Yes, I want one! Where can I at least see a picture?

Ps- Sal: Thanks so much for exploring other steels and moving the knife industry forward. We are so sick of ATS-34. 440V is awesome. I hope that the Rolling Lock comes with a steel tough enough to justify the lock.

J AlanClay - Spyderco / Rekat Rolling lock Folder. Production engineering was completed although often times, glitches require refinement.

Blade material - CPM-440V - long flat grind (like Military Model).
Blade length (hilt to tip) = 3-9/16" (91 mm).
Full belly upswept skinning style.
Opening hole - 14mm (same as Military Model)
Scales - G10 (.125)
Lock - Rekat rolling lock - liners nested into scales
Lock release is a slide like the SecurLok safety
Clip - Military style - tip down carry

Planning for a prototype at SHOT Show. The last test on the Rekat Rolling Lock with the improved liners was a very impressive. This is a right handed knife, sorry to the southpaws. If all goes well, we'll make a lefty. Don't know price. Don't have delivery date. Sorry about the short blade, Jim. Not designed for intimidation. This model ("in house" name "Martial Folder")
is our test piece for the lock. Assuming all goes well, this will become a limited production piece. Also plan to make an "equal weight / balance" trainer. Let you know more when we have more.

How ready are you guys to use stellite 6K? Just kidding, 440V will do just fine. This one will be a must own along with the military with the secure lock. I assume there will be a difference between the lock used in the military and the rolling lock.

I'm a lefty and as long as the blade can be opened ambidextriously, I don't really mind how it closes.

I can't believe it -- you've actually done everything right! Usually I have at least *something* to complain about. Well, maybe about the blade length -- I'd like to see it in 3.9" blade, or even bigger.

Other than that, this knife sounds very interesting. First and most importantly, replacing the most unreliable locking mechanism in the industry (liner lock), with a prettied-up rolling lock is an incredible idea. But using high-performance steel like 440V, a high-performance grind, a blade with an actual belly, and a big opening hole. This sounds like a winner for sure.

Right now, I feel the Calypso Jr. is Spyderco's best-designed knife. This new one could edge even that out...

Yee haw! Sounds like we have a winner! With the 440V blade, I may just have to set down my Axis in favor of it. Kudos to you Sal, you did this one just like we like 'em here on the forums.
Consequently, my overall favorite Spyderco is my Goddard lightweight, and I only carry it when I run because it is light. My regualr carry is often an Axis, and it looks like you night have just put up the right challenger.
I hope the it is available soon. No offense, but Spyderco has earned a reputation for taking a wee bit of time from concept to production.

I also think this knife sounds about perfect.
I would really like to see it in a mini version
I for one like my folders smaller and compact for everyday carry.
Now for my important question, Sal what knife do you always have with you, your favorite everyday knife?

Thanx for the encouragement. We just designed it to test the Rolling lock. Thought to use a design that would benefit from the strength.
Thaddeus - sorry 'bout that reputation. Probably working on too many things at once...or maybe mentioning the concept too soon? or both?
db - The "Martial folder" was designed to fullfill a very specialized group. Design influence to me was from; James Keating, Bob Taylor, Bram Frank and their cronies. A smaller version probably wouldn't perform the same. It's a "stocky" design with the fingers kind of nesting into the handle. Designed for a medium to large hand. Much bigger and it wouldn't "move" around the hand with the same control. It reverses easily in a variety of ways and ends up where you want it, at least in theory. Saw a photo of the proto that was scanned in a thread called "REKAT" a few days ago. Sorry to ramble. Normally I'm carrying prototypes (testing & refining) + an everyday knife. Tough job...testing prototypes, but somebody has to do it. For every day, I prefer a blade 3-1/2" to 4". This size seems to serve my needs best. you can choke up to the tip if you need to , but it is large enough for food. I sort of rotate between; Military CPM440V (plain or serrated), G10 handle Police Model ATS-55 (flat ground-serrated, full size Calypso VG-10 (flat ground-plain edge). The above mentioned Spyderco/Rekat proto is nice. Thanx for the interest.

I tried for a couple of weeks to get a picture that I had, posted. As Sal mentioned it is in a thread marked REKAT. I would have written REKAT/Spyderco pic but I didn't have the picture posted yet. It is a decent picture and I couldn't understand why no one seemed interested. I tried to go back and change the thread name, but I don't think the software allows that.

Sal,

You mention that the Martial is going to have a "Full belly upswept skinning style" blade -- is this blade going to be similar in shape to the Moran?

One other question: Do you think Spyderco will ever offer the Calypso, Jr in a different steel than 8A?

Thanks much for taking the time to share information with us here!

Clay

Clay - Martial "belly" almost identical to the Moran, slightly more "belly" on the "Martial".
The Calypso jr is in the works in a lightweight (Glass reinforced nylon)tip down model with flat ground VG-10. (Thaddeus, this is how the concepts get out too early. better to stay mum? or put up with the "reputation"). Glad to be participating with such an astute group.

Aaah, the Calipso junior BM, Spyderco's best design where it come to edge geometry, my every day knife, soon to be improved. And, beter jet, a knife in the pipeline with the same well cutting edge geometry but a little bigger and a superior lock! Nice!

Please hurry!!!

One more thing, Sal --

Any chance those VG-10 blades will be put on some micarta handles

Thanks,

Clay - The full size Calypso (4" blade) is flat ground VG-10 with black micarta scales. It's a longer knife but the "cockpit" area is identical. it is just longer at both ends. Rides low in pocket. Nice piece for those that like the longer blades.

Sal - Ever consider naming the new Spyderco/REKAT knife the "SpyderKat"? I think it is a cool name, rolls right off the tongue, and says it all. Even if you don't call it that, I will always refer to mine as that (when I get one)

Ps- No, the tidbits of info are great. Keep it up, we will suffer waiting. We just had some problems getting knives that were supposed to already be out but never showed up, like the Native for example. Have no idea what happened just know that sometimes I see ads for models and they aren't available for many moons thereafter. Whan I hear a concept, I expect it could never even happen, but when I see an ad with a picture, I eagerly go to buy it with no joy.

Will that Calypso Jr. Lightweight be with the flat-ground version of the blade? I hope. Very elegant and useful knife.

Another variant that would be nice (can't have too many variants, can we?
smile.gif
) would be a Native, from the people who do the Black Micarta version of the Calypso, plain edge and flat ground to the spine - no swedge.

James,

From one of Sal's earlier posts:

"The Calypso jr is in the works in a lightweight (Glass reinforced nylon)tip down model with *flat ground* VG-10"

YA!

I also like the idea of the Native with your modifications. That would be very nice indeed.

Sal,

So no Micarta handles on VG-10 Calypso, Jrs?? *sigh* Oh well, still a great knife in 8A. Thanks again for all the great info.

Thaddeus - interesting name, thank you. I'll bring it up to management. If we use it you get one. Sorry about the Native...a long story, and embarrassing from an image point of view. However, Natives are now being regularly produced, back orders caught up and it is a piece we're proud to be able to make in the Golden facility. Another "bone", if you will, When current supply of Gingami is depleted, Native goes 440V. Probably in the fall.
James - Some (you & me) think there can never be too many variations. Some (the bank, marketing dept, acctng dept, sales dept). Many variations are difficult to keep up with. We've sold a few "exclusive" variations to some catalog companies (eg: AG Russell Jess Horn jr.) which makes them available to the ELU but doesn't burden us with inventory and marketing costs. Maybe I'll try to get 2 of those flat ground micarta Natives, what color?

Do they make Micarta in blue?

The coral Rucarta AG Russell uses is pretty cool...
