I GET THEN TO KEEP MY FAMILY FEED ... I'M A DISABLED MAN I'M TRY TO MY MY LIFE WORK .. AND NOT OFF TAX PAYERS.. BUT IF YOU CAN THINK WHAT YOU WANT.. I BELEAVE WHAT I READ ALL SO.."

"IT'S NOT A PROBLEM BUT I'LL STILL HAVE NEG-FEEDBACK.. MAN YOUR REALLY SHOULD OF EMAIL ME, FIRST.. YOU HAVE TO BE THE REGESTERD BUYER ON A 2ND.. GET ON GOOGLE ... SPYDERCO FACTORY... ON THE SPYDERCO INFO.. IT WILL SAY THAT THERE STEEL IS MADE IN TY LAND AND THERE MAKING KNIVES IN CHINA JAPAN ITALY GERMANY , BUT THERE STEEL IS ASIAN ... READ IT, I'VE BEEN BUYING SPYDERCO FOR 12 OR SO YEARS.. IT'S A SMALL CO. HAS 180 THAT WORK IN THE SMALL PLANT MAKING KNIVES FOR 2000 WALMARTS AND MA PA STORES BASE PRO.. SORRY I'LL SEND REFUND IF YOU CHANGE FEEDBACK FIRST..."

That was the last I heard from him. I never got my money back but I just checked and that ebay user has been deleted. He's probably selling again under another name, but at least it was a little bit of a setback.

That part makes it seem like the seller knows it is a fake.

My advice: stop dithering and go through eBay & PayPal channels, and contact Spyderco directly. The seller wants the knife back because it's EVIDENCE. You don't need to prove it's a fake, or even know what to do. eBay, PayPal and Spyderco will know what to do. The seller's listing reference to "Boye Dent" outs her as knowledgeable, and her reference to "true retail Spydercos" out her as knowing that these are fakes.

If you return it, it will get sold again. Here's how ebay fraud works: sellers knowingly sell fakes. They get good feedback from unknowledgeable buyers because of the low prices. They claim ignorance when the small minority of knowledgeable buyers catch the fakes, in which case they offer prompt refunds. The knowledgeable buyers are glad to get out from under the fake, so they give good or neutral feedback...and the fraud continues, with glowing user feedback from all involved.

To work properly, the system needs good, honest buyers who will go out of their way to do the right thing and call out fraud where it exists.

Pretty much yeah... by accepting a refund and not reporting it you allow the next guy to get shafted.

I accepted a refund and will NOT be returning the knife.

I just got off the phone with Spyderco and they confirmed these are fakes, this Police 3 and the current Military they have up on the site. I sent the link and user info. Spyderco is letting the legal department know and should have this user off line soon- they claim.

The person I spoke with was very helpful and told me several things that confirms this knife and box are fakes.

I'll be getting an email back from Spyderco to use for when I go to the Police dept.

I'm not dithering, I'm crossing my T's and dotting my i's.

At least I'm now confident in going to the Police with some authority in saying it is a fake, not just some Bladeforum guys said so.. :) Though most of you guys are spot on when deciding if it's fake or not.

Also Spyderco does not sell to clearing houses or auction houses.. They only sell seconds at their plant. And typically not more than 20 of one kind are seconds, as it is a random error that causes seconds. AND the notches are consisent with seconds.

And a note, Civilians only have a liner on the lock side... And the boxes are contructed differently, and the foam is different.. and on and on apparently..

What is it that makes people keep buying knives off of ebay when there are perfectly good sellers all over the internet where there is basically no chance of ending up with a fake?

This is maybe the 4th knife I've bought off ebay out of hundreds of knives I've purchased from here or authorized sellers, lay off. :)

He's asking a general question not criticizing you.

Congrats, sloth! I'm glad you reported this fraud, glad you got to keep the fake, and glad you put a bit of financial "hurt" on the fraudulent seller. Win-win-win!

Sellers like f*d are motivated by greed, and succeed because the the greed of others (wanting something for less). Making them take a financial loss on their investment of fake merchandise is a huge financial disincentive to their committing fraud again.

I see she that she still has 1 fake Military and 3 fake Civilian up for sale. I checked the photos and compared them to the authentic versions on the Sypderco site. They are clearly fake. Anyone want a free fake Spyderco and a chance to create a financial disincentive for a fraudulant seller? You have 4 chances on her eBay site.

I've always found it strange that con artists often tell on themselves. In this case, the phrase: "unlike true retail spyderco knives" is a giveaway. She is stating these are not legit. Any retailer going to an "auction" knows they are not getting authentic Spyderco products. Jim Parker used to pass off used knives as new, claiming they were "cleaned to mint". He was also famous for claiming a vintage knife had "as much snap as they day it was born", when in fact he cobbled together "vintage" knives out of parts, and they "day they were born" was the day he cobbled them together. With Parker, it was like he was putting one over on people, AND bragging and putting it into their faces that he was putting one over on them, at the same time.

Buyer beware. Or, with eBay's fraudulent seller policy, seller beware. ;) :D

I've put two half days into this. I've been on the phone with Ebay for over 2hours, went to the police and the court house. I think I've done more than most would have done and I just want these types of people outted.

A general question to you, but it is personal and I feel it was more of a bash. Either way, I'm trying to help Spyderco and others out there to avoid and stop this type of selling. I could have just quit with getting my money back. Most do...

I consider myself a stand up person, honest, and I don't like fraud/liars/thieves. I've dealt with many instances in my life and usually the "bad guy" gets off way too easy while the good guy spends lots of time and effort trying to do good.

I'll pat myself on the back and know this isn't over yet on my end.

Thanks again for the people that contacted me on this issue in PM before I sold it to someone else.. That would have been just another step of annoyance.
