Spyderco Slyz Bowie or Hinderer XM-18 Bowie?

Hinderer, and here's why.
While I think the Slysz is a fantastic knife, aesthetically and functionally, its going to be like all other Slysz bowies out there, unless you void warranty by anodizing or modding in some way. I dont much like the wire clip either.
With Hinderer, you can readily buy almost any part (factory Hinderer parts, mind you) in several different materials and colors. There are so many options with XMs to make them uniquely yours. RHK also doesnt care if you disassemble. Hell, they even manufacture and sell the tool to do it. And theyre just badass, IMHO.

Nice picture, bottom line is I want the Hinderer more, the Slyz is more practical, if there is such a thing as a practical $300 knife.

In that case by all means buy the Hinderer. $300 is far too much to spend on a compromise.

Interesting take.

And one I wholeheartedly disagree with. Both are tremendous users. I personally find more of them (the uses) for the Slysz, it carries so much easier.

A more apt comparison would be the SB vs a Sebenza, although the SB carries slimmer than that one too, just not by as much.

Have you ever looked into Marcin Slysz's full customs? If not, it may shed new light on the Spydie - it is truly a great knife that I personally overlooked for a long time.

Your point about $300 is too much for a compromise us a great point. What do custom Slyz knives cost?

Hinderer, much better fit and finish, it looks awesome

Not in my experience. The Spyderco I owned had better F&F than either of the Hinderers I owned. If you want a Hinderer, the Spyderco won't scratch that itch, but if you want a really good ti framelock, I'd pick the Spyderco any day, every day.

$1K is not an option for me. It's looking like the XM-18 for me.

Not my point at all, I was referring to how expensive a "real" Slysz is. Spyderco collab's are the only one's I truly enjoy, the other's I've tried miss the mark for me. For that reason, I am really glad Sal puts these within my reach.

I compared a SB to a CRK, but a real Slysz is quite a bit beyond a production Reeve.

Not knocking on my Hinderer's, but that is my esperience with that particular Spyderco too, as well as with the Vallotton Sub Hilt and the original Gayle Bradley.

Owned both the Hinderer and the Spyderco. I still own the Slysz Bowie. It's the better knife, somewhat surprisingly.

It compares quite favorably to many knives that are traditionally considered to be higher quality. It's a gem.

Agreed. Slyz is just a better knife.

If I want a high end US made production Ti folder I would rather go with CRK and even Strider over XM-18 any day.

You are right, Taichung Spyderco a can hang with pretty much anyone when it comes to fit and finish, but only a Hinderer is a Hinderer, and I lk,etc that beefy vibe they have.

Why do you have to be so sensible. I handled a Slyz and a XM-18 at GPS today. The Slyz is certainly more pocketable. If it had a flipper, I could easily pick it over and XM-18.

Didn't own Spyderco you speaking about but XM Bowie I have them both, 18 & 24. Probably my favorite blade shape on any XM, badass knife, very well built, maybe better resell value then on Spyderco.... honestly I wouldn't have doubt for a sec. which one to pick - XM

- handle sits in hand perfectly, proven ergonomic design
- Blade shape and grind on Bowie are perfectly done with proven S35VN steel
- overall great build quality, lock up is perfect, action is good on productions on exclusive is perfect
- easy to maintain

Just great looking knife that performs well

I've always looked at the Slysz and wished it was a "little more Bowie" and the handle had a little more traction. No denying it's a sweet blade though.
