Spyderco: Replace the plastic part?

Spyderco Manix 2: Replace plastic ball cage?

  • No, I did not replace it with a metal cage.

  • Yes, I replaced it with a metal cage.

  • Yes, I replaced it with a metal cage. Also, the plastic part ruins the knife.

  • I don't own the Manix 2, but I don't care about the plastic part.

  • I don't own the Manix 2, but I would certainly not want that part to be plastic.

Glock perfection, thats why Glock has the largest aftermarket.....
But since you bring up Glock... What is the FIRST thing that many people recommend to swap out on a Glock? the stock PLASTIC sights and get metal. LOL

Sure they do kid. Like that paisley Ti...

Don't try to change me

The plastic part does not concern me, so I see no need to replace it. However, I moved all my Manix 2s because they are too tall in my pocket, ergo is good with only one Grip, and Axis lock is a better choice.

It was an issue. The old ones it is said will eventually break if used enough. Not if but when (exceptions don't count.) Spyderco did change the type of plastic used on later versions to something better that it is supposed to be adequate. I do have more piece of mind with springy titanium being used for that part.
This statement is wildly false, please disregard. “It is said”? Whut?
real men choose metal over plastic
Come take my plastic, and my “man card”, away. I’m waiting.;)

If there were an option that wasn't heavier than the plastic, I'd definitely consider it.

Got me thinking on the actual weight of the cages..
Side note, found this.. https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/manix-2-plastic-cage-broke-alternatives.1537221/
(i won't post the handful of reports of the plastic pin breaking, but lock still worked, that Spyderco 100% replaced with the warranty. Found right here on the forums... with a few broken link pics dating back to at least 2015. And on Spyderco forums where they confirmed they changed the part after initial failures on the clear ones)

Anyway..
you can get the specs from Flytanium's website
Titanium .08 oz
Aluminum .05oz
Brass .16oz
Copper .17oz
Plastic .02oz

Which weight makes me more of a real man? Seems like it wouldn't be that weenie ti one at .08 oz. Real men only choose brass or copper. :D

Spyderco builds an entire knife out of G10, steel, a blade of superior cutting ability, and a fully-functioning ball-bearing spring lock contraption.. and people think the the plastic cage is where they skipped out on some added cost?

No… this ain’t it. That plastic cage is fine. The aftermarket cage serves the same purpose as most other aftermarket parts: People like the look and feel of it better than the stock parts.

I have beaten mine like a red headed step child since 2013. Zero issues. Gave one to my daughter in law a year or so later. She uses it daily at her restaurant. No issues.

The plastic is solid. I’m waaaaay more concerned with axis locks omega springs being a weak point because ive actually had them break and see it happen to others. The manix lock breaking appears to be theoretical because ive never heard if it, and if it did it’s probably so rare to be negligible.

I actually.......fully......agree with you!

I've had 4 Manix2 configurations. I see the plastic cage as a complete non issue. Adding a metal cage would imo do nothing but add potential galling.

The caged ball bearing lock system is one of the best that Spyderco has put out in my opinion. This type of lock system tends to lock the blade up tighter than most others in my experience. I don't see how that one member broke the cage. It's a guide for the spring/capture for the BB, and doesnt really bear any kind of weight.
