Spyderco Southard Flipper

No troll here. Just expressing opinion on the outrageous price tag. You know there are many many different grades of titanium; the lower grade & less expensive being used here. As long as companies' call it "titanium" they feel it gives them license to gouge consumers.

Have you held the southard? It's craftsmanship is second to none I sold mine because I wanted a grail knife Taiwan Spydercos are better than U.S made spydercos , and take into consideration you get premium steel, a titanium framelock, and it's also a collab. knife so I'm sure that brad southard is getting a kickback, also take into consideration the knife has a bearing system in it as well, I believe Sal himself said if the knife was made over her in the good Ole US of A it would cost you $400.00, but short answer is if you don't like it and think it's to expensive don't buy it. Plenty of others will gladly buy the one you skipped out on and enjoy the heck out of it.

Hmmmm. My experience is that "Spyderco" and "gouge" don't belong together in the same sentence. And if you think the price tag is outrageous, don't buy the knife. It's really just as simple as that.

By the way, I read something you might find interesting. In order to produce quality knives in Taiwan, American manufacturers have had to invest in what amounts to brand new infrastructure. As a result, the machinery that goes into making a knife like the Southard is actually newer and in better condition than a lot of the machinery that produces American-made knives. Is it any wonder then that a knife as well-made as the Southard comes out of an assembly plant located in Taiwan?

If you look at the fit and finish of the knife, as well as the quality of the materials, then there should be no question as to the price tag. Some of Spyderco's very best models come from Taiwan.

Doubt spyderco needs to do that.

The price is what it is, personally at $260 I am not feeling it. Thats why I got one used at $210~ instead which is a much more reasonable price for me.

However as with some nice things, the cost isn't from manufacturing, materials, or craftsman ship but more having to do with the low production numbers compared to other production knives. Spyderco isn't a terribly large company, so I think it's working with limited production runs.

I will see if I still got the scribbled numbers of the weight to volume ratio versus sebenza, ZT 561, and the Southard scales. All 3 were identical. We know CRK/ZT use the same Titanium alloy and based on the weight to volume results I would say the Southard is using the same alloy.

You really think Spyderco is using inferior titanium to dupe us all into buying their knives? The founder's motto is about integrity for christ's sake!

The nutn / southard thread was JUST moved to W&C, head over there OP

Not necessarily inferior but low grade. i.e. not much titanium and more filler metal.

And the source of your information concerning the grade of Titanium being used in the Southard is . . . ???

Opinion are welcomed, informed ones are actually taken seriously. I too am curious as to where you got your information, but I have an idea.

Yep Spyderco uses the lowest grade materials possible, so they can screw the customers out of a quality product , that's why they are hated by everyone and no one carries their knives , they are complete and utter garbage. SHEEPDOGZ 4 LIFE!!

I salute Spyderco and Southard for making this fine knife.
Its a worthy effort for the first Spyderco flipper and I personally think its one of the best looking knives in the class.
I've no doubt, that had it been Golden produced, it would have been far more expensive, as others have mentioned.
Far more intelligent knife-buyers than I point to the high quality of the knives from the factory, that produces the Southard.
Im a huge fan of titanium knives and use several ti knives on a regular basis.
Yes, there are different grades of titanium, but that has nothing to do with the ti incoporated into the Spyderco Southard.
Had it been a titanium blade, I would have preferred BETA titanium.
Far to many titanium-blade knives have been and are churned out with other grades of titanium than BETA and that has coloured the opinion of droves of knife-geeks to the degree, that many now erroniously believe, that titanium-blades cant cut and cant be sharpened.
IMO that has no bearing on the use of a different grade of titanium in the Spyderco Southard.
Its a great knife and really only has one big fault!

=

Spyderco should have named it differently.

Its a Spyderco and Southard collab i.e. they should call it the ........ SpyHard!

Well, Spyderco didnt and few things are perfect, but in an imperfect world the Spyderco Southard comes dang close IMO:D

Just a quick cautionary comment. This thread is in the General forum and not Whine & Cheese so craft your posts accordingly.

And by the way what is a "founder's motto?" Many companies employ "mission statements"....bla bla bla. It's all BS. All these companies want is to maximize their bottom line by increasing profit...that's it. So if it means using low grade material and capitalizing off the name "titanium" they will certainly engage in that. Soon enough these products will trickle down to the cheapest manufacturing facilities available.
