Spyderco Southard Worth $200+ ?

I like the dark grey Ti, hell I like it so much I'm going to be selling some of mid-techs because of it and buying another for a spare. It feels great in hand too.

The old saying is always correct. You truly do get what you pay for.

I've been carrying mine for the last two weeks, before receiving it I wasn't sure I'd like it that much because I usually prefer 3.75-4" blades, but it really packs a lot of edge into the size of knife it is, very smooth, excellent F&F, for me, Yes I think it's worth the price.

right? the cutting edge is massive for what seems like a relatively small carry in the pocket.

I think it is a great knife and the equal of customs that would easily run $400-$700. Although I really love the ZT 561, the Southard is a nice understated alternative.

+1 It's worth every penny, and I actually like mine better than the ZT. To me it felt more substantial in hand, maybe not as big, but well built like a custom. If that makes any sense. Well worth the $$

I have read people say it is a heck of a knife, but not worth $200+. What do you all think? They sure look nice and sounds like they have good steel.

Define "worth"? It has a different meaning from one person to another. I own one and think it's one of the bet collaborations to date.

Do they make a version without the flipper?

Nope, and the hole is not a regular Spydie size hole, so hole deployment is just ok. I suppose you could grind it down if you wanted and still have a functional knife. However, the flipper is the best method to open this knife. BTW, Brad does use flippers and round holes on his customs, so it stays in line with his design philosophy.

I am also of the opinion that it is worth the price. It seems to be creating some controversy as of late, I think this is at least the third thread that asks if it is worth it. The general consensus is yes, not sure if anyone has said no that actually owns one. One guy did send his back, but not because of the price not matching what he got iirc. It is funny because I don't recall reading these threads for the $300 LionSpy which is a largish Ti x G10 folder with a "premium" steel. The Southard seems to be a better deal than that although I have never even handled one. The TUFF did get the questions about being worth it so maybe people worry when spending over $200 I suppose.

I've not handled one, yet. It is a sexy looking knife, though. I own the Kershaw Volt 3600, and it's a flipper/frame lock, as well. I've handled the 560/1 from Kershaw and it was too bulky. The Southard looks to fit right between the Volt and 560/1, as far as size or bulk. I would guess this one handles about like the Titanium Framed Military, with it's nice sharp point and slim profile (I have that one, too.)

If you are able to afford the Kershaws, this one isn't a stretch, and it looks to be similar in function. I know this will be on my short list. I just hope they are around long enough for me to save up for one.

Does anyone have a pic of this one next to the Kershaws mentioned? How about next to a Military? I hate trying to relate numbers on a screen to in-hand or in-sight comparisons.

After I handled it I'm selling most my other knives, its that good! How come no one mention it is built like a tank? The liner is thick, lock bar is thick, and the blade is thick....its a tank fo sho :D

Well the 0560 is my favorite edc so I just know I will have to pick one of these up in the future. I also think price will drop a little bit once they have been on the market for a while, not a ton but a little. I expect them to sell in the 225-240 range that some places are offering them at now. Not the 270 price that some places are using and cashing in on all the demand for the new model.

Thanks for the pic, Jill.

It looks like they're fitting quite a bit of blade for the handle size. Nice ratio.

As it is with the brown g-10 the knife doesn't really interest me despite all the rave reviews. Make it all titanium and that would make me more inclined to try it out.

Yes. A thinner, lighter version constructed of 100% Titanium would get my attention too.

I'm still not 100% sold on the hole, but other than that it's a fantastic knife. Well worth $200-$250.

I'd take a mini version too, about Leek size with all Ti.

Just about no knife out there is worth the money it costs. We pay for cool. I think most of the people on this forum could get through their day just fine with a Opinel or SAK. Hell most folks in the world don't even carry a knife on a daily basis.

Worth is subjective to the individual. To me, my $200+ knives are worth every cent, because I enjoy using high quality tools made from high quality products and assembled with care. Just because that's how I feel, doesn't mean that's how anyone else should.

No.....only because I'm not a flipper fan.

Chris D. :D

I bought one even though I'd sort of thought I'd never buy a flipper - but the Southard design and the Spyderco name got my curiosity up. Turns out to have been a really excellent purchase.
