Spyderco taking a jab at Benchmade?

Since I'm the one that started this post I'm glad that it turned out to be friendly. I like both companies but I don't know if I'll be getting anymore BM's because of their new policies. Unlike the Cold steel topics which get ugly and seem to go on forever (i,e, page 105, 106, 107,...).:)

I like both companies too! Not every model of course but certain ones just grab me! I have benchmades which I chose not because they were BM but because that specific knife was what I was looking for. Same with Spyderco I have a Rescue and the Tenacious as well as previously having owned various other models.

The Tenacious is and inspired knife! What a design! It is my most reached for knife I use it just for fun in the kitchen!

Hey Sal, was wondering if/when you'd pop up and say something about this. I agree it is an amusing play on words, and I think no one has taken it badly here, and we've all kept it quite civil. I was afraid for a bit that it might go that way, but this thread has been EXCELLENT and exactly the kind of discussions I like to read here on BF!!

I haven’t bought a Spyderco for over ten years now. The reason is simple; the last one I bought ten years ago looks like, and basically functions, the same as the ones they sell now. How boring.

Before you take offense Spyderco fans, keep reading.

Benchmade decided to offer thumbholes, which was a good idea, and wonder of wonders, they sold! If Spyderco offered designs using thumstuds they might find a ready market for them.

Benchmade hasn’t offered anything really new or different since what, the Rukus? I actually had started buying their older models because they weren’t offering me anything exciting in their newer lineups. Some of the older models were very nice and unique. I now have every BM model I want, so I’m done with them until they get creative again.

I did just buy a Spyderco again though. I should have a Phoenix coming in the mail any day now. Finally, a different design from Spydie! What a concept. I hope it is a good knife. I’ll let you know.

Since Benchmade is no longer interested in my business, I am looking at other brands that I had previously left alone. Most notably, I also bought an Al Mar mini S.E.R.E., a knife that I always admired but never purchased. I’ll let you know how I like it too.

If Spyderco continues to offer some new and innovative designs, (in folders), including blade shapes, then they have a new customer. If not, I can put them into my ‘Ignore list’ along with the other lackluster companies that I formerly gave my money to.

Brand loyalty only goes so far for me before I start looking around at other company’s offerings. So far this year I have bought 3 knives, all from different manufacturers than my normal go-to guys.

Mule Team, compression lock, ball lock, ZDP offerings, Emerson opener, etc. etc.
And of course what this thread is about- what many think is the single best value in a folding knife- the Chinese-made Tenacious.

Did I mention that I just purchased a new, innovative and different looking Spyderco?
Gee, I guess you missed that part.
,
Speaking of brand loyalists, any Benchmade people want to gang up on me?:D

A tactful, harmless, very funny TIC statement by Spyderco.

Benchmade may use the SpyderHole, but it will always be called the SpyderHole, and we all know who was the first to use it to critical acclaim.

And those who know, carry Spyderco. ;)

As with the spyderhole Benchmade thing. Who cares. Using a hole to open a blade is not nearly as easy as a stud. Yes Benchmade stole their hole and even makes it better then they do. The machining of the spyderhole from spyderco is horrible, it has rough spots on it. I have not found a spyderco that you can flick the blade open using the hole and no wrist action unless you loosen the pivot pin till its sloppy loose, but a Benchmade grip and their axis lock spyderhole combo works like a champ. Keep it up Benchmade. Keep steeling holes.

Yeah, Steeling is cool! Right thing to do!:jerkit:

Every company gets other ideas from other companies and Benchmade does it better. As with spyderco talking crap about the vex like their bird line is better that's just ignorant

What about the W.A.V.E. feature? Spyderco puts that on some of their knives, but they didn't come up with it. If Spyderco didn't do it, someone would have evenutally put a hole in a blade. It's not unethical to use a good idea. Benchmade never claimed it was their own idea in the first place.

Spyderco got permission from Ernest Emerson himself...........

Spyderco does give credit to Emerson for the wave. On the side of the waved spyderco it says Emerson patent # so I wouldn't use that as an example. But things like the lock back and types of locks that they use you could.

the wave is licensed from Emerson. Spyderco has permission and pays royalty fees.

IMO spyderco makes some great knives, but mostly good ones. I just think BM make higher quality for the same price range

Then keep crying about Benchmade stealing your hole. I have never owned a spyderco lock back that didn't have blade play never.

I cannot take credt for the joke, but I must admit it is a humerous play on words. I would suggest that it's not such a big deal as some mght think and I would hope it doesn't prompt another spyderco - benchmade "roundabout".

sal

Perhaps I was wrong?

Guys, back off the "my knife is knifier than your knife" back and forth. It goes nowhere and ends in jumping up & down & screaming. This was a very funny thread -- don't spoil it! Don't. Thank you.
