Spyderco Sharpmaker Ceramic Rods from Hell. Unlucky? 3 times in a row?

So what was used to put that nice looking edge on that Delica?

The Delica was still quite new in that stage, so the Fine stones from the first set and UF stones I bought with the set were used.
And a little bit stropping ;-).

So, on your guys request, here some pics.

And on the third sharp makers set brown stone.

And yes, i know there is a lot of metal on the stone, that is because I used this stone to take of metal of the back of my damaged tip that was caused by the irregularity, hoping, because the stone was showing wear in no time, that the irregularity would wear away.

And here my Delicas tip now

Well, we all have seen the pics how it looked before..

I don't know how poor I am at sharpening, but you can see for yourself. And yes, it tree topped :-)

To bad it's nothing like that anymore

Are you saying that it treetopped hair before you bought and used the sharpmaker on it?

The edge still looks good to me, even AFTER your mishaps. Unless my eyes aren't fooling me, i'm seeing some edge chipping halfway through the knife?

Btw i use the bottom of a mug and a strop to keep my Delica sharp. Tried it on my Emersons too... Shaving sharp in no time. I'm following this thread since i'm planning to get a Sharpmaker myself.

Where can you buy a new stainless handle delica these days? Besides he bevel on a new knife isn't nearly that nice. Something else must have been used to put a mirror bevel on.

What I've meant, the knife was not abused or anything. Because I really like the look of mirror edges, I refined the bevel on the knife with the fine and ultra fine stones and stropped it to a mirror edge.

Yes the edge is quite good again. I tried resharpen it as good as possible on the flat sides without the pimple of hell of the brown stone. Than the fine stones.

This does not take away I used a lot of metal from the blade to get the knife sharp again.

Almost every Spyderco I bought new tree topped hair. I use the knife until the factory edge gets a little bit dull, than I will resharpen en mirror finish it.

Hi iMarco, do you have any pictures that show how the corders were wearing away as you described? I don't see anything amiss in these pics...other than the bump on the fine stone.

I'm sorry but the way your tip looks now compared to before looks like it was a repair for a tip that was broken. Just my opinion.

It's to bad I don't have a pic of the edge of the tip when it made its way across the ceramic pimple. The edge on the tip, was chipped, and to sharpen the edge so much until the tip was sharp again it would have cost me more metal of the blade, than just take a piece of the tip until I reached sharp edge again. It has been only 2 mm I took of the tip, does not matter much in the overall length of the blade, but it is not nice thing to do to a blade nonetheless.

One of my brown rods has a small bump as well. I just bought it a few weeks ago from a local authorized dealer. I was trying the sharpmaker out on a cheaper knife when I found it. So far, I just marked the spot and try to avoid it but I'm wondering if I can take the bump off with a diamond plate?

Doubtful it was counterfeit . I like the Sharpmaker ok , but I've had two sets of ultra fines and a set of fine rods that each had one side with these bumps. It must be difficult to ensure quality on these since the defect can't be seen.[emoji20]

I don't know about that... A simple swipe of the rods with your fingers should make any surface defects pretty obvious. Of course I have no idea what the QC practices are and how many rods Spyderco manufactures so it could be completely impractical. I have every type of Sharpmaker rods and various ceramic files/bench stones from Spyderco and they're all defect free.

It's been mentioned in other forums. The resurfaced face would cut to whatever grit the diamond plate was, at least until the face wears to the original state. I have no idea how long that would take. I've heard of people "refreshing" their rods with diamond plate so it's been done. Just got to remember they do need to wear in afterwards.

Thanks for the info. I will try it this weekend.

For the record, I tried resurfacing one side of my brown rods on a 600 grit Lansky diamond stone. Afterwards I couldn't tell much difference it that side and the others. It definitely did not make it cut like a 600 grit stone (which was what I was hoping for).

I bet you could clean a bump off with a 1200 grit diamond plate and be left with a perfectly functioning ceramic rod.

I think you could rub the bump off with the other stone...

Not that I think you should have to, but given the circumstances for returning them to Spyderco for inspection, I would try to salvage them, instead...

I already have spoken to the reseller. I will send it back and they will give me a replacement I can choose myself. I am going for DMT guided folder stones.

The Delica, well it's to bad it's not so pretty anymore. I will mirror edge it again, use it and love it like I always did.
