Spyderco Techno flat detent?

Wow so if you buy a non Golden Spydie, you basically have no warranty...? Besides catastrophic failures/issues obviously. Makes my Slysz Bowie a little less appealing...

UPDATE

Contacted spyderco for a repair and this is what I got...

"There is no way to repair the detent ball in the knife you have as we do not stock all the repair parts for the knives that are not made here in Golden and we do not use the same detent ball on the knives that are made here in Golden."

I have no response...

That is the first bonafide reason I've heard to not do a Taichung spydie, as the one's I've had have been amazing knives.

The only remedies I can think of would be (1.) to polish the "corner" off the flat on the detent ball, or (2.) try to determine the exact positioning of the ball from the backside of the lockbar and drill thru to the detent ball in order to remove it. #2 may ruin the ball in which case it would need to be replaced. If you used a smaller drill bit than the original (blind) hole, you'd have a positive depth stop for your new (or rotated original) ball when you press it in.

I'm honestly considering this. If you don't mind, could you check is your XHP techno has a flattened detent ball? hopefully the screeching will go away with more use...

Sorry for the slow response...I checked my detent ball and it is not flattened. I have opened this knife thousands of times so I wonder if there's a difference between the metal (or treating) used in your detent ball and mine.

That was surprising to hear about the lack of parts at Spyderco Golden to repair the Techno. I wonder if that means they would have replaced it if the warranty was still in tact?

I've had my Techno CTS-XHP version for over two years and carry it almost every day, and have flipped it countless times as others have reported, and the detent ball (under magnification) appears to be perfectly round. In fact, it performs and looks virtually the same as when new in every way...it noiselessly opens by rolling the blade out slowly, or fires out rocket fast depending on technique...It actually actuates better the longer I have it. FWIW I use Benchmade's "Blue Lube" on the pivot and detent ball exclusively.

But IMO...not supporting a Taichung parts inventory (at least small parts) in Golden for repairs, either in or out of warranty, is inexcusable for any Taiwan, Seki City, Italy, etc. produced Spyderco?! Truly surprised to learn of this Spyderco policy!

Like 'Knolan' I've also had my Techno CTS-XHP version for over two years.
I do not have any gritty action or hear a subtle screeching sound.
Everything is quite smooth and my detente ball also appears to be perfectly round.

Absolutely.

OP, reply back and ask specifically for Charlynn (say: please forward). Insist on sending it in so they can check if the knife is within spec. If there is something really wrong with the detent, she has the means to at least try to repair it or she will have to send you a brand new replacement.

These posts saying that only Golden Spydies are covered under warranty is over the top and borderline BS. First off, all Spydercos come in the same box that states the same lifetime limited warranty. I've never had to send in any of my Taiwan models but have sent in a total of two Japanese Spydies both being Caly 3.5's. One was replaced with a brand new knife, the other I received MSRP credit value. While it is true that the warranty department cannot realistically hold all parts for all the overseas model knives both current and disco'd over Spyderco's thirty year history, they should still have several ways to make things right.

That sucks. Spyderco really should be using a ceramic detent ball if the hole is blind like that. My Spyderco Southard did the same thing, but it had a thru hole and I rotated the ball.

Maybe in the future, ceramic detents will be more common but in this case, it would have been impossible for Spyderco to have made it ceramic since Chris Reeve innovated the ceramic detent with the Umnumzaan just five years ago. The Techno came out a year or so after meaning the Techno was already prototyped and up Spydercos production queue when the relatively new feature debuted.

I will be following this thread very closely.

Kershaw and Buck are looking better and better every day........

This probably means they send you a new knife if they find your knife to be faulty and within warranty...

Both my Technos are perfect and see lots of use, so the chance of a second lemon seems very low...

Not probably..... definitely .

There is no just being left to "s*** out of luck" in this situation. If it's defective, the warranty will cover it. Either they try to fix it with what tools and parts they have, replace the knife outright, or give full MSRP credit to be spent in the Spyderco.com store.

Like I said:

Absolutely.

I have no experience with Spyderco's warranty service but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of warranty coverage simply because the knife was disassembled. Spyderco seems like a fair and honest company to me. I can't help thinking that they would only consider the warranty voided if the disassembly contributed to the defect which doesn't appear to be the case here. It would be unfair to refuse warranty coverage on a manufacturing defect based solely on the fact that the knife was disassembled by the owner. I think Spyderco is above that and would treat this situation as fairly as they could.

They have already stated that the detent ball cannot be repaired but I see no mention of them stating that the knife cannot be replaced if they consider it a manufacturing defect. That of course, would be their call but you don't have much to lose. The worse that could happen is that they send the knife back to you in the same condition. The best that could happen is that you get a new knife in perfect working condition.

I suggest you call them back and pursue this further. Ask them to take a look at it and make their own decision. Give them a leap of faith. It's your knife but that's what I would do if it were mine.

I sent my southard in and had to pay a small fee 15-25 bucks or something. Came back minty.

Warranty is no good since he took the knife apart. My Techno is working well so far.

If the knife isn't broken due to him taken apart, he has nothing to worry about the warranty being void. There was a long thread about this last year and Sal and Taz responded. While the language is still there to protect themselves, as long as the knife isn't broken due to it they will service it.

I hate to even take it there, but with only 16 posts and no history on this forum at all, I respectfully call BS on the no warranty claims until I see a clear screen shot of the email. Spyderco may not have the easiest of warranty policies, but they are reasonable

The small flat on the detent ball isn't of any real consequence... polish the tang... get it very smooth, that should minimise, if not entirely fix the issue.
