Spyderco taking a jab at Benchmade?

It's a reference only a knifeknut could see. Sal did a good job playing on our knowledge, and doing it in a nice way. It's not a slam, it's cute.

Those Benchmade fanboys who find that kind of reference vexing simply aren't tenacious enough to suck it up and laugh along, too.

:D

How could someone not have said that yet?

+1. Mr. Glesser was having fun, IMHO. The 'inside joke' was between Spyderco, Benchmade and knife knuts. Pretty cool actually.

I am a big fan of both companies.

I have heard the Tenacious was a response to the Vex before.

Not a fan of the Vex, but the Tenacious is a really big deal and one of my favorite Spydercos on the market

I really doubt that Spyderco was trying to tenaciously vex Benchmade or Buck the Case of them using the round hole. That would be childish like someone that ate Gerber foods and would find Zero Tolerance among knife nuts!

:D

I think that Spyderco does foreign made knives a little better than BM...and I prefer BM.

Maybe the axis, arc, ball and others were inspired by the Gerber bolt action. :)

Maybe the Skirmish copied the opening hole -- there was some controversy at the time -- but no one seems to have noticed it copied the Emerson Commander handle.

Some of this technology is public. Who owns the rights to a knife with a blade that folds into the handle? :D

Good points Esav. Imitation does help to bring the industry forward. Think about pocket clips, first introduced by Spyderco (CLIPIT) and thumb studs for instance.

I think it was a great play on words. As far as the holy blade, there's no doubt that it's the superior opening system. I'm not sure I like the hole to be that circular, though. I'd prefer to have it eye-shaped. The thing that bothers me about Sypderco is that so many of their knives are just variations of the same old stuff. Same dinky 3" blades, hole, and this one has a liner lock. Instead of calling it the "Tenacious," they should have called it the "Tedious." How about some variations like greater blade lengths, or even different colors? (I remember the old Ford joke that you can get it in any color as long as it was black. You can get a Spyderco in any blade length as long as it's three inches and shaped like a leaf.)

Oh well, to each his own!

The "eye" hole works better for me. Also the Byrd line has a comfortable hole.

I think it's just one of those "if it ain't broke" kinda things. Spyderco's are just great carry knives. Comfortable in the hand, easy to open, cut well. Most of them are ugly as sin, but they work.

I just ordered a Vex. Wanted to try one of these new fangled alphabet soup blade steels. Liked the Vex a little more than the Tenactious.

I actually find Benchmade's lineup to be the tedious one. Spyderco has constently surprised me with designs that I never thought could work. A round hole? Please. Humped spine? Ugly as sin. A knife with no liners? Give me a break.

Each and every Spyderco I've owned has surprised me in some way for the better. I could list ever single one, but that'd be way off topic here. Suffice it to say, I disagree with the point that they only use 3" leaf shaped blades.

"Holy blade." Unintentional, but oh so perfect! :D

i also find spyderco's lineup far more diverse than benchmades. far more combinations of lock types, blade lengths, scale material, blade material, price point, handle shape, etc.

Nice Nuance in the Spyderco Script.

what bothers me is that we all chastised cold steel's strider references, and applaud or look humorously on spyderco's benchmade reference.

although sal's reference is more tongue in cheek, i find them very similar in nature.

Hmmm. It sounds to me like you have not taken a very good look at spyderco's offering Confederate.

Yes, they put out a lot of leaf style blades. This is considered by many of their fans to be among the best general purpose utility blade shapes. They do offer other blade styles though, much more than most companies seem to do. Can you show me a knife from Kershaw, Benchmade or Buck that resembles the Captain, the Dodo, the Yojimbo or the Kuhkuri?

Kudos to Sal for a nice, subtle jab at a competitor. Part of why I like Spyderco is his professionalism.

thx - cpr

Nope, I can't.

Can't show you any from those companies quite as ugly, either.

Au contraire, mon frere, the Spyderco jab is just that, a friendly poke for a joke. The Cold Steel stab was "in your face" from someone who couldn't stay in his place.

It's all about nuance - a play on names that literates can enjoy. The illiterati can complain, but have no credibility.

Sal will stop by here eventually. :D

Hi Lycosa,

I cannot take credt for the joke, but I must admit it is a humerous play on words. I would suggest that it's not such a big deal as some mght think and I would hope it doesn't prompt another spyderco - benchmade "roundabout".

I think this is a much more friendly situation.
